Massive grain of Salt: Sony considering acquiring Warner Bros Streaming and Studios

Huh? I thought those guys only work on wrestling content.

Yep, but the last part of the screenshot tells about how they might know it from WB. If it’s true at all.

It’s not too unrealistic since Sony has tried to buy Fox and others as well.

But the timing is too early and not something that usually leaks.

Sony is ‘considering’.

Behind the scenes I suspect Disney, Amazon, Microsoft, EA, Take-Two, Tencent and more are all considering it.

‘Considering’ the last couple of acquisitions for Sony ended up very messy (and a lawsuit). I would imagine they have a low chance of beating their rivals bids in this case IMO.

I’m also considering it. :grinning_face_with_smiling_eyes:

I wouldn’t be surprised. Sony tried to acquire Paramount recently, and Warner/Discovery will be splitting up next year. I wonder if Marvel will get the Spider-Man movies rights back once Sony gets DC Comics. I don’t know if Microsoft would be interested in the acquisition. It’s a struggling industry, but there’s great potential synergy between Microsoft and Warner.

JD Vance, that you?

Its not gonna happen, for just one singular reason:

Sony already has the rights for spider-man in addition to making some marvel licensed games already. So they would have to give up their current partnership with marvel to get in with dc comics, which i do not want them within a ten ich pole.

I doubt this holds much weight to be frank. Also they have come under scrutiny, both from people who enjoy their products(Movies, devices or games) and investors, for quite a while now in terms of their handling of their own stuff.

There won’t be anything happening this side of mid-2026. WBD won’t even be separated into the two portions until 2026.

As it stands now, WBD has a bit more than $40 BILLION of DEBT. That would be a monumental strain for anyone to take on.

Bungie didn’t burn them enough already? They’re reaching for the hot stove once again?

From my understanding AT&T bought time warner for over 80B. Sold it for around 50B. After the warner discover split the debt will all go to the other company not the warner studio and streaming. I expect the other company with the debt will eventually declare bankruptcy to clear the debt. This makes the new warner studio and streaming more valuable because they will not have the debt. This would be a serious amount of money sony needs to come up with. There was always rumor david z bought warner to flip it eventually.

Sometimes they will saddle one part with all the bad, but I don’t get the vibe from Zaslav, that he wants to entirely make one side so obviously setup for failure. That will entirely kill off “Discovery” as that part goes to the boat anchor side. Then again, maybe Zaslav has no desire to try to make both sides work.

It seems to me that a major portion of the debt will go to Discovery BUT the rest of the debt will go to Warner Bros. Zaslav is probably hoping to pay off Discovery’s debt with the sale of Warner Bros. Whoever buys Warner Bros, it can’t be worse than what Zaslav has done since the merger.

The big thing I’m wondering about is who keeps the IP? Warner without their IP isn’t much of a buy and most companies won’t have an interest.

The IP will be on the streaming side, as thats the side that will actually have the production.

The other side is basically TV and debt

i’m not a fan of david z but he is a movie guy. He may or may not be a buffoon but he’s a movie guy. the split off discovery now is basically junk bonds. the intersting part is turner will be part of the new discovery. they used to own the mgm back library. what happens to that? if david z does sell warner studio and streaming it’s to line his pocket and not to save discovery.

Not hard to believe. Sony is an entertainment company and simply gobbling up more transmedia IP might be a good idea for a business like theirs.

So long as they keep making games for PC then I’m good.
