Activision-Blizzard: thoughts on game exclusivity?

They do but I feel there is still some anti-Nintendo sentiment in Japan from game developers. I don’t know if it is past policies from when Nintendo was really ruthless, or if it is something going on with Nintendo still today. I feel like a lot of Japan’s game development is pushing for Sony to succeed but Sony is like “Japan meh… Western cinematic games are where it’s at.”

Maybe by MS locking up more Western games it will force Sony’s user base more towards Japanese games and thus have Sony move in that direction.

It will be the very same as the Bethesda deal. Online persistent games and preexisting deals that they can’t get out of will remain multiplat. So that mean warzone and maybe ow2/d4.

If they just paid 70b to allow COD to stay multiplat then it is actually a really bad deal.

Yeah, it’s amazing people think that MS will allow COD to be multi-platform in 2023.

Sony must be fuming to lose both Crash and Spyro. I really feel like they never gave up on the idea of maybe owning or getting some kind of exclusivity on those games and now here we are with them being owned by Microsoft. I’m a massive Crash Bandicoot fan so at least I’m guaranteed Crash games on Xbox from now on (assuming MS decides to keep making Crash). I could see Microsoft still releasing those games for Nintendo platforms maybe?

So does Playstation now need… Xbox ?

none of those are guaranteed to be multiplat and announcing platforms aren’t commitements lmao

Meaning Diablo 4 and Overwatch 2 will come to other platforms too. But a Diablo 5 in God knows how many years, lol, will be a Game pAss only game. Unless MS doesn’t Honor these deals, but I definitely think they will.

Even though if we compare those games to Deathloop and Ghostwire Tokyo…they can’t even be compared. So maybe they make an exception because Diablo and Overwatch are so huge. But probably not.

I see a lot of people saying COD will stay multiplat. And I agree that it will in some form(Warzone and probably the 2 next COD games(maybe not the second one, depends on when the deal is closed))

But I dont see why would they keep COD being a multiplat when we know for a fact that COD moves consoles like no one else. COD being exclusive not only will make them money with skins, game sales, etc but will make them the dominant console in no time… maybe not this gen, again, depends on how the deal shapes, but next gen? Sony is done in that regard unless they can find a substitute to COD

Same as Bethesda. Live service games that already exist on PS like Warzone will remain there. New titles will be exclusive to Xbox.

As others said Bethesfa laid the ground work for this type of huge purchase and I expect the same. Service games like Warzone will remain multi plat, single games like COD and Diablo will be exclusive going forward except where platforms have already been announced like Diablo 4 etc. All current contracts will be honored. Diablo 5 and COD 2023 or 2024 should be exclusive.

It may take some time for contracts and previous commitments to expire but we WILL see a time in the Series X’s life time where games like COD and the Elder scrolls launch as console exclusives for Xbox and day one on gamepass.

People are not yet prepared for what Xbox will look like once all these Dev/Publisher purchases start pumping out Exclusives, it is going to be insane. We will be getting 1-2 AAA Exclusives a month and even more AA style games a month.

It’s the 10 year plan I spoke about in the thread when the Bethesda news broke.

Microsoft in 8 years time will be the behemoth of gaming.

Microsoft are going for the jugular before Amazon etc, attempted to get a foothold.

Heard Kat Bailey saying the same thing on Podcast Unlocked this morning which confused me. Diablo 4 and Overwatch 2 being announced for PlayStation is not the same thing as the Deathloop/Ghostwire situations where money changed hands in actual exclusivity deals. Microsoft could easily change their mind and make Diablo 4 and Overwatch 2 Xbox/PC only.

I think MS keeps the upcoming games exclusive. We sometimes reference games as “console movers”, but in reality very few games have that power. We’d like to think our favorite first party titles do that, whether it’s Halo, or Forza, or God of War, but it’s hard to really see the driving force of those games without cross platform context. We have that with CoD. We know it’s the biggest FPS in the world. If MS chooses to relegate that to Gamepass supported platforms only, it will both move consoles and draw more players to subscribe to Gamepass.

We’ve already seen that they decided the best course of action with Bethesda, was to keep those games on Gamepass supported platforms, unless there was contractual obligations to supply those games to Sony. Clearly, they believe it’s better to collect a recurring monthly fee with Gamepass and try to draw more subs than just collect their cut of a base game’s price on other platforms.

I can see that too. Deathloop and GT are peanuts compared to Diablo 4 and Overwatch 2 in terms of popularity. Diablo 4 and Overwatch 2 would be huge console and/or Game Pass sellers.

With the extensive delays, they’d be crazy not to.

Yeah, before posting I checked to make sure that both of those games were indeed officially announced for PlayStation.

The funny thing is, in both cases they were actually announced for PS4. The new consoles had not even been revealed yet.

I mean it could go either way. Maybe Diablo 4 does make more sense as a multiplatform game within MS’s long term strategy. The point is it’s up to them to decide now.

General public thoughts on COD exclusivity

I’ll place this here too

Brad Sams has a new video out, covering exclusivity. He shows this quote by Phil from Bloomberg. We’ve seen this one before, right? I’m surprised what Brad says.

“I’ll just say to players out there who are playing Activision Blizzard games on Sony’s platform: It’s not our intent to pull communities away from that platform and we remain committed to that.”

Brad says:

That should not come as any surprise. Keep in mind they are paying nearly 70b dollars , they have to make money to justify that expenditure, they can’t just spend that and then clam it all up inside of Xbox, that’s not going to fly and MS has to make money.

Second of all, MS is in the business of making games, yes they sell consoles and yes they do other things but most importantly they want their gamers playing games and they don’t really care what platform. Yes they want everybody on Xbox, yes they want everybody on Game Pass, but for the time being as MS continues its narrative of trying to become the Netflix of gaming they have to make sure that they are keeping and maintaining a good relationship with gamers and that means not pulling every single title off of PS.

Now there will absolutely be exclusives that are going to bring you know, push people towards the Xbox narrative but I can’t see them taking CoD away because that title brings in at least a billion dollars every fall and that would be a huge hit to the value of the brand every single year. Also keep in mind MS has done a pretty good job of bringing its own games to other platforms, look at Minecraft as a perfect example. We see it all over the place, MS is going to continue that narrative. Keep in mind that the end focus is to get people into Game Pass, not necessarily to buy an Xbox console.

He does expect, obviously that timed exclusive stuff for the game will be theirs or parity.

Part 2 of what Brad Sams says

It’s kind of crazy to say this but MS already has a pilot program in place that kind of shows how to do these mega acquisitions. It’s crazy to say this but MS’s Bethesda acquisition was around seven and half billion dollars which is roughly a tenth of the AB deal, has been a pilot program for MS’s mega acquisitions, they were able to acquire Bethesda, bring the assets in house and launch multiple quad A games.

So when they go acquire AB we can look at what they’ve done with Bethesda as a blueprint if you’re wondering how MS is going to play this deal out. It’s a really important point for them to make sure that they continue to keep a broad approach to the titles because they want to become the Netflix of gaming.

He says more after this, but this was about exclusivity. Video is here

I am only surprised when he is right.

Brad is contradicting himself.

You can’t be the Netflix of gaming and keep putting the content on competing platforms unless it is delivered through your “Netflix” video game service.
