I have had the original ROG Ally and a Lenovo Legion Go, but I won’t be able to resist getting the new ROG Xbox Ally X because having a natural Xbox home dashboard “console” experience was the biggest thing that bothered me with the other options, and it is going to be awesome as a handheld Xbox Game Pass machine. And my boys have a Steam family group with a bunch of games too where having the combined games catalog view will be perfect too. I love buying new hardware at “holiday” time
Beware that the $499 Ally is a 720p “low settings” machine (at least for more demanding games) and not ideal for a big TV.
Yeah, just watched the Digital Foundry video on it. They were not kind to the $499 version. Hmm, well $800 seems like too much, maybe I’ll pass on it.
After thinking on it for a bit. I’m still going to preorder the $499 version. The nice thing about Videogame hardware is I can always sell it to GameStop in a few years so the loss is never too bad.
The prices seem reasonable to me especially the 500 price which is pretty price comparable to the Switch 2. I mean if a weak hardware like Switch 2 could sell 3.5 million in its first week this could as well be a major competitor to it, now I just want to hear when the other 2 partners are coming in and perhaps LG and Samsung take a swipe at this.
That DF video is a joke. I always gave them the benefit of the doubt in the past, but that one-sided take made me unsubscribe from their channel. I don’t even know if they’re just uninformed (which would be rather pathetic considering their content) or purposely slandering MS/Xbox for some reason. Looking at the comments I’m certainly not the only one who feels that way.
Watch some other videos, if you’re interested in the Ally. Most reviewers have actually been very impressed. Even the traditional Windows haters.
They do seem bitter. I don’t think they were invited for the Rog Xbox Ally unveiling and good on Xbox for that as it was not a final build. Mostly tech influencers were invited. This product as singlehandedly almost melted the internet. We have investors questioning Sony and demanding their direction and everyone has something to say. I won’t be surprised if we see Nintendo saying something stupid next.
I’m sorry that isn’t quite correct. I know for a fact that the Game Gear handheld was subsidised by SEGA Europe more so do with issues of then high Japanese Yen . SONY also confirmed it was selling the PS VITA at a loss on its launch
I get for the PC Handhelds, they aren’t sold at a loss as they need to make money on every unit sold. One was hoping with Xbox on it and its ability to bulk buy products, one would have seen a discount to make people look at this instead of Steam
But like I said this is no doubt for the Die Hard Xbox fan rather than trying to be a Steam Deck beater and we don’t know the official price yet anyway
I’m talking about modern devices, not old ones.
I think subsidized hardware is highly likely to disappear just due to no manufacturing gains, regulators breaking up walled gardens, and the few live service games that make all the money have increasing power to demand smaller platform cuts.
Which is also why we will probably be around the power of the PS4 forever unless AI somehow can find a way to fake frames and pixels even better
Yeah, They love the steam deck so much, when it’s basically the same tech as the base Xbox ally.
Clear Sour grapes
