EA/Bioware have the same control over the games they want to make and publish as Microsoft, don’t you agree?
Lol. Kotor from aphyr for sony. Kotor 2 from obsidian for MS
Begun the kotor wars have!
They’re competing however we also have to recognize there are different strategies and priorities between them. There are Xbox gaming enthusiasts frustrated that Microsoft hasn’t been fighting back in terms of moneyhats. I believe Microsoft has been prioritizing their spending towards Game Pass and the platform in general because that’s what will really matter in a few years. Their increased budget over the past few years has been based on how bullish the top of their house is about those things and I’m not as confident they get the same “FU money” to win the plastic war hence the lack of moneyhatted timed 3rd party exclusives. There’s really nothing Microsoft can do to stop Sony and these publishers from making those deals other than have a scorched earth moneyhat strategy themselves because there’s no way to know which games they’re making deals for. That would require a ton of money that could be better invested towards 1st party and other Game Pass content.
We’ll have to see how the strategies play out. I think Sony’s effectiveness with them will depend on how long they can make them continue. It’ll get more difficult as the gen progresses. The chip shortage is limiting the advantage they’re having early and eventually they’ll all expire. Sony’s primary spending strategy is to keep things they don’t own away from the competition. Microsoft is spending money to make gaming cheaper, more diverse and more accessible for their base.
Right now I like Microsoft’s strategy better but to each their own.

The difference would also be stark, Obsidian is so much more than Aspyr, moreover Kotor 2 had several parts stripped for time constraints, it’s a technically not finished game.
That’s a personal opinion. I doubt there’s any data to back that assumption up towards the masses. Either way, Microsoft is better off investing in their own IPs and allowing their creatives to determine which projects to work on long term.
Personally speaking I’m not asking for Xbox moneyhats, but for MS trying to avoid these situations at least with storied franchises (I know SE games are lost for Xbox and I can live with it). People with track record say MS knew about Kotor but didn’t want it enough, I mean, imo in these circumstances you should make a leap of faith for your longstanding fans even if it goes outside your MO, moreover a GP multiplatform deal could have been great. Anyway the only way to put a stop to this moneyhats spree from Sony is making other huge splashes to keep them in check and wary of the consequences of their moves.
Oh you mean obsidian should make a remake?
I thought meant a whole new KOTOR game.
Yeah I don’t think either is happening lol.
Lucasfilm isn’t gonna be stupid. The precedent is set. KOTOR 1 remake is on playstation, KOTOR 2 remake won’t be not on it. This isn’t like the Hellblade or TOW situation.
By the way, I have little confidence MS would even approach lucasfilm for such a deal. No reason to have it at the moment.
KOTOR 2 made by Obsidian is a different ballpark than KOTOR made by Aspyr, no (they are the original devs)? Moreover they seem to be not afraid if exclusives. Anyway yeah, MS wouldn’t do it more than Disney, lol.
I don’t think we know the details so there’s no point in us responding with any strong feelings based on theories. It could’ve been as simple as getting out-maneuvered at the table. We also don’t know how ambitious this is or how long it’s exclusive. We don’t know what other deals are out there. Was there something even better they were more focused on? Too many unknowns.
Hey all! OP here - Well this became bigger than I thought it would.
I wrote this wall of cringe yesterday because I was a bit annoyed at this clear moneyhat, timed exclusive for a classic Xbox title that was one of defining reasons of many of our passions for this hobby - and more precisely, why some of us have found our gaming home on Xbox.
I stand by that I think this was a mistake on Xbox’s part to let it slip through their hands (assuming they even were in the room - obviously, they have no ownership on the IP), but this post was an overreaction and fanboyish and I would definitely not write it in that manner in hindsight. It was childish and a mistake - I don’t want to flame the console wars anymore than we typically see in these sorts of discussions.
At this point, I am just excited we have a KotOR remake to experience!
I personally think obsidian remaking their own game is a waste of resources when other studios proficient in remakes are out there to approach. This is while obsidian themselves can focus on original projects. If obsidian made another KOTOR, it has to be the next entry in the franchise and not a remake which is super unlikely imo.
How about a KOTOR 2 remake and then KOTOR 3???
Coincidentally they said in the past they already had the script for KOTOR 3, considering Bioware is a shell of its formes self, they are the only legit pick for a sequel.
Amen! It isn’t as though we’ll be starving for content, and it’ll be of such volume and variety that I’m sure we can all find something to enjoy ![]()
This isn’t to take away from legitimate disappointment. Moneyhats suck, and this was a lame move, but it’s not a full exclusive apparently, and time heals all wounds.
I think it’s great of you to come back and clear up what you posted earlier. It takes strength of character to admit something as simple as the fact that we’re all human, and humans make mistakes - especially in the heat of the moment. I’m glad you were able to take a step back and find something positive about the announcement, and I hope the remake lives up to your expectations ![]()
Always fun when brand fanbases become marketing executives/software engineers/business deal makers overnight whenever something like this happens.
No EA involvement at all? Yeah, this game is coming out 2024 at the earliest.
Appreciate the sentiment. It was an emotionally driven post that, with reflection and the benefit of hindsight, I would approach very differently!
We’ve all been there, and it’s clear you care about this game very much. I definitely appreciate your passion, and your ability to structure your arguments despite your frustration.
