Microsoft-Activision-Blizzard Discussion Thread |OT2| The NeverEnding Acquisition

This part from the bloomberg article on this really hits hard:

“Essentially, there has never been a successful appeal in the UK on an antitrust decision,” said Aaron Glick, a merger arbitrage strategist at TD Cowen. “There does not appear to be a path forward for Microsoft.”

Someone said in the other forum that below £ 70 million in a year is not required, really tough for Sega, unless they buy out in a dry year.

Exactly! It’s done! Microsoft will just have to start investing in publishers and making exclusive deals.

There’s just so many elements to this that make it should an odd decision

Why would any company want to invest in the UK with decisions like this happening?

The fact that those studios and those IP went for only £300m would suggest there wasn’t much of a bidding war, I doubt MS were ever interested

Yeah no one would.

  • #1) Yes. Most would agree Call of Duty and ABK is worth the wait.
  • #2) Capcom and Sega will still be around in a year to buy

We are, with instant silences/bans ready to go!

The CMA removing a SLC from their PF was also unprecedented per many experts, and yet we all know what happened.

I think if redfall and starfield can hit which I am 50/50 on based on the framerate issue, and they can have good output the rest of 2023 and 24 the wait wont be so bad because they will deliever games. If they drop the ball on this and lets say after starfield and forza not much else till the end of 24 its real bad. I feel like this showcase in june now is more important than ever

Have you seen the UK these days? And America? And the EU?

We all have governments & official state branches overflowing with a bunch of little ideologues running around filled with anti-business anxiety & political agendas spawned in the worst radical circles in our once great universities.

I expected Microsoft with all its standing to overcome these issues which affect every other business every day of the year. Yes, the little people have had to deal with this sort of CMA equivalent nonsense for years & years now.

So when MS with its mighty multi trillion dollar market cap can’t get through with logic & justice… Oh boy, the rest of us are really screwed.

This is absolutey getting tossed in the trash by CAT

And they removed that because they obviously felt the logic in it weakened their chances in any appeal by the CAT but clearly feel very confident on the cloud gaming issue.

Lets be clear they’ve taken lots of legal advice on this. They will feel very confident.

I think some of you think that that we represent the majority of gamers, we don’t. Most gamers only tangentially know about the deal and more so about the games coming and GP. This definitely hurts us, but most Xbox gamers are going to have a killer year by the looks of it.

It’s one thing to say this hurts the acquisition strategy and us as enthusiasts, but the Xbox brand as a whole? Nah, especially when it’s not something Xbox did to get here.

There was literally a successful one this month.

You can try and be clever but the USA had 2 consecutive quarters of negative growth. 1st time buyers in much of Western Europe and USA are being priced out of the market .

What next slagging off Japan and saying their economy is toast becasuse they don’t buy XBOX ?

Their reasonings for blocking this are so bad and the opposite of what they are supposed to be doing

They really come across as badly as the FTC where it was clear they had zero intention of ever passing the deal

That doesn’t sound good. MS is in a really shitty position now with this. It’s a big disappointment, especially after yesterday things started to look up actually.

And there’s no telling how much longer this is gonna take, apparently can be months, even a year. I do wonder what MS decides to do if it’s truly still a year and no real big improvements have been made.

That was on launching an investigation - not on a merger decision - was procedural (the CMA did it too late by their own timeline).

Can anyone find any merger that was blocked completely and overturned on irrationality grounds? Any?
