Yeah, assuming all of this is true the Pro might surprisingly become my multiplatform console, unfortunately. I can’t deny that. I can wish MS to follow suit but it won’t change anything if they don’t want to.
I don’t yo-yo like that. PlayStation is an exclusives box for me.
Microsoft will eventually release a system more powerful than this one and then games will get patches to be enhanced, and on the cycle continues.
I’ve considered the same thing lol. I did the same thing last gen. Started with the PS4 since it was more powerful than the Xbox One, moved to a Pro, and then moved onto the One X as my primary when that came out. Biggest thing that would hinder me hopping like that is my PC with a 3080ti should still be more capable. I’ve actually been playing my PC more and more as these games have become more and more demanding.
Honestly, if the highest visual fidelity is the driving force for anyones game buying decisions, they should be a PC gamer and call it a day. The best PlayStation in the world is never going to match an RTX cards RT performance.
Typically I agree but there is still a large audience that is strictly console gamers. That’s why I always thought the argument that an exclusive doesn’t matter if it’s also on PC seemed silly when there are millions of console only gamers. Even with a relatively capable PC, I still play my consoles more often because I prefer to game on a console. Not to mention some of the additional issues we see on PC, like compilation stutter, that we don’t see on console. If devs were able to eliminate some of these ongoing issues on PC versions, that platform would be a lot more attractive IMO.
Yeah, I get ya.
I could have done this last gen. I already hated how far ahead PS4 was over Xbox One, let alone when Pro came out. And still I stuck with Xbox. It was great when One X came out.
If MS really intends to sit the generation out until 2028 I genuinely hope they retract their words and have a actual mid gen refresh after all, otherwise it’s gonna suck. DF stuff is gonna suck, if you care about that.
Or they DO start the next gen earlier than expected, but I guess this could be tricky too. Back in the PS360 days MS was lucky that cell was horrible for PS3, they won’t make that mistake again. So MS going first could be interesting, but Sony could have a significantly stronger system a few months, to a year later.
I can’t argue with you on that. If you have the pc, I would go for it too. I sure as hell would try out Starfield on it
I mean, I dont disagree, I am part of that audience. I don’t even have a PC anymore (other than my work laptop). Lol. Im just saying that if your biggest concern is Ray Tracing in GTA, well, buy a PC or wait for the console ecosystem you prefer to catch up.
Its not like MS will sit on their hands. I mean, this box comes out, you dump a bunch of money into it, then six months later MS is like “oh yea, here is a 32TF box”.
Ill also provide the caveat that my days of worrying about graphics are behind me, Im old now. Ive spent more time playing Antstream Arcade in the past two weeks than anything else.
DF stuff will only suck for people who’s enjoyment of these games or their content is determined on who “wins”. For the rest of us, they can still prove to be quite interesting. Hell if this Pro console come out, I would be interested in making videos again to look at the differences between each version.
And yeah I agree on Starfield and plan to play on my PC since I trust Bethesda to put out a good PC port. That’s the biggest issue with PC gaming, it’s so hit or miss on port quality these days. It’s why I got Star Wars Jedi Survivor on Xbox, the PC version is still a mess.
Unfortunately that’s not how console development works. Unless MS is already actively working on a Pro like console, we likely won’t see another SKU from them this gen. It’s not something they can just put together in response to what Sony is doing. They would have had to plan a more powerful console years ago. Considering how they said the SX was their Pro console due to how die shrinks were looking in terms of shrink rate and cost, it’ll be interesting to see what they do. If I were to bet on it, I’d say they wait it out until the next gen to produce a more powerful console. Especially when you consider the power narrative hasn’t change the fact that the Series S is the better selling of their two consoles.
I don’t remember insinuating that they can just pull it out of thin air, but he also isn’t just going to arbitrarily confirm a new SKU on a whim in an interview just because someone asked.
Personally Im fine with them waiting. The reality is that almost no one (in the grand scheme of things) is going to buy a PS5 Pro the same way almost no one bought a PS4 pro. Its for die hards and enthusiasts. Most people are just booting up Fortnite for an hour every night and dont care.
