Games Analysis |OT| Time To Argue About Pixels And Frames!

Looking good indeed! Looking foward to see the gains in real life when they update the gears games. Hope it is available for other devs as well (looking at you Ubisoft).

It seems it was added in Hivebusters for Gears 5, and in the Gears Tactics Xbox release (alongside with an upgrade on Pc)

Next-gen optimized games or games with next-gen SKUs:

Series X > PS5: Watch Dogs Legion, Destiny 2 (maintains a higher resolution, better antialiasing, higher minimum frame rate), Mortal Kombat 11, Fallen Order, DiRT 5 (with the new patch), DMC V (3/4 modes), Black Ops Cold War (2/3 modes), Borderlands 3 (all modes the same except for the 120 FPS one, where the X outperforms, PS5 has better foliage and shadows because of the PS4 Pro legacy, Series X has One S assets because it wasn’t One X enhanced), Fortnite (holds better frame rate), Cyberpunk 2077.

PS5 > Series X: AC Valhalla, Immortals: Fenyx Rising, DMC V (1/4 modes), Black Ops Cold War (1/3 modes).

No noticeable difference: For Honor.

All games have shorter loading times on the Series X except for Borderlands 3.

Let’s see where Control, Hitman 3, Godfall and Yakuza 7 land, but Fallen Order and Mortal Kombat 11’s recently released next-gen patches are already performing better on Series X than on PS5. The situation for the X has improved a ton compared to November already.

Dirt 5 is highly questionable to be in that list.

Watch dogs legion is identical across the two systems.

Also black ops is not better in two modes…in fact it’s gone backwards on all platforms.

Watch Dogs legions is better overall on Series X and Black Ops plays better also.

Havw you seen the latest DiRT 5 patch? It fixed the frame rate and asset problems on Xbox and made RT reflections better on Xbox, too, making the Series X version the best performing overall.

Watch Dogs Legion is the same on both but it has better RT implementation on the X (PS5 has a lesser resolution RT and is missing some elements).

Black Ops Cold War has 3 modes. 2 of those perform better on the X. The recent patches have not changed performance, they have fixed crashes and stuff like that but performance is still the same on every console.

In general, PS5 seems to handle 120 FPS better (although there are exceptions like Fortnite and Borderlands 3) while the X handles RT better (Watch Dogs Legion, DiRT 5, Cold War).

There are no ray tracing reflections on dirt 5 console versions. And for example the 60FPS mode has more detail on PS5 still…and as far as we know runs at higher FPS.

Watch Dogs Legions…was pretty identical according to DF.

The Cold War FPS dips on PS5 were bugs, but I’m not sure if you’ve played it on series X but it’s unplayable with RT turned on.

I do agree that things are improving but I’m afraid strictly looking at facts some of your list was a little optimistic.

Unplayable

It is no use to compare most games (in the sense of declaring a “winner”) because the differences are almost non-existent. It is very different from the start of the PS4/Xbox One era when the games were running in a 1080p/900p resolution on PS and a 900p/720p resolution on Xbox.

This Wiki from IGN can show you what were the true dark times for Xbox:

Things were so rough from launch to around early 2015 with resolution on Xbox One. Eventually 920p became much more common with 720p being the exception.

I mean in MP it is. Single player is ok. In MP you get horrible framerate hitching, freezes and full system crashes. Some people even reported it bricking their consoles. So much so that Activision actively suggested Xbox Series X players turn RT off when playing the game.

I’ve had no problems with it but who knows.

Hmmmm…

Not DF, but like their Gears 5 video, that was on point and absolutely DFish.

I see certain users are quickly running out of things to doompost about.

There were some differences, but they attributed them as bugs.

But on ps5 there were missing Inter reflections (so any object that is reflexive itself would not appear on a reflection), and some objects would momentarily be removed from the reflections every now and then.

Not a big deal either way though

Yea those Series X launch issues cleared up pretty quick and as we thought it was just an issue of dev tools being a little behind and covid causing some dev delays

If these issues have indeed been nipped in the bud, then it was done much faster than I expected. It doesn’t matter to me personally, but I’m glad that the devs were able to come to grips with the GDK, or whatever the issue was. Hopefully, the multi-platform aspect of it will mean more games come to the Xbox!
