My pre-download just got updated, so I think it’s the day one patch

I’m one of those ā€œconcernedā€ on Twitter about performance on XSX, but also not exactly surprised. This is FROM, and while I love FROM, I also totally know what they are like, technology wise.

I’m more curious to see WHY performance is so poor on this, for pretty much everything. Visually it’s not doing anything that would suggest lower than 4k 60 locked. So no idea there.

I’m also hopeful (though won’t hold my breath) the day one patch fixes these performance issues for XSX / PC and am waiting to see the comparison.

But to be fair, the game runs better on XSS. That should tell you everything you need to know right there. Those making this into a console war hardware thing are morons. It’s clearly a software issue, and with the developer it is, I’m not surprised.

But I’m a huge Souls fan, and just want a great experience. Either way, my copy will be hammered on Friday, regardless.

Any videos showing performance?

My taste in video games sometimes varies wildly from others… I agree with one (1) game in the MC top 20 games (RDR2). The rest I wouldn’t even put over 90, many 20 or so points below where they are. Hah

Souls games are boring af, and I just can’t get into it. I did enjoy SW Jedi Fallen Order, but that was some sort of light-variant which I enjoyed.

Yes, of the pre day one patch. It’s rough. But again, this may all be for nothing if the patch helps. Miles and Jez say the games absolutely fine, except for a few rare points in rain, so who knows right now.

Thanks! Yeah, this looks like poo poo, but let us wait for the day one patch, then we can get in desperation mode

If it’s a software issue you’d think the day one patch would fix this, well I hope. None of the versions have a super consistent framerate but it seems pre-patch so far PS is having the higher framerate. Probably because From just prioritized PS optimization first?

Their previous game was Sekiro and there we had a higher resolution but also a bit more frame drops too. I’m not 100% sure bit didn’t DF in their ER network test say XSX also had a worse resolution? I don’t think it was only framerate. We’ll soon know.

I am just super glad that Elden Ring even has a performance mode for my Series X. While I get that not everyone has VRR currently, that should arguably make the play experience for me smoother than the PS5 anyway and with Quick Resume to boot  I am so excited and have taken work off Friday too.

That’s a bit odd though, because Miles and Jez didn’t have that patch, or did they actually? Would be strange, since it’s day one patch…hmm.

Or both have VRR on their TV.

Miles at least confirmed VRR, and I think Jez has a newer TV that probably has it too. Bottom line is that this is a system level feature for Series X that definitely gives me comfort due to having a VRR TV myself when a developer doesn’t optimize as well as they should for Xbox. But hopefully in addition to that From will further optimize due to it being such a huge game that is gaining major attention at launch.

VRR also fixes the frame pacing issues which are arguably even more of a big deal. Still, VRR is not an excuse for suboptimal optimization.

THIS. It’s like saying sod improving performance, just get a 3080. Not everybody can, or even should, get a better TV. In this case it’s even more baffling as the results are the opposite of where they should land.

I look forward to seeing what the day one patch even does. The network test wasn’t great at all, performance wise, but if its WORSE… That’s actually amazing in a whole other way.

Miles played the network test with I assume the same Series X and VRR TV setup, and he did say on Twitter today that the performance was way better for him than the Network Test which is encouraging.

Yeah VRR is a crazy game changer, I think this started with Kingdom Hearts 3, what a difference that made. Highest resolution they offered and gone were all the crazy micro stutters. So if your TV has it, you’re golden.

This 100%

There are tons of people that don’t have VRR on their TV. The game should just at LEAST be on par with inferior hardware.

So its a bit good then

45 to 50 fps is fine. I played sekiro like that buuuuuut with these new consoles there is no reason for this. I hope the day one patch fixes it because it just goes with that narritive that xbox isnt as powerful as ps5 when the ps5 has a 10 fps advantage. Either way Im gonna have a blast
