Halo |OT2| Forging Ahead

I think the store and prices are the least of their worries. It’s more so that the core experience isn’t engaging or rewarding enough like it’s competitors are.

The gunplay is very tight and crispy but is that enough to keep you engaged in today’s climate ? I don’t think it is.

BR mode will be the reset that they need but they’ll have to nail that.

I don’t think the store is an issue at all, that is just targeted because of the lack of other content. It’s optional cosmetics, who cares.

I simply think 343 is too small for the task. They would need a lot more proper devs and a big live service team to get this thing going properly.

Yeah, that’s true I think most forgot about the store or it did it’s damaged since there are many matches with players wearing store bought items. I think if BR launches strong and does a good job post launch they can salvage this post launch mess

Yeah, I think the understaff part seems to be it because for the game 343 wants post launch it seems they should have way more manpower. I understand Halo is larger than most games since it’s like COD where you got fans of separate modes and whatnot. I think there’s no excuses not to have more manpower to properly maintain a post launch game

343 needs to clean up thier own mess. No one should come to the rescue other than replacing bad managers with better ones. I’ve worked in large organizations where nothing got done because of lack of strong leadership, competing visions, and managerial squabbles. That seems to be the issue here.

They made MCC good over time. I’m sure they can right the ship with infinite, but I’d guess that will take another year or more. Apex Legends is going on 4 years old and doing better than ever. Maybe Halo can mount a comeback once Forge and online co-op gets released so more devs can start rowing in the same direction.

Scrapping couch co-op 10 months after launch still stings and I’ll never agree with that decision. Twelve year old Timmy goes over to a friend’s house, plays couch co-op HI and has a blast. He proceeds to hound his parents into buying him a Series S. It’s not rocket science. There already isn’t feature parity between the One and Series versions. Make local co-op Series exclusive at the least.

Halo Infinite is still a wonderful game and I love to play it. Split Screen, while a loss, is not a massive deal.

Spot on. Im 99% convinced the tirade is a mix of trolls who want Halo to die and Incels because Bonnie Ross is in charge. Once co-op and Forge is in (unlimited maps) they will move the goalposts to be about exotic weapons or some bullshit!

I think forge will do a good job of bringing the more casual players in, especially when people start building the really stupid, silly stuff

But I do feel the game has and will continue to have issues in regards to player retention for certain players

  1. The unlocks and battle passes just seems super boring, maybe this is just my opinion and others feel differently but there’s very little to unlock that I feel looks cool, it needs way more flaming helmet type shit

  2. BRs are all the rage nowadays because they have that 1v100/1 life endorphin rush even if you lose and if you win, it’s huge

Halo really lacks that and for a lot of those casual players that have moved onto BRs, Arena combat just ain’t it anymore, obviously we will see how Halo’s version shapes up

  1. The ranking system just doesn’t seem rewarding

I remember back in the day how crazy some people were about getting to high 40s and 50 in Halo 3 and staying there, it felt like a much bigger deal than whatever they have in place right now

Saw videos on YouTube that people actually got splitscreen working in Halo? How sway? Also, co-op isn’t even out yet. I’m missing something here.

They were able to hack it to enable whatever settings I guess. There’s probably game breaking bugs in it.

Yep. It’s just not rewarding enough. People tried to argue against it and said the gameplay should be enough but those folks are probably older gamers, no offence.

I wonder when they’ll fix the issues with Quick Resume.

Yeah, the progression is boring unfortunately.

And more maps… New ones and remakes.

I think it’s easier to get people back than the devs/people think.

I’m just tired of playing on the same small maps.

When Forge will be available I think we will get more maps within a month (if not week) than during the past year.

Within a week of Forge launching there will be a faithful remake of every Halo map ever.

Considering that there are even projects to remake Halo 1-2-3 into a single campaign, I guess with new Forge there is a potential for a full Halo 1-2-3 remake using Halo Infinite engine.

