Microsoft Closing Some Beloved Studios

This isn’t the platform I fell in love with back in 2006. Advertise how you don’t even need an Xbox to play Game Pass, put our exclusives on other platforms, close down some of our best studios. Who thought these were good ideas?

I’m going to keep beating this drum, but I think the acquisition of ABK was actually a way to accelerate this new strategy from Xbox/MS Gaming. To me, thinking none of this would be happening had they not acquired ABK is naive.

Yes, and no. It was supposed to lead to the above, but subscribers stagnated mean it was toast. Gamepass needed growth to take on risks like hifi rush, and ultimiately gamepass didn’t come close to meeting projections. This results into this clusterfuck that’s going on becuase gamepass has failed to meet it’s goal. I wouldn’t be shocked if Microsoft removes day one games and other stuff becasue they’re going to revamp gamepass

I would unsubscribe the very minute they announced that.

Theyve rarely delivered on a regular cadence of great first party content for Gamepass so im not sure what they expect.

That’s it, leaving social media for the rest of the damn week.

I just can’t with this anymore. Gonna focus on playing games and hopefully finishing Kingdom Come Deliverance before the sequel is up on the store.

Xbox Series consoles are lagging behind the One generation & Gamepass isn’t reaching projected numbers.

I mean there’s some cold hard truths & realities which I don’t think people can ignore any longer. Redfall was a disaster & Hi-Fi Rush looks like it has struggled. The Evil Within 2 also didn’t set the world alight either (& that was a shame because I absolutely loved the first game).

I mean nothing is set in stone, i.e. the market decides. So if the market says xyz consoles, services & games aren’t popular, what’s to be done? And I think that’s what we’re seeing play out in real time with MS inching towards a multiplat strategy for its biggest titles. It all makes sense, i.e. no matter how frustrating it is for fans of the brand.

It’s about the money, plain & simple.

The internet collectively really needs to pick a lane and learn to focus outrage better.

If Jeep closes an automotive plant, they don’t stop selling cars or pull commercials off TV. If a PizzaHut location closes down the other locations don’t stop selling pizza in solidarity.

Meandering rage like this is what makes internet outrage so hard to take seriously.

I am as irritated about today’s events as anyone, but good lord, I’m not going to get mad about them releasing another controller. Something they do, seemingly, multiple times per month.

Also as a mainland European nearly nobody here knows what the fuck Gamepass is or that it even exists.

I feel you…I should go play some more Dragon’s Dogma 2 because I don’t like how all this is affecting me.

Just wish that all those people affected by this awful decision will land on their feet and find work soon.

There is a place and time to announce things even when it’s scheduled weeks before the official date. It’s still possible to change it.

Same. Getting back to dragon’s Dogma. Shit happens IRL and I can’t even escape into talking about gaming for all the drama there too.

Best idea honestly.

Same. Good thing we have the Champions League and the NBA playoffs. Much more fun than this.

Try reading manga and watch some animes. There’s plenty of good stuff there if gaming is becoming a chore.

Also the forums of manga magazines are always insightful.

Those elements of the business have nothing to do with each other and they aren’t going to not sell a controller to John Q public because of other events within the business.

Agreed, while I do definitely agree with the criticisms of capitalism and shareholders (the system doesn’t seem to have any safeguards when you reach late-stage capitalism where it’s literally eating itself and all resources in a never-ending quest for growth), the management have to be in the crosshairs for the day-to-day decisions.

It does honestly feel like Xbox doesn’t know what their strategy is at the moment - and maybe if they have now decided, it’s at odds with the previous ones. I thought I had a handle on what it was with the ABK / Bethesda purchases and Game Pass, then I thought I did with the multi-platform / PC stores maybe coming to Xbox / a handheld too.

Now it feels like it’s maybe to be ABK?!

It’s just so weird - they’ve closed a studio in Japan where they previously said they were making a major effort to improve relations, a mobile studio when mobile is a priority, and a good AAA developer that would help with Game Pass content.

I really do hope they’ve got a strategy that’ll work now, one that we’ll all like (i.e.; it still involves some variety on Game Pass) and that they won’t backflip on it as soon as something doesn’t go immediately to plan.

Most of all though, I hope those affected land on their feet - this is a horrible time in gaming, and even worse for those left without jobs given very few seem to be hiring now.

On another note, the June showcase will have to be one of the best shows ever made to get good feelings back into Xbox after this too - as there’s going to be a lot of fans watching pretty upset that some of their favourite developers have been shuttered.

Delaying a controller announcement doesnt hurt anybody. I don’t think people are lining up to purchase this controller.
