I have never been more bewildered by the hype around a game than this one.

The first one was fine at best and I couldnt even be bothered to finish it.

Not my type of game at all, but it got a huge positive critical reception from people big in the genre and Silksong has just been building hype for eons. It’s like the GTAVI of indie games. I’m hyped purely through osmosis.

I hope it’s a terrific game, but from the outside this is a great example of hype mania.

This is Game Pass? Wow, big get. Because that hype…Jesus.

Maybe some day I will get around to finish the first and then give this a whirl as well.

You don’t remember the blowout? It was announced day one game pass the year Xbox did the “everything in this show is coming within 12 months” show :joy:. Terrible timing. But whatever GP deal there was never went away.

Now that you mention it…yes indeed.

Except I believe there was a disclaimer that Silksong was exempt from that twelve month period.

I don’t remember any disclaimer on any of the games, but it’s also been a while. I just know it was never expected by anyone to take THIS long. And even if there was a disclaimer that was still the worst possible showcase (like the one where they marketing beat was “coming in 12 months”) to reveal Silksong is coming to Xbox and day one GP.

The idea wasn’t bad, but it can be “unreliable.” Not the fault of devs in a sense that they’re lazy, but just can’t predict exactly correctly.

It was a fantastic idea. And I don’t blame the devs. Delays are common in game development. I think the problem was that they advertised it and made that big promise. It set unrealistic expectations and that’s what backfired. I think now is really good. Games are announced closer to when they’re out the gate, but at the same time there’s some further off surprises to look forward to and most importantly there’s no release date promises.

Like I think most of the last showcase was games that are coming out in less than 6 months much less than 12 and a few hadn’t been revealed yet (Keeper and Grounded 2). And most of the new third party reveals are even in that window of either this year or early next year. Ninja Gaiden 4 got revealed the year of. Doom the Dark Ages got revealed June 2024 and launched May 2025. But then there’s still stuff like Clockwork Revolution and Gears E-Day to keep people excited for the future. Xbox has found a fantastic sweet spot with their showcases.

But before they definitely had an issue of the pendulum swinging too far in one direction. First it was them announcing games way too far in advance with CGI trailers not indicative of the game and then it was them promising a hard release date of less than a year for EVERY game in the show (like I don’t remember a disclaimer but regardless the show itself still carried that weight) which I agree isn’t realistic for game development.

No kidding…

Oh man, Silksong is officially the GTA of the indie world. Well at least that official statement is really kind. I had no idea what that game is, but now I’m slightly interested purely for how respectful that statement was.