I have a lot of thoughts formed over the last few days primarily while in the shower so I’ll make it easier to digest with point form :stuck_out_tongue_closed_eyes: it’s a monster so just read the bold parts for TLDR:

  • too much of the response from the Halo community and Halo content creators is overblown and hyperbolic. It would be more reasonable for them to state that they’re going to take a break from the game, than to say that support for the game should be ended and they should make a new one.

  • much of their response is fueled by a lack of understanding of software/game development and gaming history (even Halo history).

  • the You Had Me At Halo podcast represents sanity in a world of madness.

  • much of this has to do with optics than reality. The winter event is essentially a mini-season with paltry rewards for a 4 month season… but will offer an unlimited number of maps and modes. 343 comms could be better in this regard but Halo content creators should be smart enough to see this. A 2 month wait sucks but the payoff is literally infinite. This is like the marshmallow test but we get marshmallows for life.

  • I’m sensing something odd about the responses from creators. They never really cared this much about Seasons and now it seems like a big deal. These hardcore Halo fan content creators traditionally haven’t really cared about Seasons and Season Passes, they just want more to play (maps, weapons, equipment, modes) and proper infrastructure (desync solution, player progression independent of seasons, better social features). Yet they’re currently somewhat focused on the whole Battle Pass thing. Things are finally looking up with half their requests being addressed in several weeks and the team is at the finish line in addressing most of the other issues by early 2023 and we’re asking for 343 to be shut down?

  • Forge is going to make Halo Infinite into an FPS version of Roblox. Which serves up the potential of making Infinite wildly popular despite the low number of players at this point. We can’t call the game dead until we’ve seen how players take to Forge content.

  • when Forge turns HI into FPS Roblox, it could be a goldmine for streamers. With the same few maps, modes, weapons, and not much capacity for social fun I can understand why the game has few viewers on Twitch. This changes that.

  • this potential means little if 343 can’t promote it and I think 343 has a bit of a promotion and communication problem. We’ve seen MS do some really smart promotion around untimed leaks with the Series S, and 343 could have done the same by showing in progress maps made by their official Forge insiders over the past year. 343 needs to be a bit more agile. Showing 30 WIP maps in 1 minute in their video just to show possibilities while stressing that 2 months will help them get it right could help take the sting out of any disappointment. Stressing that this is the one feature that they don’t want to rush while showing possibilities will convince even the most skeptic fan.

  • I was disappointed in a 2 month wait and I’ve moved on…but more importantly I wish 343 the best and hope they knock this out of the park. Every single developer is having issues right now. The real question is whether 343 is on the right track or not as I would argue they did a lot of work on features that were going the wrong direction (progression and Battle Pass, for example) and it genuinely seems like they are on track to delivering the product that we all want as Halo fans. We are seeing a reinvention of 343 as well, which bodes well for the future.

  • 343 can take the sting out of the lack of campaign splitscreen co-op by introducing campaign enemies into Forge. During the technical preview I was able to get splitscreen working for multiplayer on the base Xbox One. I’m not sure if you still can but it would conceivably be a lot easier to get split screen working for multiplayer maps that are a finite size than for an open world. Meaning that you can likely have four players split screen in Forge maps. Throw in enemies and people can make their own campaign style missions or Firefight modes. Because of the flexibility on how to respawn players (Attrition mode style reviving with only 1 life per player, or X lives per player) these could be far more compelling than the campaign. And there would be no end to them while the campaign is finite. Plus we get to use our skins.

C’Mon 343 go to all that work for a feature hardly anyone uses or expects these days. I grow tired of the 343 and Halo bashing these days.

While there’s no indication that campaign enemies will be available in forge at launch I think this will be top of their list for features to add after launch - I mean they’re already working on a new PVE game mode where you fight covenant enemies in multiplayer maps so it’s functionality they are actively working on. Once that is available I see nothing stopping people from basically just making campaign levels in forge or even more crazy multiplayer modes. It’s really exciting to think about what people can make with forge, hopefully they do a full deep dive soon.
