Microsoft Closing Some Beloved Studios

?

Before this surge of reviews it still had over 13,000 mostly positive reviews on Steam.

Even ‘Flagship’ single player games like Halo Infinite’s Campaign only has 4000 total reviews.

Everyone is raising their flaming pitchforks at Phil Spencer and Sarah Bond across the web. I understand the anger and disappointment with what’s just transpired.

But where are the pitchforks for Satya Nadella and Amy Hood? I understand it’s a business and because of it they’re the ones mandating this. They’re sending out the orders to appease the share holders and everyone else is left holding the bag.

It’s a worldwide industry problem and everyone is expected to grow and grow but you rarely see outrage against the real big wigs that are sending out the orders.

13,000 reviews isn’t a lot for Steam though, especially for a game that’s been out for over a year and was supposed to be special. For reference, Helldivers 2 has over 600k. I’m not agreeing entirely that that’s why they were shut down, but I’m sure it was a bulletpoint in the negative column.

Because at the end of the day it all comes down to console wars and not actually caring about the people that have been let go.

It’s not really fair to compare HiFi Rush to Helldivers 2, a legit viral multiplayer phenomenon. Most games don’t compare to that level of popularity and most don’t aspire to that, and that’s fine. Even Starfield looks bad compared to it. Starfield, the next big RPG from Bethesda Studios and the biggest new Xbox IP in over a decade with years worth of hype and marketing, has got 97k to compare. It’s not that much more impressive than 13k.

While true, that’s also the point I was trying to make. It’s also hard to gauge it because these games are also available via PC Gamepass, but 13k isn’t a lot either way.

It becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy. You have journalist and influencers telling everyone the sky is falling, which in turn leads to gamers questioning their current/future purchases, which leads to less sales/subs, and eventually job losses, etc.

Reviews are often difficult to gage.

Multiplayer games can easily get 100k+ reviews on Steam with the popular multiplayer titles easily surpassing 300k.

Then if it’s a sequel or spin-off of a popular title it also usually has significantly more too.

The latest Ratchet and Clank on Steam has just shy of 6K. I think for a single player game that was a new IP 13K (now quickly approaching 14K+) is very acceptable.

Oh I agree completely. With the absence of sales data we’re just kind of throwing darts at a wall.

I’m not sure using Ratchet and Clank is the best comparison, since the game isn’t that popular outside of the hardcore Playstation fanbase. Also, just because you think 13k is acceptable doesn’t mean MS does. Again, Steam reviews might have had absolutely nothing to do with their decision anyway, but when there are VR games with 30k+ reviews, I doubt they would be super impressed with 13k.

I thought the game was a huge success by all metrics?

(The influx of new reviews is coming from new players who got the game as part of the current Humble Choice bundle.)

So really, there’s nothing to see here.

It’s a success for a side project. If it was a main project level success they’d still be here

They’re closing some of their more experimental studios to focus more on “high impact” games - isn’t that literally copying Sony, who did the same with London and Japan studios and have poured everything into AAA cinematic games?

Starfield was well reviewed, sold well, and was the most played singleplayer game of the year. But it’s Xbox so the narrative is that it’s bad becasue of trolls.

Yep I might moan about loading screens and the lack of choice in some missions - wishing they’d put more into making the narrative trees and main locations deeper rather than having it be so massive - but it still even beat out Hogwarts Legacy as my most played game last year, with over 100 hours in it.

My criticisms are more wanting it to go from a really good game to one of the best ever - it’s still one I got lost in for a long time, loving my ship I built and a few of the storylines in particular…

It feels like I’m getting crazy ! I was reading on reddit a few days ago that GP was a mistake and that no one on Xbox buy games that are on GP…

So many analysts are getting out of the bushes, making some BS and racking likes and views with people nodding without even being interested in MS or Xbox at all.

It’s not a flop, no need to lie to try to prove your point lol.

I just realised I accidentally had the reviews filtered by English. There’s actually 25k+ reviews (pretty much all positive).

I still think comparing it to other similar single player games it’s good .

Player retention is one thing, but Starfield hasn’t had its update to support mods yet either so we can’t really compare them properly right now.

This is very much comparable to Japan studio who had a large hand in creating some of the best games to come out of playstation since the PS1. Playstation lost their soul when those were shut down. It’s funny because now I hear they’re planning a Gravity Rush film and remastering the first game. Be funny if MS does something similar with Hi Fi down the road.
