This and the price will be critical for me. If it’s only $100 and works with the PS4 as well, I’ll probably grab one just because. If it’s $200+, it’ll really depend on what else it’s capable of.
they simply own gaikai and onlive
Yeah… and how does that contradict anything I said? Especially given they’ve owned them for so long and failed to capitalize on the technology IP (which they injected piecemeal into their streaming service mind you).
We have xCloud at home!
I take this as a strong sign Sony is nowhere near having PS5 Game Streaming on their PlayStation Plus Extra/Premium tiers.
It’s common sense imo that you’d sell this kind of device with cloud connectivity of some sort as at least that way you’d have a chance to expand your user base beyond console owners. A remote play device means only hardcore fans who want to play their consoles remotely will buy, and the amount of people interested in this has to be very, very small.
Also, 8 inch screen with a PS5 controller integrated? That’ll retail for minimum 150$ US I think and that would include Sony taking a hit on profits and selling at a loss as there is a minimum of Wi-Fi/processing needed in there to operate and an 8 inch screen can’t be that cheap either. People thinking 100$ are out of their minds, unless they expect it to go down that much when it inevitably fails and stock is on clearance!
This is a fancy, expensive device for the hardcore who buy Sony accessories no matter what and Sony knows they probably won’t sell that much and so will charge accordingly. I’m expecting anywhere near between 150-200$ for what will essentially become a paperweight in a few years.
Curious how minimal battery life will be, seeing as their controllers have a pittance of it, then you’re adding a full screen to it.
Is there anything else that could expand the use case on this? Sony music, Sony movies?
Nah, that would make too much sense, so they wont do it. Just like they should have mixed in those for a PlayStation Plus Ultra tier.
Me too.
All the talk about Microsoft and Cloud monopoly etc when Sony literally had stolen a march on everyone and should have been best placed to corner the market. But of course we know that they pivoted their resources when PS4 took off, but then, in my opinion, regulators should not come to their rescue.
The PS5 supports WiFi 6 and it’s safe to say that this device would as well. Latency is apparently much better in 6 than 5. I’ve read both 75% reduction and “from 5ms in WiFi5 to 1ms in 6”.
So I’m guessing it feels like a full on handheld hardware experience without the pricey hardware. The caveat being that you’re locked to your residence/PS5 location.
Honestly won’t cost a lot either as it’s subsidized. Probably $99-$139. I’ve already broken down this cost for an xCloud device in another thread.
Agree 100%. I knew Sony had acquired Gaikai a decade ago or whenever it was but until recently, didn’t know they also acquired OnLive and yet, they still did fucking nothing!!!
I love how so many companies are bitching about what Microsoft is doing yet, they’re the only company investing money, time and resources into all of what they’re doing.
Agreed again. Sony thinking we’re all living in 2005!!! lmao
This shit is going to bomb and die harder than PSVR 2 will!!! lol
Anecdotally, I haven’t found WiFi6 to make gaming better on my S22 Ultra. Xcloud or remote play.
However, my tolerance for mobile and small screen gamining is miniscule. So I fully admit a likely potential of confirmation bias. (And a large number of pipeline inefficiencies that may contribute.)
It will never not be funny to me how much the hardware power is played up on these console launches, recommending us to buy new TVs with QLED, variable rate refresh etc. and Sony is trying to convince us to play our games on bulky VR headsets and 5.1 inch screens.
Are we talking about the same device from Sony? I expect them to way overprice it like they did with the over $200 Pro Controller with shorter battery life. It shouldn’t cost much in order to be a product that sells, but I see this as a product from an arrogant Sony, so $180-250.
Is there really a need to subsidize something that isn’t going to result in new sales/customers? It’s like subsidizing a memory card.
Yeah, probably over $200, especially if it has an OLED screen.
They don’t need to but I suspect that they want to be aggressive in taking sales away from competition like the Switch.
Maybe there’s a large subset of gamers that play games like Fortnite & Rocket League on handhelds at home and Sony thinks they could dip into that?
Sony is privy to more detailed research on the matter but I do have to question how many gamers play the Switch and Steam Deck at home versus on the road. I imagine a lot of kids playing on the road but there are many adults that own these machines and I’m genuinely curious how many of them play them on the move.
Problem is you need a 400-500$ PS5 on top of a 200$ hand held to replicate Switch, so no way you can do it on the cheap. And with Switch 2 coming out soon enough, this will become an even worse value proposition.
The only devices that make sense are the stuff from Razer and Logitech that also play Android games and if Sony was smart they’d simply develop their app for every device on earth and deploy a cloud service that makes sense instead of getting PS5 high rollers to buy into their device.
If Sony positions this device as a niche accessory to the PS5, I think it would do fine. If this thing is positioned as an actual handheld that is meant to compete with Switch, Steam Deck or even that Logitech cloud device, then it won’t do fine at all.
