I might be able to get a PS5 real cheap, but I need some advice

Via Facebook people can also place ads when they are selling things. So this guy is selling a PS5 Disc edition for 350 euros. Yeah I know, red flags immediately, right? But I decided to ask him why he’s asking such a low price, he said his uncle works at Sony and basically gets them for free. Red flag number two, right? Absolutely.

But he did show me pictures of the sealed box, including the barcode and everything. He claims the receit comes with it, with warranty at Sony. He’s willing to ship it, or that I go to his place and get it myself. But he lives about 7 hours from me, so it’s not exactly around the corner. He’s also willing to have me pay him half, he sends the PS5 and then I pay him the rest. But who’s to say he will send that PS5 at all, you know? Obviously I’m not doing that, never. I also asked him if I can try the PS5 out at his place, but he said the box is sealed, so if we open it I must promise I will buy it.

My question I guess is, can I contact Sony, give them that barcode, so they can check if it’s not a fake box, and is actually the real deal? I guess I would be willing to travel to his place, take my dog with me too because the area he lives in is real nice and me and my dog just make a nice trip of it.

Total amount of money of the trip with train and boat would mean that the PS5 would cost me 400 euros. Not bad at all.

Would you do it? Make the trip? It sounds too good to be true, this price, I realize that, but what if he’s actually legit? I’m not buying without having seen it, too much of a risk, but I can go there. And would contacting Sony with that barcode do anything?

Thanks.

I wouldn’t trust it, and honestly… 14 hours of travel is probably more than I’d be willing to do to save 100 euros. But that’s just me.

too many red flags for my liking

Yeah, true. Maybe years ago I might have been that naive/gullible but that’s not the case anymore.

That’s true, it can sometimes be had for 500 new and right now I’m not even in a hurry. My first plan was to wait until sometime summer, maybe get a nice deal.

You know, you’re completely right about that. 350 euros would have been a crazy deal, but that’s not a risk worth taking. I just checked his page more and I see zero user reviews, and he also is selling other products such as IPhone and e-bikes for very low prices. I asked him why the bike is so cheap, he knows someone that can get them for cheap. That was his answer. He does have photos of all these products and those seem legit, but anyone can do that.

SCAM

I humbly advise you to abandon this idea, you yourself have raised all the suspicious points, never move from point A to unfamiliar point B with money on you, if you are ready to spend 400 euros then soon you will be able to buy a console in store with bill and warranty, your dog also deserves a ride devoid of any risks =)

Yeah this is a scam, or maybe stolen goods if he has more stuff?

Avoid.

Also, sidenote… Where are you guys getting €500 PS5’s? I might have to get into scalping then haha.

Oh it’s not so much as being scared to get in a weird location, because if I don’t trust something I turn around immediately. Not that you can ever know for sure if it can be trusted. But I was more thinking of the risk of arriving at the location and there is nobody, it was all BS and the trip was made for nothing.

I had lots of doubts already and 99 9% of the time if I have doubts I don’t do it.

For me it’s mostly been on Ebay like sites. But I also still see folks with prices like 900 euros, busters.

My uncle works at Sony in the future and I have a truckload of PS6s I can sell you for $200 each. PM me for Venmo details.

You’ve won the lottery jackpot and we can help you collect but they request a $100 payment first in order to help unblock the held funds and sort out any paperwork…

I don’t buy used anything.

Scam, or invitation to get robbed. Note: When doing any sort of in person transaction meet in a secure area like a police station, bank, etc… I meet at places where you pass through metal detectors if possible.

If his uncle “works for Sony” why would he have a receipt? Also Sony isn’t giving away PS5s “for free” to employees, nor would they allow you to re-sell them if they did let employees get them at a discount. At best he is stealing them from somewhere.

Anything that sounds too good to be true probably is, just buy one normally. If you need to make a deal on one it is better to look for alternate deals. For example to buy a TV I signed up for a credit card offering a sign up bonus and used that to essentially get my TV for free.

That’s a interesting point about secure areas. Maybe I trust too easily, but I’ve had strangers come over to my place in the past when I sold my TVs, and they aren’t the cheap kind. I was always on my own and I always accepted cash without any means to check if the money was even real. Yeah, I realize now I could have been way safer in the past.

At least when I sold my TV last year I made sure a acquaintance of mine was with me as well, and the money was done digitally. I live in The Netherlands, nothing as crazy as the “wild west” USA, but that doesn’t mean bad things can’t happen here.

It’s a strange world and never say never I guess. I do tend to still think too well of this world and everything in it when it’s not always so good. I’ll take your advice from here on out.

Me neither, well, not easily. In the past I bought a phone, but I saw the receit and it was all good and a Surface Pro a long time ago. Actually went there by train and all was well.

But overall especially with hardware of any kind, new.

I think its better to be safe, and just buy it from a retailer. I think even if person was to get console for free they would sell something as hot as a PS5 near market value.

Frankly the safest option is to just avoid buying a PS5 at all. :joy:

It’s a scam. 100%

Yeah you are probably much safer in The Netherlands than the USA meeting in person, but it’s just a good rule of thumb for everyone.
