Final Fantasy Community Thread - 16 finales and counting

Final Fantasy is a long running Franchise by Square Enix, most of us know of it and a lot of us enjoy it. With Sundays release of Final Fantasy 16 on Xbox platform and the upcoming Final Fantasy 7 Remake and Final Fantasy tactics. There are over 20 titles on the platform to jump into and start experiencing the Final Fantasy.

I’m mostly making this thread to talk about Final Fantasy games and not crowd the community thread, hopefully I’m not the only one posting here and maybe everyone can share their experience with the game they choose to play.

My favorite game series aside from Mass Effect. Been playing since FF1 on the NES. :old_man:

FF12 is my favorite, followed by FF6 and FF13. I also have thousands of hours in FF14, been playing since the PS3 beta in 2013.

Currently I have been playing Final Fantasy 16, and have made reunited with a character we meet in the tutorial. Clive is finally moving on from his big dumb moment and still being a little dumb, but at least he is pursuing the person with answers to his questions a long side: best dog Torgal and childhood friend Jill.

My current favorites are FF7, FF6 and FF13. With 13 being the outlier because it’s different enough that I don’t really know how to play the game but, I like a lot of what is being done I just need to actually finish the game. But by this time, I likely will have to restart and try to get familiar with it again.

I’m currently planning on playing through every Final Fantasy I can, starting with 16 but I’m not sure if I will play Stranger of Paradise as I didn’t enjoy the demo.

I absolutely love XIII, I 100%'ed it back on Xbox 360 (very long endgame grind!) and have beaten the story another two or three times over. Someday I might complete the achievements in the Windows version too.

I’d like to 100% the achievements on some more games in the series - so far I’ve done 1 (pixel remaster), XII, XIII, XIII-2, Lightning Returns, Type-0, and XV (base game only). XVI looks like it might be doable, and I plan to polish off VII and a couple more of the pixel remasters at some point.

I’m unfortunately not the get all achievements type, there are few games that I try that in and generally is because I really liked everything I was doing enough to keep trying.

But I will try to get as many achievements as I can for every game as I go, including side stuff that deviates from the main story.

It felt like this when XVI and VII Remake were announced for Xbox.

No kidding, I still have a lot of games to catch up to on Xbox and I’m going to be doing a Final Fantasy run for a bit.

It’s been a long time since I’ve played a FF game. How is FF16? I prefer the FF games that was more urban/city based games. This game looks like it takes place outside in wilderness.

I started with FF1 on the NES when I was like 5 years old and I was a big fan of the franchise up till FF 10 which is where they started to lose me. FF12 was my jumping off point as it was such a big departure from the traditional game mechanics of the series and with Sakaguchi gone, it felt like the franchise was just different and I didn’t like it.

It’s a return to the crystals saga, so this game is more medieval fantasy like a lot of the older games. There are a lot of outside combat scenes, but there’s also so far, a good amount of combat in forts as either were defending or attacking.

The combat itself is pretty fun, with the use of a timing system to do most of the combos and being able to switch between elemental attacks that each have their own cooldown special attack. The only resource to manage is health as magic is unlimited, the only thing about the combat that I’m not enjoying is the Eikon battles so far.

I’m also pretty early in though.

Edit: to post a screen shot.

Edit: I have finally played enough FF16 to have caught up to some Xbox players as my last story based achivement was rare.

Great thread, and as someone who considers XIII in his personal top five for the entire series (including non-mainline titles), it’s lovely to see so much love for the game all these years later (was a social faux pas to admit you liked it when it was out, but I loved it from the get go).

I don’t quite remember what my first Final Fantasy was. It’s either XIII for the 360 or X for the Vita. I wasn’t particularly impressed with XIII, though that game did have gorgeous visuals. I really liked X though, and I’m looking forward to replaying it one of these days.

Furthermore, I bought the limited edition steelbox for FF XIV on the cheap a month after that game released due to it kinda bombing, and whilst I liked the first few hours or so I quickly got bored with the empty open world. And that kind of killed the franchise for me for a couple of years.

