Publisher SQUARE ENIX today announced that the Xbox Series console version’s open beta for its long-running MMO title ‘Final Fantasy XIV’ is scheduled to begin on the 21st of February at around 12AM PST. This open beta will run for as long as needed and the full version of the game will launch once the beta period is over. Existing Final Fantasy XIV players will not be able to link their current accounts until the game’s full launch.

The open beta test contains the same content, features, and limitations as the Free Trial version, minus the ability to make optional Online Store purchases. This test will not require players to have Xbox Game Pass to be able to play. However, once the game is fully available an Xbox Game Pass plan plus a Final Fantasy XIV subscription (outside of the free trial) will be required to play the game on Xbox Series consoles.

Details on how to participate can be found below or on the official Lodestone article.

1. As FINAL FANTASY XIV is an online multiplayer game you may need to adjust various privacy settings to play on Xbox Series X|S. You may do so by accessing the Xbox settings menu and navigating through the following options: Settings > Account > Privacy & online safety > Xbox privacy > View details & customize >

Communication & multiplayer. The following settings are required:

  • “You can join multiplayer games,” set to Allow
  • “You can join cross-network play,” set to Allow
  • “Others can communicate with voice, text, or invites,” set to Everybody
  • “You can communicate outside of Xbox with voice & text,” set to Everybody

From the previous View details & customize menu, select Game content and confirm:

  • “You can see and upload community creations,” set to Everybody

2. Navigate to the Microsoft Store, search for FINAL FANTASY XIV and visit the product page.

3. From the “…” option menu, select and download the FINAL FANTASY XIV Free Trial onto your Xbox Series X|S.

4. After installation finishes, launch the game and follow the on-screen instructions to begin your adventure.

The open beta test contains the same content, features, and limitations as the Free Trial version, minus the ability to make optional Online Store purchases.

The Free Trial version, including the open beta test, will not require an Xbox Game Pass (Core or Ultimate) plan to play. However, the full Xbox Series X|S version will require an Xbox Game Pass (Core or Ultimate) plan to play.

The trial has the entirety of the full game plus 2 expansions.

Thsts over 100 hours of free content.

Curious if they are gonna sell a large all in one pack with the expansions as I am gonna need it

Don’t care about the game pass core thing as not like cancelling it or not gonna have my game pass stuff lol

Not a fan that the free trial isn’t available for existing customers. I have a level 50 ARR character on PS4. I’ve waited for this port for the better part of ten years… Thought I could be one of those who test the stuff up to Heavensward.

Isnt the whole point to get new customers to test out the trial?? Once the full version is out you can use yiur characters 1

In case you were wondering as I saw no one answered this. However, the way FF14 works is if you buy latest expansion you automatically get the entitlements to the prior expansions.

One thing that will sometimes get new players is that if you pre-order the latest expansion. You don’t actually get access to the prior expansions until latest expansion actually drops.

I’ve had this problem for years now. I played with a sub and actually own both the base game and Heavensward for PS4 and PC, but I refuse to resub because I don’t want to pay to play content most people are getting for free.

Thank you!! So once it comes out I should just be able to buy the base and newest expansion and be set until the next expansion?

Yup, I got back into the game last year and only had to buy Endwalker to get access to the multiple expansions I hadn’t bought before. The only thing to keep in mind right now is that there is a new expansion coming out later this year, so anyone jumping into the game for the first time might want to consider that in their plan given there is already months of content in the free trial to work through.

You get the base game as part of the free trial. So you’re really just adding the expansion onto the trial

Shame that I can’t play without linking to my character.

March 21st.

I’ll be seeing you guys!

Much earlier than I was hoping which was late Spring/early Summer. Oh well. At least you can jump in at any time so I can wait a few months.

I might create account online before installing it on xbox. Because registering on a console is garbage.
