Microsoft-Activision-Blizzard Discussion Thread (Part 1)

I am sure they do. It is just that Candy Crush is the main one.

Candy Crush will serve them as Minecraft of the group. They don’t have to make a new game; it’s already making big money for years to come.

Lol at the dissenters in that article. I love American political bloviating.

THIS IS TURRIBLE AND SHOULD NEVER BE ALLOWED!

It’s pure drivel. At the end of the day, the political establishment still views corporate America as batting for America on the world stage.

When Microsoft listed the two other companies that make more money in gaming :Sony and Tencent, what do they have in common? They are not American companies and the US government sure as shit don’t want Tencent buying Activision.

Unfortunate as this view point is, it is how these people view things.

Say that Game Pass on PS5 happened, meaning PS5 gets everything Game Pass has and will have, which honestly would just be crazy as hell, yet Xbox obviously won’t get their games. Yet they can continue to make deals with third parties to lock up games for a year or two, keeping it off of Xbox. Assuming Sony wouldn’t quit with those at all, and with Sony…who knows.

That would be beyond ridiculous honestly.

I thought King also consists of several mobile devs that were stuck together for COD Mobile

Thats why Ive kind of done a 180 on the whole thing in the last 24 hours. I dont see the win in giving Sony everything when it weakens your own position. The only way I see it happening is if they weaken Sony’s position enough that they are getting the favorable terms in the transaction. This idea that Grubb is pushing that Sony should get 30% of the subs, and 30% of the Microstransactions, and more money on top of that…seems…nonsensical. Its not that I dont see where he is coming from, it just starts to make minimal sense from a business perspective.

MS is in the position of power here. They have the resources to wait it out for as long as they need to, running to the table to take a shitty deal doesnt seem like good business.

Yep, well said! Their stance must have changed on this by now. Grubb was just giving his opinion, his thoughts on it, right? And with favorable terms do you also mean Sony backing down with third party deals , or not necessarily? I mean no more FF is not that big of a blow to Xbox, but missing out on big western games for a year or more can’t be good.

Yeah, Jeff wasn’t really saying it definitively, I think he is just waxing philosophic about it. I am a fan of Jeff so I don’t want it to come off like I don’t value what he is saying, because I totally understand where he is coming from.

By favorable terms I mean it being a situation where MS benefits more than Sony does. As we move into the future and where gaming is headed, MS is going to need Sony a whole lot less, and in my opinion, the pressure grows for Sony, not MS.

I also am starting to think I agree with Javy that people may have taken Phil’s “Platforms where Game Pass exists” statement a bit too literally. Because it also came with the caveats about being on other platforms requiring the “full xbox experience”.

Grubb is smarter than most video game journo’s but I don’t get his idea about MSFT wanting Sony to get gamepass. The biggest issue gamepass has in the future is when it’s so ubiquitous that devs don’t get the benefit of PS5 players still buying their games. Gamepass actually gets more expensive to add games on as its userbase increases; and part of the initial genius of gamepass is its a way for MSFT to use Playstation as gamepass cost saver.

All that said, MSFT can just keep throwing their bag at any problem really.

I don’t think Sonys getting any COD other than Warzone. I don’t see any exceptions. The idea that Xbox would give 30% of microtransactions to Sony is nonsensical and weakens Xbox’s position and profit or benefit from having them exclusive. Sony holds a very weak hand here. They’d have to cave entirely on gamepass and fees collection on microtransactions and probably lower the percent they take on game sales to even make it a talking point for Xbox to kick around.

Exactly. MS’s plan for Gamepass and Xcloud is to let you purchase your games and play them on any device you want. Sony would never allow MS to open up the entire Xbox store on Playstation.

It’s fun to discuss it (not really, lol), but it’s probably never going to happen.

I think Game Pass on any non-Xbox/PC platform is streaming only so whether you do it on a Switch, PS5, TV, or Phone is just a matter of availability and convenience.

If u don’t have a controller compatible with my TV (or don’t want to buy a streaming stick) it’d be nice to use an existing device (like a PS5) that you have a controller for. If you don’t have a Kishi but have a Switch, it’d be nice to use the Switch.

I think a big part of this is the ‘knock-on’ effect COD exclusivity will have.

For example, lots of gamers just play COD + Madden or FIFA, so if they come over to Xbox they’ll also be buying their sports games and ultimate pack MTXs on xbox, causing an even bigger dent to Sony’s cut from MTX and games.

Add on games like Fortnite and Rocket League to that as well and it’s going to have a major effect in a few years.

I keep thinking of Sony and how hellbent they were on destroying Xbox, totally wiping them off the map.

Well, clearly they weren’t anticipating Xbox acquiring Bethesda, that must have surprised them that they’d go and do that.

And holy shit did they not expect them to acquire a behemoth like AB.

Sony has now realized that the Xbox of today isn’t the Xbox of the days of Xbox One, lol.

Honestly, I think they always knew MS had the buying power to do stuff like this. I think their plan to kill off Xbox was more of an attempt to convince MS to get out of gaming before they did.

Yeah they were expecting them to just go away. And honestly, it was close, even Phil said this.

They had a shot. Those E3 with God of War, Spider-Man, and the dream bingo card like FF7R and Shenmue 3 were really tough for others to swallow. They basically made it a reality and you can only get it on PS. Today, well it’s a whole different story.

Sony will lose a ton of money for this reason. I don’t want to stereotype the crowd, but many COD players mainly just play COD, sports games, and F2P games. The interesting thing about that segment they’ll buy a ton of DLC because they don’t really care for other games. Sony losing that crowd will significantly hurt their revenue because they will no longer get microtransaction cuts from those type of games which attribute for a lot of revenue. I believe ramification of this will make Sony pivot towards including micotransactions in their games and they’ll maybe ask their devs to find ways to make money post launhc.

And I can’t honestly blame them for expecting as much. They know as well as anyone that companies the size of MS will drop projects left and right without a second thought. “oop not working, lets can it.”
