Holy shit!

Please be great in terms of performance and visuals on Xbox too and soon me and my bro will get this.

So many good games my wallet and hardrive space simply can’t cope

FYI it’s already playable in New Zealand. Good hunting vault dwellers.

Redditors playing on X say it’s smooth as can be in performance mode and looks great too. They do find the fov too narrow and there doesn’t seem to be a option to change it.

Fidelity mode is a clear difference visually but it’s 30fps with drops.

Sound like there is no 40fps unfortunately.

Let’s go! Can’t wait to dive in and spend another 200 hours in a Borderlands game.

Good review as always, Jesse!

It always annoys me that Xbox codes are so late or non-existent for reviews, especially when there’s shit like this:

Anyways, this looks like the first Borderlands that have piqued my interest since the first one. Not that into shlooters myself so no day one here though. I’ll get to it some day I’m sure.

Yeah, it’s very weird because Tiny Tina, and the previous Borderlands games have this option. So strange when that happens, day one patch adds it maybe? One Redditor did say the fov feels like 1 and 2, I personally never had issues with default fov there. But if this setting was in your previous games, it should be here too.

I see the usual people who hates us are having a go for not reviewing on Xbox, ignoring the realities of the situation (because they do not actually care)

Great review Jesse. Higher than I was expecting you to rate it in which my guess was a 9/10. Everything sounds great. Disappointed that PC release was at 12pm EST and I have to wait until 12am EST tonight to play on Xbox Series X. Oh well. I’m still hyped to play the game as I have the super deluxe edition pre-ordered.

Questions though -

  1. Can the compass at the top of the screen be turned off?
  2. Is the radar optional or set to just enemy encounters?
  3. How long is the prologue?

Thanks Jesse.

Travel to New Zealand and you could have started playing 5 hours ago

It’s pretty good. I really like the small adjustments to the fluidity of combat. I just played a couple hours and it’s really ticking all the right boxes after Borderlands 3 being a bit underwhelming.

It’s running well on Series X with a bit of tearing at the moment on the upper part of the screen, which is distracting, to be honest. It can get a bit fuzzy too (resolution seems a bit low on performance mode, which is the prefered mode to play) and choppy when there’s a lot going on. I didn’t really noticed it with VRR though. HDR is also not working properly at the moment I think.

Also, it may have been said by some reviewers but the game taking around 32GB of space at launch still (which is pretty nice for devs caring about SSD space these days), and it shows, with some of textures of small objects being clearly low res. As a whole, the game is still a looker though and it kind of goes well with the artstyle.

I won’t go as far to say it’s 10 out of 10 for me personnally (because of the few performance issues I mentioned), but I didn’t play too much, only seeing the first open world area, so I can’t judge the rest of the game and I hope to be surprised. The premise is great though and I will definitely pour a lot of hours into it, just like other Borderlands games and even Borderlands 3, which I liked quite a bit, with all its DLC content.

Haha. True but not really into doing that.

HDR not working well? Oh ffs. As in raised black levels?

I think so, HDR is really tame and washed out. Not sure what’s going on and there’s only one HDR setting to tinker with in the options.

Oh man, after Tiny Tina with a pretty decent HDR implementation I was hoping Borderlands 4 would nail this. This shit honestly is just tiresome. You had this working well in previous games, how do you mess this up? Sigh.

OK, so I’m back to the game and I set HDR to max nits (1000), even though it’s not set up properly for my screen capabilities, and it’s much much better. I encourage people to try that, because watching Jesse’s footage of the game and yeah, it’s not doing it any favor. It’s not Jesse’s fault, it’s just the game that don’t have proper HDR settings.

I just watched this

And this looks great, nice colors with proper black levels. I really hope we can get HDR to look (close)to this.

But you are not the only one with this, I saw people on Reddit and Gaf saying HDR is not good and they say they set it up correctly. But it’s good to hear you got it a bit better looking now.

I do not have a color accurate enough display, and no real HDR skills, so I only capture in SDR for YouTube.

Yeah, and even in SDR it looks washed out. But it’s not your capture or anything on your end. There’s no Gamma or brightness settings in the options, at least on console, so it’s a sign there’s something wrong. I’m playing with HDR at max setting and now it feels right. Everything pops like it should be.
