  • The best work that TellTale(Sorry AdHoc) has done since TWD season 1
  1. Hell Is Us
  • Great blend of Souls and Adventure gaming. It will not tell you anything, you must figure out how to solve puzzles yourself by reading your journal, talking to people, looking at item descriptions, remembering what npc asked for items you found in the world etc.

There was a lot this year : I’ve been barely able to play a lot of smaller games like Final Fantasy Tactics, Suikoden I & II HD Remaster, Citizen Sleeper 2: Starward Vector, Sorry We’re Closed, Ericksholm: The Stolen Dream, Viewfinder, Bye Sweet Carole, Pacific Drive, Halls of Torment, Demonschool, Silly Polly Beast… So they aren’t in the list but some probably should.

I would have put Silent Hill 2 Remake pretty high in the list, but it’s a re-release I guess. Final Fantasy XVI too. And Kingdom Come Deliverance 2 should have been there somewhere also, but I didn’t play enough of it.

  • 1: The Outer World’s 2 - Everything that made me love The Outer World’s in 2019 but bigger and better

  • 2: Doom the Dark Ages - Although I loved the fast paced flying around the arena of Doom:Eternal, Doom TDA methodical movement through the arenas and dance of blocking and countering made a great impression to round out the new age trilogy of titles

  • 3: Keeper - Simple, elegant, beautiful and incredibly charming Keeper was a breath of fresh air between some of the meatier games I played this year

  • 4: South of Midnight - Vibrant and visually astounding with a compelling story and soundtrack that pulled on my heart strings and made me blink away tears more than once. South of Midnight hit all the right notes with its story and soundtrack, the gameplay was just a vehicle to experience those things… “He was my brother…”

  • 5: the Alters - The Alters immediately caught my attention when it first was announced and didn’t disappoint as I navigated the trials and tribulations of having to survive not only the elements on this desolate planet but the intricacies of taking talking to yourself to a whole different level

  • 6: Call of Duty Black Ops 7 - Fast, fun and at time pretty damn absurd, BO7 did some different things than last years title that I appreciated. Damned if you do damned if you don’t whenever CoD games try something different. This one was fun asf

Non-2025 releases

  • 7: Prey (2017) - A masterpiece, that is all

  • 8: Deathloop - After multiple attempts to make it through the game since it released on Xbox in 2022 something finally clicked on my 3rd attempt and I just had such a fun time uncovering the mysteries of Black Reef and plotting out my course to “End this damn Loop!” Colt was hilarious throughout.

  • 9: Mechwarrior 5: Clans - this game really had me fighting for my life playing solo with the Ai. I had a really fun time with it. Could’ve only been better if I had a group of folks to rock out with in it

  • 10: Mafia III - Lincoln Clay is an ass and not a very redeemable character but who cares when you get to rock around fake 1960s New Orleans with guns in hand and racists to make gone. I stole from ever store that had a no colored sign on it and laughed the whole game through

  • Ongoing Game 1: Halo Infinite - It’s Halo at the best (imo) it’s ever been if you don’t keep complaining about how it launched 5 years ago. Sad to see the support end this year but that doesn’t mean playing it will stop

  • Ongoing Game 2: Helldivers II - As a lover of the Starship Trooper franchise this has probably been the only PlayStation first party game to give me the feeling of FOMO the entire generation. When it finally hit Xbox it was a no question buy. The intense firefights and unintended (or intended) hilarity of death and destruction gets even better when I had the chance to jump in with friends and crank up the difficulty

  • Ongoing Game 3: State of Decay 2 - it’s been about 2 years since support was ended for SoD2 but somehow each year I’ll still get sucked into playing more of it and add another 20-30 hours to it. I’ll undoubtedly do 8t again next year unless SoD3 drops.

I get that people will think it’s recency bias, but I have the time of my life on this game. It’s everything I love in a video game.

Oh, video games. Good old days where I played over 10 new games per year.

  • 1: Stronghold Crusader: Definitive Edition

Not sure this one is eligible (good luck deciding on all of that @Sikamikanico  ), but this was hit me in the nostalgia feelings this year. It has always been a flawed game, but it’s so much fun. Sadly Firefly hasn’t been able to capture the same kind of magic in the past decade.

  • 2: Anno 117: Pax Romana

A buggy multiplayer experience really annoyed me. But overall, from what I’ve played, it’s a decent addition to the Anno collection.

  • 3: Two Point Museum

Two Point games are silly fun. I had more fun with Campus and Hospital, but I hope they keep making games like these at Sega.

  • 4: Supermarket Simulator

This game is just ridiculous. It shouldn’t be a thing. It shouldn’t be addictive. But thanks to @Doncabesa playing it on his stream I tried it on Game Pass. Luckily a game breaking bug occured a couple hours in. Else I’d be destroying even more of my free time with it.

  • Ongoing Game 1: Fortnite

Content is king and Fortnite does it best. Why would kids want to play anything else!?

  • Ongoing Game 2: Manor Lords

It was a one-man job. And it showed. But the developer has hired more people and I hope updates will pop out at a more solid pace from now on. An amazing city builder that should’ve been made by a big studio. It would’ve been an all-timer.

  • Ongoing Game 3: Warcraft III: Reforged

My never-ending game of all time game. Had a LAN-party earlier in the year where we played Warcraft for an entire weekend. Good stuff.

We’ve enabled a site wide vote! So go nuts in there instead. Sorry for the inconvenience, but @KitKat had a better idea on how to do it.
