Achievement Hunting |OT| Every point counts

No I don’t think we did…

Sorry, I was waiting to see if anything would get announced at E3. The only new game that’s coming this month is Dungeons and Dragons: Dark Alliance which won’t be till the 22nd. So, I guess that’ll be the default game. I think we’ll have to extend the play deadline to July 11th or 18th (both are Sundays) to compensate for the lack of time to play in June.

Let me know what you guys think.

Star Wars Fallen Order 1000/1000 :achievement:

Another game cleared from the backlog. Finished the story back in 2019 and finally cleared the last collectables and combat achievements. The map can be a real pain in the arse and some of the collectibles are near Impossible without a Guide. Probably still my favourite Star Wars game since I’ve still never played the legendary KOTOR.

I personally would be more interested in a game that was either just added or has been there. Man Eater in particular would be my choice but I’ve heard it’s not the longest game so maybe that wouldn’t work. Just throwing ideas out there though.

Fallen order was a gem, like you’ve mentioned the only gripes I had was how bad it was to back track through the map to get all the collectibles. I loved the core game but the collectibles were a bit much especially given the very linear nature of the different maps. If it wasn’t for that the game would be perfect in my eyes. Amazing story, fun gameplay, lots of worlds to explore, not much else I could have asked for in a star wars game!

Finished up Observation before it left Game Pass. I really liked the plot on this one and the gameplay was fun, but I know I would have been infuriated if I tried to do this without a walkthrough. So many times I’m just supposed to know where to go or that this random number I saw at one point is someone’s password (and that’s just for the plot, collectibles are even worse). I’d still recommend it to people, but definitely use a walkthrough

Seems like a lot of the upcoming gamepass games are releasing mid-month, so you could justify skewing each monthy challenge accordingly. I’m cool with using older games for each month too though. I’m not a big achievement hunter but the monthly even is really fun

Completion #186: Wolfenstein: The New Order

  • Estimated Difficulty: 4/10
  • Estimated Time: Why isn’t the tracker working anymore?

First completion in a long while!

Just like Far Cry 4, I got the Platinum for this game a long time ago when I used to play on the other side. It’s been fun replaying those early-gen games with SSD speeds, Auto HDR and stuff!

I decided to download and try out the demo for a game that’s definitely not D&D Dark Alliance, because I wouldn’t be able to talk about that game due to the NDA. I wanted to try out said demo since it’ll be releasing soon and I thought it might be good to get some impressions before then to see if it would be worth devoting the time to play through the whole game (apologies in advance, I am by no means a writer).

The controls and movement are fairly clunky compared to other third person games I’ve played. Your character is always facing forward, so to attack someone behind you you’ll need to rotate the camera around until you can see them, and even the regular attack can be a bit slow to execute (I played the class that rhymes with smarsmarian, so I’m not sure if this is unique to him or if all of the classes are like this). This clunkiness can also cause to headaches when trying to have any amount of precision when jumping; at the beginning of the second level there are some spikes on the floor that extend and retract and I lost enough health trying to get some treasure that I just restarted the mission rather than giving myself an immediate handicap. None of this should dissuade someone from playing the full game, they’re just things that you may need to get used to (and it’s not like this is the first game to control like this).

The game looks pretty good. Not going to blow anyone away with the graphics but they’re pleasant to look at while also not throwing so much on screen that it’s hard to tell what’s happening in the game (I’m looking at you, Torchlight 3).

You get a decent amount of loot throughout each level (assuming you explore for chests and such), and you even have the option of increasing the rarity of loot that you receive. Every so often after clearing out all of the enemies in an area you are given two options:

  1. Take a short rest at a campfire that appears, which will heal you, replenish your usable items, create a checkpoint, and eliminate your loot bonus, or
  2. Increase your loot bonus, increasing the chance of finding rarer loot from that point forward. I really like this mechanic (especially playing solo) because if I had a rough time getting there I can heal up and create a checkpoint, but if I’m surviving okay and still have a decent amount of usable items I can skip the heal and just get better loot. And let’s be real here, we all want better loot.

One thing to keep in mind as you pick up loot is you can’t actually equip any of it until you complete your current mission. Once you’re back in the hub world you can reveal what the loot you got actually is (at the time of pickup it’s just Rare Helm or Epic Ring) by taking it out of a chest. Initially I hated this but as I played it actually grew on me. No longer would I have to stop exploring to min-max my gear in the middle of the level (or worse, wait for co-op partners to do the same). I could just play through a level knowing that the gear I had was either going to let me finish the board or not and worry about what loot I actually got at a later time.

Another nice little perk I found was if you fall to your death you don’t actually die, you just respawn where you fell off and lose a bit of health.

There are a few cons that I noticed in my short time with the game to offset some of the pros. The merchant in the hub area throws out a quip every 20-25 seconds and every time you sell or upgrade an item, which gets old real quick. Ideally you won’t be spending much time here, but as you’re going through your loot between missions, or while waiting for co-op partners to do the same, you’re going to learn to hate him. The levels finish as soon as you kill the last enemy, which wouldn’t be such a pain except I didn’t know this during my first run, so I missed out on looting some items that were scattered around that final battlefield. A minor annoyance, sure, but annoying nonetheless. You also need to be basically standing directly on top of any loot you want to pick up rather than being able to just be close, to the point where there were multiple times I need to stand on a table to pick up loot that was on it rather than just being able to stand next to it like a normal person.

Overall it’s a game that I don’t think I’d pay $40 to play through solo but I could see myself buying it if I had a friend or three that really wanted to play through the game with me. As it stands the game will be releasing into Game Pass so I don’t have to worry about that cost. Instead I can look forward to playing this day one for “free”, and I recommend you do the same.

Completion #187: Prince of Persia: The Forgotten Sands

  • Estimated Difficulty: 2/10
  • Estimated Time: 8 hours?

Another completion I had previously achieved on PlayStation, all the way back in 2010! I miss those days…

And props to Microsoft, btw. I’m so glad I can still play those games!

Must be a pretty slow week if I got in the top 10. I didn’t even do anything special.

Someone should check if @Plagueborne is ok

Have we agreed on a Game of the Month already or do we skip this for June?

Yeah, the last two weeks were a bit slower after the rush for 10k before.

Between E3, Euro 2020 and such I barely even did achievements this week, so personally that is the reason for me. I’m sure many others also held back a little after the 10k grind and all that.

The only game that applies this month is Dungeons and Dragons: Dark Alliance which comes out tomorrow. So, unless anyone has any strong objections, that will be the official game of the month. Because the game releases so late in the month, we’ll extend the deadline for completions till the 18th of July. That’ll give everyone 4 weeks to grind away.

As for July, we’ll have to play it by ear as The Ascent is the only current game that qualifies and it unfortunately isn’t releasing till the 29th. So, timelines are about to get weird. :grinning_face_with_smiling_eyes:

Just a heads up for anyone looking to play D&D Dark Alliance: it does not support quick resume. Act accordingly.
