CORRECTION: Bethesda Softworks has never announced a native console version for Fallout 76. The update, however, is available for Xbox Series consoles at this time.
ORIGINAL: Today’s 21GB patch for Fallout 76 appears to now have the game running natively on Xbox Series consoles. Alongside reports from other users, our team has been able to confirm that the game no longer has compatibility settings present and instead targets a 4k image and 60 frames per second.
This comes many months after developer Bethesda Softworks said they would release a patch for the game to run natively on current generation consoles. On top of future content coming to Fallout 76, this is certainly a welcome addition.
I could notice as well when doing my dailies today. Thank god it has been done after all this time. Even PS5 users have gotten the upgrade, uncle Phil has forced Bethesda to extend their kindness to the competition lol
Yep, yesterday when one of our team mentioned the update came with more than just the Seasonal content, I had to rush to check. It’s definitely not a locked 60 but it’s a tad better than the FPS Boost implementation, only now we also have all the One X enhancements back as well!
@KakkaKarrotKake I’ll actually have an answer for you shortly. Typically, if there’s an X update, 99% of the time the S also receives it (the original Outer Worlds release being a noted exception).
I meant to edit my earlier message to say how much credit BGS Austin and Double-Eleven deserve for shadow-dropping this upgrade out of nowhere. Xbox is quickly becoming the kings and queens of shadow-drops if this year is any indication.
Okay. The Series S is also now missing the compat options, is listed as Gen9Aware, and is definitely running at higher-than-30 FPS but not quite a consistent 60 (which FPS Boost wasn’t either). Will need more time to confirm but I’m almost positive that the texture work and lighting also received an upgrade (not One X quality-level though).
To answer your first question Mort, Bethesda hasn’t said anything about their shadow drop. As for the frame rate, I think it’s a mixed bag in my experience (and you know how much I’ve played 76) - there are areas where it’s actually worse and others that are more stable but the important caveat here is that it’s very clearly running a much higher resolution, and overall settings/textures that I’m almost 100% certain are higher than the One X build.
Thanks, yeah the game clearly looks nicer at least. But the framerate is all over the place he says, it was very smooth and consistent before. Maybe the FPS Boost got along better with the VRR?
It’s possible, I also wouldn’t be surprised to see further optimization - the original releases saw a bevy of them even after the trouble period was over, so I’d wager we’ll see further improvements from BGS/Double Eleven.
Do you (or anyone) have any recommendations of areas I can check out to compare the differences? I’m thinking of making a video on this update and the shots I captured shows some differences in IQ, likely due to the Series consoles hitting the upper bounds of the dynamic resolution caps, and maybe a slight boost in AO and draw distance on the Series S (which could be a knock on effect from the bump in resolution instead of an actual upgrade), but other than that the lighting and textures so far appear unchanged from the One X and One S versions.
In a way, the results in the video makes sense. While the Series X has double the raw compute performance over the One X, not every aspect of the pipeline has the same jump, like memory bandwidth. What’s odd though is that games using these cross gen APIs have the ability to use dynamic resolutions. With the original One X code using a dynamic resolution, I don’t know why they didn’t keep that feature in place for those times when they are hitting a GPU limitation. Maybe it is enabled and I haven’t run into it yet, but every shot I’ve done a pixel count on, the scene was running at a native 4K. Maybe we’ll see DRS being enabled, or be more aggressive if it is currently enabled, in a future update.
I’ll get some together this weekend, I know my camp is a great place to highlight the deltas (but obviously that does you no good).
Also @Mort, while it’s true there dips in this build, it’s also important that FPS Boost versions of 76 also weren’t a stable 60 (especially not the Series S version, but neither was XSX to a lesser degree).
Apologies for the late reply, Apple made my life miserable this week.
