KoToR Remake Discussion Thread

I love tit for tats. LOL

You think so? I don’t think xbox gives a fck about this kind of deals. They clearly not even trying.

It’s not skipping Xbox. It’ll just release later on Xbox.

By the time it comes out, I’ll be knee deep in Starfield and most likely Avowed.

I just saw that KOTOR is coming to PC as well. Is that at launch or some six odd months later?

By the way, I hope this isn’t a Nioh type situation where Koei Tecmo publishes the game on pc but Sony does the console side publishing hence having some significant power over where it goes on the console side. Nioh shall possibly never be on Xbox. KOTOR doesn’t have to be permanent exclusive for Sony to try FF7Ring the shit out of that game, if it succeeds.

In KOTORs case, Aspyr publishes on PC but Sony is publishing on ps5, which is far more than a standard moneyhat. Sony wouldn’t be weathering the console side performance if they were just paying for it to skip Xbox. They’d directly be affected by how well or not the game performs which isn’t the case in standard moneyhat situations.

If they do indeed have that kinda oversight, they’ll certainly try as much as they can to prolong that exclusivity cuz if they can win the bidding war for this against Microsoft of all, they’re prepared for anything. A lot of us are just assuming the 1 year clause. Really hoping this doesn’t enter timed exclusivity limbo like FF7R has.

I think a bigger issue here is around licenced IPs. Obviously we wouldn’t want MS to chase lots of these and put studios into ‘superhero’ mode like Insomniac. However, we know that certain IPs will drive console sales and gamepass subscriptions due to the appeal of these IPs to the casual audience, so it seems sensible that Sony would strive to gain some of these which get alot of casual investment, and then those casuals also become more aware of Sony’s own IPs.

KOTOR in this case is, at least historically known as an Xbox game and I’m unhappy as many are that we’ll have to wait, and I don’t think it’s good that it’ll become known as a Playstation game know because we all know what timed exclusives do in the mind of casuals.

Some people here may not care for Marvel, I don’t much either but the perception is that Playstation is the Marvel console, and I’m really hoping that it doesn’t repeat for Star Wars. Let’s be honest - Indiana Jones is not either Star Wars or Marvel. Perhaps the money spent on getting Back for Blood and Stalker on game pass day one could help fund a licenced game, I don’t know.

It’s probably not surpring Aspyr are involved in a Playstation exclusivity deal though, they’ve spent the past few years porting SW games to Playstation with trophy support, and all we’ve got on Xbox is the Racer game, and previously their history is MAC ports, so perhaps they don’t really care for the Microsoft ecosystem? Who knows.

At least we’ll get it though, but unfortunately, and as some here may deny, there’s a limit to how much you can penetrate a worldwide fanbase with Halo, Forza and even Elder Scrolls. Licenced IPs are a healthy part of it as well that you can’t ignore.

Gladly this concern at least turned out to be baseless. Great to see it come to pc too. Guess the “PC stay eating” crowd can rest knowing deals like these are gonna get increasingly unlikely to include “skip pc” clauses.

Thought about it since last night & I’m over this already.

The remake will come to Xbox eventually & until then, I already own the original game & it’s sequel, so I’ll just play them if the notion takes me.

I think you’re assuming MS has more power here than they do. They have no publishing rights over KOTOR, so they can’t stop Sony from playing their games. How would they prevent a deal being done here?

For me, it’s a desperate look for Sony, anyway. Spending big to get a remake of an iconic Xbox console exclusive game to launch exclusively on their platform?

It’s just kind of lame to me.

EDIT:

I also think this is going to be a great example of showing up media hypocrisy.

The unified wailing of much of the video games media that titles like Edler Scrolls (that only had two of the five games in the series come to Playsttaion anyway) would not be on PS anymore, or even more ridiculous trying to paint Starfield (a new IP that’s never been on any platform) not coming to PS as some kind of dark injustice to be called out…

… and now Sony makes a title that was never on Playstation and was iconic to Xbox’s history exclusive, and has there been a shred of outcry over this?

Course not.

They could prevent it by offering more monies

Do we know that?

We don’t know that at all. Sony’s money might have been conditional on not starting a bidding war with any other party, a “take it or leave it” ultimatum.

MrMatty, who has real sources, said MS “didn’t want it enough”, aka offered less. We won’t ever know the full truth, I only think they should have not let that happen, but hey, if they answer like they did with Bethesda titles, I’ll live on for another day, even if this one stinks a looot.

Exactly this, Sony since the launch of the PS5 is in panic/desperate mode which is understandable since they are the only platform holder that is gonna lose mindshare/customers because MS and Nintendo are not dead and buried like last gen. They got lucky with the PS4, now things are not that easy.

I don’t see that desperation many are seeing (imo to rationalize these heinous moves and MS inability to counter them), yep Xbox is no longer a joke now, but they still have to crack/cripple PS invincibility image, Zenimax is not enough yet.

I don’t think it’s desperate at all. We’re all going to act like a KOTOR remake hasn’t been something everyone’s been begging for, for the entirety of last gen ?

Just seems like basic business 101 to me, secure the rights to publish an in demand product by the consumers and deliver it.

Yep, imo it’s much more desperate that MS didn’t secure at least for multiplatform release. The other thing which bugs me it’s the total lack of journous saying “it was a Xbox game, why it’s exclusive?”. Frauds. All of them.

on the subject of the remake, when do you think it will release?

don’t ea have the exclusive contract for SW games (except lego) until 2023? so its a 2024 game at earliest?

and I wonder how long the exclusivity is. while sony usually deal with year long deals, the SW ip is huge, and I can see disney not wanting to exclude xbox owners money for a whole year

They showed a 5s cgi without any type of window. 2024 at best, after EA deal will expire.

For exclusivity window I don’t trust Disney and I fear how far Sony can push it.

Expecting KOTOR remake in 2023. And quite possibly 2025 for Xbox, just to be safe lol

As someone who can’t afford both an Xbox and a PS5, i’ve made my peace with missing out on Sony exclusives. I’d love to play Spider-man, Ratchett and Clank, and yes the KOTOR remake as soon as it comes out. But I can’t - and thats ok. Yes the temptation to indulge in FOMO and get annoyed is there but then I remember all the cool things coming to Xbox day1 on game pass and also that I dont even have enough free time to play all the games I want to anyway.

If it does come to Xbox eventually - great, I’ll probably get day 1 (which is unusual for me - again down to budget). If not, i’ll feel a bit sad and then move on with my life.

(although if anyone wants to buy me a PS5 forget what I said!!)
