Gaming PCs of XboxEra

Hey all,

I’m looking at upgrading an older PC (i7-6700, GTX 1060) build. It’s been a while since I really considered it, what with GPUs costing a fortune and a baby taking up most of my time alongside work.

But now my poor aging rig is starting to fall below the recommended settings for the games I typically like to play. Plus we’re looking to reconfigure the spare bedroom/ office into a second nursery and a large PC tower just doesn’t fit the vibe.

That got me thinking: What kind of PCs do we have in our community here? Ya’ll playing on aging notebooks? High-end rigs you have to insure separately from your other belongings? Somewhere in between?

Let me know down below and hopefully it’ll help me break my indecisiveness around my own potential new build!

I’ve got a ryzen 9 5950x and a 3090 in my current gaming rig and for work/development, I have a 9900k and a 2080ti.

I also have a razer blade 15 which sucks as a laptop, in general, I wouldn’t recommend it at all.

You can get desktops in small form factors now that still can have all the bells and whistles. The only issue with that is the cases tend to be quite costly.

I wouldn’t recommend any windows gaming laptops mainly because of battery life however if you’re okay with plugging it in all the time. Then they’re probs your best bet. Just don’t get a razer!

I have a Asus ROG Strix G15 gaming laptop, with a i7 processor and Geforce RTX 2070.

Mostly play Football Manager and strategy games on it and use it to DJ and produce music with.

Great, now I’m looking at new builds. Goddamit.

Yep. Also you might need a new power supply too because for the 30 or the 40 series the 750 Watt PSU wont cut it.

Still rocking a 1650 gaming laptop. feel no need to upgrade it. I don’t need 4k or even 1440p. For the screen size 1080p 60 is all i need, will even drop to 720p in some more demanding game is fine on a 15 inch screen.

My specs for my gaming/production rig I use for Xbox Era content:

Case: Corsair 4000D Airflow Tempered Glass Mid-Tower ATX

Motherboard: MSI B550-A PRO ProSeries

CPU: AMD 5800X

GPU: Radeon RX 6700 XT

Memory: 64GB of PNY XLR8 Gaming DDR4 DRAM 3200MHz (PC4-25600) CL16 (4 16gb sticks)

Power Supply: Thermaltake Toughpower GF1 850W 80+ Gold

Storage: Intel 670p Series M.2 2280 1TB PCIe NVMe 3.0 along with 2 5tb hard drives and one external 1tb SSD

CPU Cooler: Noctua NHD-15 Air Cooler

Capture Card: Elgato 4k60 Pro MK.2

I use three monitors, two 1080p panels (one vertical) and a 1440p Asus 165 hz IPS panel.

Only real upgrades I would like are the GPU (newer AMD cards most likely) and potentially an OLED display (4k if I have a new GPU, 1440p otherwise)

How do you like that 6700XT? I’m looking at one for my potential mini-ATX build. I don’t want to go Nvidia… partially due to price but also the market is just so screwed up for GPUs and I don’t want to support Nvidia’s role in that.

Where it’s not my primary gaming PC, or way I make a living I’ve even considered going Intel Arc. Just to make a point.

Cost to frames it’s one of the best GPUs available. Can play damn near anything at high+ settings and well over 60fps at 1440p

Yay another Noctua brethren.

I have a Ryzen 4700U notebook for work and the occasional Game Pass title. It even runs Death Stranding (barely).

Upgrading from a Haswell era laptop was a real revelation (i can image how M1 users felt). Intel dropped the ball soooo hard.

I switched to M1 for work and it wiped the floor with my i9 9900k 2080ti rig at compiling my code and running tests!

That’s good to know. I’m still at 1080p, not really planning on changing that but it’s nice to be a bit future proof.

I tend to play Total War games, Satisfactory, would like to throw RTGI Minecraft into the mix. I figure just about any mid-range GPU will set me up for another 5-8 years.

no wonder, 9900k is just a Haswell in ticktock++++++++ costume

  • AMD FX™-8350 Eight-Core Processor, 4000 Mhz, 4 Core(s), 8 Logical Processor(s)
  • NVIDIA GeForce GTX 970
  • Installed Physical Memory (RAM) 16.0 GB

It’s a few years old, I don’t know if that’s good or not, I just need it to play Final Fantasy XIV, which it does. Definitely not a PC guy. :upside_down_face:

I had an 8350 back in the day. Got it along with an R9 270 back in 2013. Lasted until a sketchy apartment electrical fried it. It was a great budget build at the time.
