Developer Thekla, Inc has announced that ‘Braid, Anniversary Edition’ will be launching on Xbox consoles on the 30th of April, 2024. Based on the original Braid release, Braid, Anniversary Edition features hand-repainted graphics by the original artist David Hellman, animations with extra frames, improved sound mixes and new variants, the ability to switch between the old Braid and new, and 15+ hours of commentary from the developers and other related individuals.

A good idea of the features:

  • Improved sound and new mixes and variants of the soundtrack by Martin Stig Andersen (Control, Inside) and Hans Christian Kock
  • Hand-repainted graphics by original artist David Hellman
  • Animations with extra frames, for smoother in-game motion
  • Ability to switch back and forth between the old and new Braid on the fly
  • 15+ hours of commentary featuring Jonathan Blow, David Hellman, Marc ten Bosch (Miegakure), Brian Moriarty (Trinity, Loom, Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakuel), Casey Muratori (1935; Handmade Hero; Computer, Enhance!), Cris Moore (gamer, resident faculty at the Santa Fe Institute), Frank Cifaldi (Video Game History Foundation), Martin Stig Andersen, Hans Christian Kock, and Jakob Schmid.

The extensive commentary cover the game’s themes, ideas, arts, maths, and the history of independent games that will be of interest to gamers and developers alike. Per Thekla, Inc. founder Jonathan Blow:

“The goal is to make it the craziest, most-in-depth commentary ever put in a video game. You can follow particular threads of commentary spatially, through wormholes that go from level to level to see evolutions of particular concepts; the commentary has lots of markup so we can circle stuff on the screen, point arrows at whatever visual detail we are talking about, show diagrams, play back recordings of gameplay to show what happens if you try doing this or that in a particular level, and many other capabilities.”

Looking forward to playing this again

The original had a speedrunning achievement, which I might go back to grab after playing this remaster (and getting the puzzles down again).

This and Super Meat Boy were the goats of the XBLA era

Braid especially was like the cornerstone of the indie game scene

The internal fight in me for I really wanna play this, as be great to experience it again… but then to give Johnathon blow money goes against things I stand for

Agreed. I’m sure it wasn’t the first indie game I ever played, but it was the first time I was made aware of the general concept that these smaller kinds of games could absolutely be as good and as polished as something bigger. I was blown away that I was playing something that was made by a small, personal team. At least it felt personal.

It did a lot to open my eyes to smaller games and make me reconsider what I thought of as a “proper” videogame.

Depending on what they charge, I’ll likely grab this come release. If for no other reason than to say thanks, and to have a bit of a walk down memory lane.

The original is still in my backlog…

I loved Braid!

Braid was such a great game! The artistry as well with the hand painted assets really made the game its own. Ill replay it again
