Engadget: Some of Ubisoft's PS4 games won't run on PS5 (update: they are bootable, but may exhibit some errors)

In a blog post laying out how cross-play and cross-progression work on Ubisoft Connect, the publisher revealed some Assassin’s Creed titles and other games won’t work on PlayStation 5. The console won’t be able to run Assassin’s Creed Syndicate , Assassin’s Creed Chronicles Trilogy Pack, Assassin’s Creed Chronicles India, Assassin’s Creed Chronicles China, Assassin’s Creed Chronicles Russia, Risk, Star Trek Bridge Crew , Werewolves Within and Space Junkies .

From Ubisoft’s website:

  • on Xbox Series X|S, all our Xbox One games will be backward compatible. On PlayStation®5, all games will be backward compatible except the following ones: Assassin’s Creed Syndicate, Assassin’s Creed Chronicles Trilogy Pack, Assassin’s Creed Chronicles India, Assassin’s Creed Chronicles China, Assassin’s Creed Chronicles Russia, Risk, Star Trek Bridge Crew, Werewolves Within, Space Junkies.

The worst part of this is that it’s going to trigger 0 response from the press.

I doubt we are going to have anyone trying to dig some info and figure it out what the BC solution really is for ps5 and instead we’ll need to wait until Sony feels like it.

You’re most likely, right lol.

I’m looking at the list of potentially problematic titles on the other forum, and I’m not happy at all. I never bought a PS4, and I definitely want to play some of those (exclusive) games, meaning that my PS5 purchase will be pushed even further back, because now I will have to buy a PS4 first.

PS5 BC is disappointing.

You said it. I hope it’s something they can fix for the sake of the people who are deeply embedded and already sold their PS4s.

If Everybody’s Golf doesn’t work well, I’m gonna be pisseddddddd

Does EnGadget have a PS5? Because when Ubisoft first posted this, there’s been a lot of discussion if their list is wrong or if Sony’s is wrong. But if EnGadget has a PS5, they probably wouldn’t print this without testing it.

I imagine they will improve that over time.

A guy on the other forum has scraped information from an API referenced by the new PlayStation Web Store. Everything available in the Store is divided in three categories: NOT COMPATIBLE, BOOTABLE and COMPATIBLE.

The 10 PS4 games Sony said isn’t going to work on the PS5 are correctly classified as “NOT COMPATIBLE”. The games Ubisoft mentioned today are classified as “BOOTABLE”.

According to Sony, a bootable game “may exhibit errors or unexpected behaviour”.

According to the PS Store, the Ubisoft games are bootable on the PS5. But for a company like Ubisoft to straight say their games are not backwards compatible on the PS5, it probably means the errors in said games are probably too much to even say they are compatible.

Really curious to see what comes of this. Could be minor issues that must people wouldn’t even notice, could be that the games boot but aren’t playable or are barely playable. I’m sure we’ll find out soon enough.

Here is what the Assassin’s Creed: Syndicate (a BOOTABLE game) store page says:

Here is what the God of War (a COMPATIBLE game) store page says:

Errr…the thread is premised on the press reporting it, lol. The Verge has a story on it too btw.

Jeff Grubb wrote a brief piece on it too.

Kotaku and IGN reported this aswell.

This is exactly why I linked a press report rather than only linking the Ubisoft page. The Ubisoft page might be open to interpretation. But when the press starts reporting it, it means that even people who might even have the PS5 in hands still have doubts about the console’s backwards compatibility.

Yep. There’s no question the press leans Playstation, but there’s no way they’d ignore a story like Sony blatantly lying about games that work on their system.

I meant actually trying to reach the sources or pressuring the companies for an official statement.

Only a few tech sites, not even dedicated to gaming, just reporting on the ubisoft page is not going to trigger that.

Edit : Didn’t see that Ign and Kotaku also reported it. I guess that’s a start

List of PS4 games that might present errors when running on the PS5 (classified as BOOTABLE instead of COMPATIBLE on the PS Store):

Mafia III, Project Cars, Doom Eternal, Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare, Sleeping Dogs… even some 1st party stuff like LittleBigPlanet 3 and MLB The Show.
