Yuck. Wasn’t it just last year that Phil said he would bet on the Arkane Austin team again? And I’m fairly certain he had good things to say about Tango.
I’m guessing this is why Toys for Bob was spun out on its own.
In any case, I feel sorry for the devs. And I don’t want to see Xbox snap up any more independent devs. Leave IOI and Asobo the fuck alone.
This is what immediately went through my mind. Also, outside of a boatload of money, why would any studio agree to be acquired by anyone at this point?
I recall Phil a few years ago saying he had high hopes for Tango. That it was their foothold in Japan.
We have no inside knowledge on any of this and I know Phil said a lot of things but it deed seem genuine to me at the time. And maybe this is even beyond him? I don’t know, fuck man.
Because publishers are (purposely) being elusive about funding independent ventures to force devs into going the route of consolidation – which ultimately benefits them in the end.
There’s been GDC talks about it but no one wants to invest in anything new or creative unless it’s a surefire success. Investors refuse to settle anything for less.
Gonna see a LOT of crowdfunding, early access, and overseas acquisitions a lot more.
ABK with the result of this because it finally made Microsoft people actually look at Xbox numbers and realizing it’s way behind. You don’t just spend $70billion and not investigate. Microsoft people most likely saw Gamepass subs have stagnated and not making much revenue.
Also, the most important thing many slept on was Satya changing bonuses from gamepass sub to gaming revenue. That should’ve told most people that big changes were going to happen, which is why we have this multiplat push and cutting studios that don’t make much “revenue”
Mikami maybe saw what was coming when he left Tango I guess…I too remember those quotes from Spencer, I seriously don’t know what to say anymore other than I am deeply disappointed from Xbox at the moment.
As I keep reminding people, this is hardly limited to Xbox - Embracer and Sony have done their fair share of “running things into the ground”.
Not at all defending the move here, it’s terrible and I have a fair number of friends there that I’ve heard from this morning (it’s obviously not good), but I do think some perspective is needed here. By just blaming Xbox, you’re missing the forest for the trees and in doing so, nothing can change unless the entirety of the companies behind these moves are held to account. We’ve all seen how much collective action can do.
Oh, also, unionize everything and also some proper industry regulation could be used in the industry (as I’ve always said).
They probably paid more than they could for Activision, Microsoft management want returns soon and now Xbox’s division is doing everything possible to reduce short term costs.
