Microsoft backtracks Xbox Live Gold price hike, also ends membership requirement for Free-to-Play Games [2021-01-22]

Ironically xbox will return to its single player fame and will draw in more single player gamers, as eventually they will be releasing a new game per month available on game pass.

Twitter is entertaining at the moment lol.

What is good to see, is that a lot of pro xbox people are calling this for what it is instead of trying to down play it. I respect that.

Just incase anyone was actually thinking it’s just PS console warriors stirring up on Twitter:

Literally every single Xbox fan I follow is on the same page.

Yeah 100%. GTA online was a nightmare on playstation. Had a few friends who were still on playstation and I had both of course. This experience convinced them all to switch to Xbox

People wouldn’t just subscribe to Game Pass because they don’t have to pay for gold now, MS would just flat out lose money in that situation.

that’s not what I said tho, it’s just a particularly weird arbitrary thing to be mad about celebrating birthdays of all things to be mad about haha, I get what you mean tho.

Indeed, this is universally dissed.

Again why would anyone be for this haha, I don’t know why it’s a shock to anyone that even pro Xbox people thing it’s a bad idea, you would be stupid to think a price increase is a good thing.

Still a real good deal!

The people that were worried that the $1 Game Pass trick was going to bankrupt Xbox can now sleep at night with all this extra cash. /s

Another thing I will point out is:

IT is literally cheaper for MS to maintain gold servers than Nintendo/Playstation/Apple etc.

They own azure, which they can repurpose HW when not in use, compared to Nintendo/Sony who have to play Amazon/MS and others to do the same stuff. Xbox should’ve been one of the first companies to offer F2P not the last.

That being said this is the 1st major misstep under Phil, let’s see how they respond.

Also a major thing is on PC you don’t have to pay for online for Microsoft games, but you have to for console at double the normal the price. I think people being vocal on social media might force their hands.

Also I hope their plan even though its awful would be to increase price, but then remove paywall for multiplayer to go with the launch of Halo

Well that’s because gold has mostly been there to subsidize the console price, it’s probably the reason we got a zen2 cou, 12TF GPU, 16GB GDDR6 and 1TB of NVMe storage for only $500. I think the backlash would be smaller about this than if the Series X was $599 if gold is really subsidizing the console.

Fuck this garbage move. What the… I’m shocked. After all the goodwill they were building and preaching value with series s. Terrible PR at the start of a gen.

PS5 has roughly those specs as well, yet doesn’t charge for fortnite. I get what you mean and how this is a broken record at this point lol, but it shall keep staying a broken record until xbox fixes this instead of worsening it even further.

Yeah that needs to change, it’s the least they can do.

I feel like MS would have data to show that most people pay monthly anyway and won’t see an increase as much as the 6 month codes as in they more immune to increases. I’m like that with Netflix they kept putting the price up but didn’t even notice it for a while lol.

They really do need to get rid of having to pay to play F2P games.

For me personally it doesn’t matter, since I always have gold, I always want to be able to talk to my buddies, but for those that play a lot of F2P games…should be free.

I don’t pay full price for things like Gold & never have, so it doesn’t affect me. Regardless, that’s an absolutely ridiculous move from MS. Double the price? Double?!

Bloody hell. Just when a real air of positivity was spreading. Hopefully they get all the criticism under the sun for this. They deserve it.

Yeah probably, they probably see that hardcore people are buying 6 months etc and casuals 1 month. So, they want to get more from that userbase which they feel probably won’t switch. Still sucks though.
