Microsoft Closing Some Beloved Studios

Vast majority of Gamepass users do not use 1 dollar subs lol.

Nah, it’s nowhere near that bad. The Xbox One was both barrels into their own foot.

Xbox needs some positive news, however. Its unimaginable that Xbox One was such a failure but sold better than Xbox Series has.

They can’t alienate their audience forever, however.

I really hope this isn’t true.

Did I say they did, lol?

I literally argued the economic case for it. I also never said one dollar lol.

“been hearing for years that Perfect Dark is in a rough state”. Then he talks about how Crystal Dynamics came on to help it. It did not sound like “new” reporting. He was talking about past things, this wasn’t new information.

July 2024: New catastrophic face plant from MS

They are so fucking bad at this

The Coalition was a new studio working on a AAA game that most likely would have taken forever if it wasn’t for CD. I think the game is fine, besides The Avengers game, which in itself isn’t actually that bad if you take away the GAAS stuff, CD has earned itself a good reputation over the years to be honest and I think the game is fine.

Like you say, old info, and probably was having a hard time until MS reacted accordingly and asked CD to jump in to help on the game.

Are you really comparing the usual “xbox bad” bs rumors to firing hundreds of employees and closing studios? Is a good showcase going to get these fired developers a new job?

No, he’s saying that people will forget about this quickly because they always do.

I worked quietly then I came home and saw Twitter explode Microsoft closing 4 Studios at once! I was surprised at first then I saw Alpha Dogs, Roundhouse, Arkane Austin, Tango Gameworks and finally I found these closures coherent am I the only one?

  • Alpha Dogs not having any knowledge of Mobile and not playing on smartphones, I will not be able to give an opinion on this one.

  • Roundhouse was bought by Bethesda in 2019 and they didn’t release anything it was a Support Studio plus this one doesn’t seem to be closed but the employees are transferred to Zenimax Online.

the 2 bombs are Arkane Austin and Tango Gameworks but people act as if these 2 Studios were fine

Arkane Austin lost part of the Prey team with Raphael Colantonio, they were basically a support studio for Arkane Lyon. Prey was a good critical but not commercial success, Redfall was a critical and commercial failure. Phil Spencer spoke about wanting the Studios under XBOX to be autonomous perhaps Arkane Austin did not have the necessary resources to develop a project from A-Z on their own without Arkane Lyon (who are busy on Blade)

for Tango Gameworks we have a similar case Shinji Mikami the Studio Head who supervises all the Studio’s projects decides to leave Tango Gameworks just after the acquisition of Microsoft I love Tango Gameworks but where would the Studio go without Shinji Mikami what is the vision, is Can the team operate independently? How many members of Tango Gameworks have joined Shinji Mikami at his new Studios there are so many questions to ask.

For me it was 2 Studio that ended up being empty shells without the important people to run them and I really hope that Tim Shafer finds a successor to Double Fine and someone capable of running the Studio to prevent this kind of situation happens again (Tim Schafer is nearing retirement and I don’t want to see Double Fine close)

A business out to make money making business decisions. How absurd. Yes it sucks for those that have lost their jobs. But you know the average joes of the world lose their jobs daily. Don’t see anyone making a fuss about them.

It’s interesting to see the “well this is how the industry is going” and “But Sony…” takes whenever Xbox does something objectively negative in the eyes of the gaming community.

It doesn’t really take away from the impact of these moves. I think a lot of people are underestimating the damage being done to the brand tbh. Being on a site like this it’s easy to “see Green” per say and think it’s all a big nothing burger.

Time will tell ultimately though.

If they release a “banger” people will move on. All the major players in the industry have been closing studios and doing mass layoffs since the video game industry began. People will move on.

It’s best not to worry. Feel compassion for the people affected, but realize that when MS is having investor calls, and the decisions they make after, they are talking to people like this old bastard:

(CEO of Vanguard Group. Vanguard owns 7-8% of Microsoft’s stock)

or Bill Gates best buddy (who is now in his 90s) https://berkshirehathaway.com/

(there is literally a message at the bottom of the page that is essentially “don’t like our web page, fuck you. We aren’t going to pay anyone to do it”)

These are the people who decide the fates of companies. People who are exceedingly rich, but so cheap they won’t even pay for a real website. They don’t know anything about videogames or the people that make them, they only know that they want more money.

Xbox had a great showing last summer and their sales have really skyrocketed since…

That’s not how it works, at all :joy:

No, shit decisions keep sticking around and build up. Their brand will most likely always stay irrelevant until they ditch consoles, so Xbox gaming flows together with regular game consumption and going Xbox isnt a choice the consumer has to take.

Yes, their sales have skyrocketed since. They’ve had their two best quarters ever in the last 3. They may not be “winning” then way you want or think they should, but they’re definitely not failing as a business.

fucking bullshit news

This stats is a bit misleading. Sure, they had their best quarter ever, but that’s because of Activision. You can’t analyze XGS+Bethesda growth if you add a new company to the equation. You’re comparing a revenue split by 2 companies with revenue split by 3 companies. To really see growth we need to compare post Activision quarters with other post Activision quarters.

I’m not saying that Xbox isn’t growing, because this probably isn’t true. Just adding context

Activision is apart of MS/Xbox now so this is just a useless mental exercise that is not reflective of reality.

Again, their brand is COMPLETLY irrelevant. Good quarters doesn’t change this. They will only see consumption where Xbox isn’t a choice, but just a random game you pick up and don’t think about the logo.

Stagnation in game pass and console sales are what we have seen since their great showing last year.
