KoToR Remake Discussion Thread

I’m expecting the remake in early 2023. So part 2 in probably 2027 if they do it. If Aspyr does a good remake then yeah, I would like to see them do the second game too. I don’t think they would be the studio that would make part 3 though. I don’t know who that would be.

Yeah, I just watched a few minutes of KOTOR 2 on Xbox from back then and sorry, but there’s no way im playing that. Looks way outdated. Games need to be up to date for me.

Obsidian would be the one to make KOTOR 3. If not them, InXile. Or only other studio I can think of is Larian.

By the way yall aware InXile could have been the one making Baldurs Gate 3? They tried pitching for that to the D&D organisation or whatever they’re called, but they lost that against Larian.

But obsidian makes the most sense.

Stand-alone sequel, during the game you are remembered by NPCs about what happened years ago during the first game, but no big deal, you can play it without knowing anything.

BG 3 by inXile would have been very interesting. Larian’s going to do a good job, but IMO they aren’t going to be able to resist leaving in too much of the D: OS gameplay elements that I don’t love as much as a lot of other people do.

If I was Obsidian I wouldn’t want to work on any IP again that wasn’t in house. KOTOR 2 was setting up to be an all time great game, IMO, but the publisher shenanigans reduced it to just an unfinished good game. They should be done with any licensed games, let other teams deal with that.

Ehhhhhh, it is technically a sequel, but, it pretty much only pays lip service to events from the original. It plays out more like Obsidian made their own version of KOTOR but had to put a ‘2’ at the end because the first one existed. If that makes sense.

Yeah, it’s more like KOTOR: New Canto Bight

Is this game being funded by Sony or just published? If they are providing finance for it, I can see it being kept off Xbox for years…

Publishing only is another story entirely though.

It is kind of hard to tell. In the press release, there was mention of Sony helping them get the most out of the system (so to speak) but Aspyr are self publishing the PC version. If both versions come out at the same time, then I am not sure if Sony is really funding it at all.

It’s a moneyhat.

Getting caught up on this discussion.

KotOR was one of the defining games for the original Xbox, and helped cement it as the console for WRPGs. I understand where the OP is coming from—the timed exclusivity does sting.

But this is business.

Nuances aside, this is incredibly similar to what we saw with Rise of the Tomb Raider back in 2015. Only this time, Xbox is on the other side.

And it makes complete sense why Sony would do something like this. Just like how Microsoft saw Tomb Raider as a way to (temporarily) fill a gap in their portfolio, Sony likely saw the same with the lack of WRPGs in their line up.

It’s just how it is. Would it have been a nice moment for fans to see Xbox reveal a KotOR remake? Absolutely. But that’s just business sometimes. I’m glad we’re getting a remake in the first place!

And because there is a lot of confusion over the publishing aspect of this, it seems pretty evident that this deal will be similar to how Microsoft “published” Rise of the Tomb Raider and how Sony “published” No Man’s Sky. They’ll help out with some publishing aspects such as distribution, but they aren’t completely funding the game. It seems they don’t even consider it part of their first party line up.

Cant wait to see it. I’m thinking they add content that alludes to The Sith lords as well

Just assume it cost 25% of the games budget so about $15 million. I don’t have insider knowledge but I’m skeptical by nature. Sony is notoriously stingy and games like Yakuza are free exclusives until Sega realized Sony was bribing the games lead. Or the epic lawsuit exposed the cross play shenanigans. The only way for Xbox to stop these deals is for developer stockholders to pay attention to the lost potential income from snubbing Gamepass. Sony’s whole business model is based on the myth they are the market leader. Just my opinions but Sony is shady like that and once Xbox gains equal market share the whole Sony house of cards comes crashing down.

I didn’t know that about yakuza ya that’s really shady if that’s true

I remember the original rumor from last year (or the year before last?) stated that the remake was going to combine pieces of both games together.

Don’t be surprised if they bribed atlus as well. The whole SF5 exclusivity was also bs. Xbox has no presence in Japan and nintendo are seen as a handheld only company.

Sony are just a dirt company straight up. Yes they’re consoles have great gsmes and will continue to do so but I will never have a ps console as my primary. I enjoy playing games on ps consoles but I’ve never bought a multiplat game on a Sony system since the ps2 days.

Its not any different than cuphead

Aspyr is owned by Embracer Group. The Studio MDHR brothers had to remortgage their homes when they realized the full scope they wanted of CUPHEAD.

There’s a major difference imo.

Wel yeah I meant in terms of ms helping them make a gsme but not owning them or the property.

Also I realized something. All this time I’ve been saying ms should have gotten a deal with Disney ages ago but those bastsrds at EA had the SW license for decades.

At least the SW license is free now. Fuck ea and they’re stranglehold on the IP.

Yeah, I don’t think the exclusivity was great for the brand at all. I enjoyed the EA games, but we could’ve gotten way more if it wasn’t for the deal.

Indiana Jones is currently happening, wouldn’t surprised if more Lucasfilm/Disney stuff is on the table for Xbox too.

I enjoyed fallen order. That was it. Problem was the whole MTX garbage fiasco and them trying turn SW into a fucking FIFA game

I truly believe if EA didn’t have exclusive rights we would have had a KOTOR 3 by now.