Yeah agreed, the current consoles will likely be the better selling of the bunch. I’m mostly curious on the price of this new system. Anything over $700 would be a deal breaker for most people, even if they are an enthusiast IMO.
If I were to guess right now I think Xbox would wait for next gen, and release a single really powerful model, to have that first saying as what happened with the 360.
I think you are pretty spot on. I would say that $699 is my cutoff exactly.
We thought the Dual Sense Edge was crazy expensive and would flop… It was the best sold accessory in the USA recently… Don´t understimate how braindead regular Joes are when they see the Playstation name.
That’s what I’m afraid of yeah. There isn’t really a need for a Pro for them, except only for the enthusiasts that also went out and bought One X. It sucks for us and I would call it a mistake if they truly went into this generation not taking into account a mid gen refresh, but at the same time from their perspective it unfortunately makes sense too. And if this gen really lasts for at least five more years…fuck. I’m not against mid gen refreshes at all, I’ll sell or trade in my current one and get the new one for a nice price. I guess when it comes to these things I’m on the wrong team.
You don’t think they will come with two systems again? I kinds hope they don’t, I won’t deny that. Just one very powerful console and done.
If that tweet is truth, what are we looking at compared to last gen. Is this like PS4 Pro to Xbox One X or significantly bigger gap even?
I don’t know, there are two sides to it. I look at it now and think “the series s was a bit of a mistake”.
Releasing one focused console and a midgen refresh seems to make the most practical sense.
But then I realize that is only really pertinent if you look at it from a myopic console centric perspective. Which isnt at all how they look at it.
They look at it as ecosystem first. All hardware is simply and endpoint to the ecosystem. From that perspective, none of the hardware gamesmanship really matters. And honestly…they make more money than Nintendo, who has sold the most hardware…so who am I to argue.
I don’t think that’s a fair characterization at all. The One X was the better selling console despite it being the most expensive console on the block. All gamers have a perception of value to dollar IMO and if the quality is there and the price is right, I think it’ll do pretty good, even if it is $700. Anything over that though would make most think twice though since that is just so far out there for a console price. Besides a $10 price hike on a controller isn’t the same as a gap larger than $200 for a console.
To be honest, I’m not sure this is the best way to view the situation. As long as the system you got has the games you are looking forward to and enjoy, I don’t see any reason to not be happy still. Allowing your enjoyment to be determined by your team winning on how games perform sounds rather destructive, especially if the ports we play are still good ports.
I think Series S as a product is part of a strategy which responds to a very specific context: starting the gen as the absolute underdog having to regain market share however it may be or even admiting the possibility of Xbox being the second option for many players, manufacturing circumstances, etc.
Only Xbox has the data to show how devs really feel about it and how attractive costumers see it as a product. My suspicion is that the impulse buy territory is not such for many people, and even people who won´t make Xbox is first platform prefer the X model instead. Japan being a case for this. This could change with the release of more exclusives, time will tell and the end of the gen will give us the whole picture.
I will also include in my prediction that, as the new supposed PS5 Slim is going to do, the optical disc drive will be a separate accessory. It just makes too much sense if you look at the ratio of digital purchases on Xbox, despite the focus on backwards compatibility.
Really good points you got there. I totally forgot the exclusives bit.
We probably should not underestimate how important this could be. When Xbox Series was about to launch they didn’t have Bethesda yet, I think? But when next gen rolls around people will have found out that Xbox (Game Pass) is the home of Bethesda and Activision. Probably a lot more people who want a actual console might be more willing to shell out money for a powerful Xbox. Just one console would make sense.
This gen is teaching me, and probably Sony too, that they can perfectly get away with price hikes. They increased the price of the console, games, accessories… How has this affected their business? Not negatively, I can tell you that. They are selling more than ever. They seem to be testing the waters to see how much people is willing to pay for a Playstation product. The limit hasn´t been reached yet for sure, so I could totally see them going beyond 700 for a Pro model.
Wonder if game consoles that release at the same time for the start of a new “generation” could end and if instead of developing a Pro console, Microsoft could just release a new Series X and Series S to replace the current ones as an iteration and break the cycle.
Would be a pain in the butt for devs, band could potentially make it confusing for customers once their system isn’t supported anymore, but could also be a huge shift in the console space.
