Was not expecting this after the critics review on rotten tomatoes.
Can we get numbers in comparison to Mario and Sonic
Critics cannot be trusted on popcorn movies. Do what I do. Average the audience and critic score to get a reasonable idea of where it probably actually lands.
Like right now, critics is 49%, audience is 87. Average is 68.
As a non minecraft fan, I would have said its a solid 6.5-7. (I liked it more than I would have ever expected)
For popcorn flicks, my general advice is to go entirely against the critics opinion.
100%
Like that new Jurassic Park movie that is coming. I have no illusions that it is going to be a “good movie”. As in, its not going to be some meaningful piece of art that changes the way I look at the world.
But its going to be dinosaurs doing dinosaur things. And that is all I expect from it.
How could anyone think Minecraft movie would not do well? It’s the literal definition of a blockbuster movie.
Some movies become so great because they are so cheese. I absolutely loved the movie GeoStorm because of how over the top and cliche it was that it became so damn funny. Unfortunately I don’t think that is what they were going for.
Similarly monster and kaiju movies like Godzilla/Kong are great. But if you want story and character development look for that in the series and not the movies, like Monarch.
I think I own every single 90’s disaster movie there is as well as godzilla movies. Pure magic.
Kids don’t look at critics. They see some funny actors and the title Minecraft with some nice 3D renders and that’s all they need to want to see it.
I think that the trailers looked great so it probably helped too. 3D didn’t look cheap or weird. Movie quality is irrelevant.
I mean it could have been Mario Bros Live Action more so than animated, which is ironic? But yes, I didn’t think it would bomb.
Edit: Oh, I just got it. Silly me.
Some are actually having meltdowns that kids are enjoying a kids movie
Underrated dad joke.
It took me a long time too… wow…
Oh wow that’s much better than I ever thought it would do but I did see a ton of billboards for it in New York, anyway, makes me wonder what other Xbox IP could do well in the big screen, I think Gears could.
I went to see this with my youngest on Friday and it is was really enjoyable.
It’s just stupid fun and with Jack Black being cast that’s all I expected.
People seem to have unrealistic expectations these days.
According to box office mojo, Minecraft has made 720 million+ already.
As has been repeated, people really underestimated just how freaking huge the IP is to kids and adults that grew up playing it.