In the last 5 years I’ve been getting into the FF games again by playing VII and VIII. VII has been my favourite between those two, and it’s blessedly short for a JRPG. VIII was also fun though the plot and gameplay systems drag it down a little. I own multiple copies of Final Fantasy IX, but I’ve yet to really play it for more than an hour.

I also have the older FF games, I dropped III and IV due to lack of anything that I’ve come to like in Final Fantasy (Plot is barely existant, and the gameplay didn’t carry the experience nor do they have the charm and quick combat of an early DQ title).

FF V and VI are still on my to play list. I’m still deciding whether to play VI on my Xbox or on the Mini SNES that I’ve barely used (I ought to sell that thing).

This goes with my last post about catching up, Clive has finally accepted the truth.

While his reasoning for lying to himself isn’t particular compelling to me, it can definitely resonate with others. The combat continues to be pretty damn good, I just unlocked limit breaks and while I wasn’t expecting it. It makes sense that would be the form they would take, to go with the theme of the game.

Edit: Sorry about that, I was planning on replying about FF13 but I changed my mind and the post still replied.

The side quest for FF16 can get pretty heavy, especially when they deal with how magic users are treated.

Petting Torgal helps.

I remember the first time I saw a Final Fantasy game. I must have been around 13 or 14 and visiting friends of my parents. They had a son a few years older and I was shipped off to watch him play on his Playstation. He was playing a game that looked amazing and was like nothing I’d ever seen before. That game was Final Fantasy 7. He must have been quite far into the game as I’m pretty sure he hit the Knights of the Round summon.

I didn’t have a playstation at the time but we did have a decent PC (My Dad was a Computer Studies teacher in a college) and so I got FF7 on PC when it came out.

Needless to say I’ve had a love for Final Fantasy ever since. Much as that first game I played stuck with me, it was the next one, Final Fantasy 8 that would become my favourite. It gets a lot of stick but i loved the draw system and magic junctioning and the story of the sorceress was great.

I’ve also a lot of love for 12 - we need more games with the Gambit system.

I’ve only played 6 from the pre playstation games but played all of the non-multiplayer/non-sequel/non-remake ones since (except 16 which i’ve started on XBOX - it hasn’t quite grabbed me yet but i’m not really a DMC fan which it gives me some vibes combat wise). I tried 14 when it launched on xbox but the first hour of fetch quests and the intimidation i felt by the amount of potential content led me to give up pretty quick.

All said - I love Final Fantasy, can’t wait for remake to launch on XBOX so i can play it, and looking forward to this new era and FF17 (probably in about 10 years or so) :frowning:

Definitely far since getting knights of the round require chocobo breeding, to run across the ocean in a land that we can’t land on.

Yeah, I can see 17 being pretty far away because they still need to finish the FF7R trilogy and we don’t know if Square Enix decuded to remake any other Final Fantasies.

As for 16, the main quest so far has been somewhat a personal quest which is why it hasn’t grabbed me yet.

There’s also too much convinience

Summary

That every oarty memember has an Eikon, heck I wouldn’t be surprised if Torgal turns out to be one too. That dog/wolf can fight better than Cid and was with us for the Garuda fight.

I can understand loving FF8, since I rrally enjoyed my time with it and for any teenager starting that game we got the closest protags in age to us back then. The draw system also makes for some early power ups once we junction the power abilitues from the summons. Throw in a fun and quality card game to the mix and it made for a really interesting set up.

I also loved how equiping a summon eats away at peoples memories, because it’s not often that a power up comes with a price in games.

Yea i get that re 16. I expect ill enioy it (already am for the modt part) but cant see it hitting the heights of my favourites.

I remember with 8 getting the demo with a psx magazine a couple months before the game was released and i played it to death. I dont know how many times i ran away from that big spider thing back to the beach!

Shoutout to my dude Vivi in FF9 as well!

I’m trying out the demo for FF16, and it’s good so far, but not enough to make a purchase just yet. I’ll wait for it to drop to around €45. Still, glad that it’s finally on Xbox!
