I asked for this alot
Not to go off-topic but Drew shouldâve won.
For independent studios and publishers? Sure thatâs true but not a console manufacturer, especially if that one is Microsoft, when they launch their next gen console they will need these high profile exclusives from the get go, not saying that every project should be but Halo absolutely should, especially if they are going with this ânew dawnâ line, what better way to start anew than a new console generation?
Selling consoles isnât the goal, theyâd rather sell the software to a larger audience than sell the software to a smaller audience in order to move hardware.
Good point. Didnât think of this. Itâs the start of a ânew dawnâ but play the next Halo on old dawn hardware. lol
Absolutely correct. Itâs about profitability. Selling products at a loss is not the way.
If it was coming this or next year obviously thatâd be fine but not if itâs aiming a next gen launch which it likely is then just let the studio put their entire focus on making a true next gen Halo game like Infinite shouldâve been, itâs like how Halo Infinite was supposed to be a 10 year project but released on Xbox One, thereâs only so much you can do on old hardware.
Itâs not just to sell consoles that I would want a real next gen Halo game but to take the franchise to another level, just let this one team among the many they have focus on making this game something special, the first true next gen game for the next generation of Xbox, would be so fitting for it to be Halo, and itâs Halo, the franchise still has strong brand power, if itâs great it will move consoles on itâs own and make a profit in the first week or two.
I get that you want the best game possible and without compromise, but that is no longer reality. Games cost enough to create that they need to target a user base large enough to sustain them. If that means the game is (theoretically) compromised, then so be it. You probably wonât know either way.
While not mandatory, I feel like they should do it like how they wanted to do with Series. Perhaps they want to do it if the development flow allows them. In other words, itâs a wishful thinking but it can happen.
Interesting they finally announce it. I remember it being rumoured before. itâs obviously a big decision to leave behind the slipspace engine so it will be interesting to see the next game. Iâm sure The Coalition will be happy to share their knowledge with them.
This makes total sense and is probably the right path forward for the studio. Weâve heard so many times that one of the challenges with Haloâs development is that when they hire contractors to work on the game, they donât already know the engine and it takes time for them to get up to speed. Moving to UE 5 would alleviate that issue and would give them a much larger pool of talent to draw from since UE is the most common engine in use.
The real question we need answers to is âwill the fruit explode?â.
this article is likely going off of the Jason Schreier article that came out on Jan 31st 2023
Unreal Engine prides itself in its scalability. We didnât need more evidence of this but it was driven home with the latest Unreal Fest, where they showed off the ability to see how the game looks on different mobile platforms on the fly.
You can have a fantastic next gen looking Halo on any new Xbox platform and have it play on the Series. It wonât look as impressive but it will be playable in the exact same manner.
Itâs stuff like this that likely made the decision to move to UE5 a whole lot more obvious.
What Iâm excited about is something that I havenât seen anyone talk about yet (maybe Iâm not viewing the right websites or YouTubers) but the implications for Forge⌠It just blows my mind.
They can go about it in so many ways but at the end of the day so much of the work is done for them. They can add a fully feature complete Forge upon release and it could even surpass the wonderfully capable Halo Infinite Forge, with scripting and all.
With all of these rumors about Halo 1 getting another makeover or a reboot or whatever, Iâm hoping itâs Halo 1 remade in Unreal Engine 5. It would be such a great project to wet their feet with because the first thing you want to do is nail that Halo feel and if they can do it with that game they can build on it (exactly how the OG Halo was built on for all of its sequels). Itâs also a smaller scoped game compared to all the new games out there. It doesnât need Forge or all the features that have come since Halo 1. Player expectations are fairly reasonable and they wonât be let down if the game doesnât feature a theater mode, for example.
For those talking about generations, honestly I think it wouldnât matter if a game releases cross-gen - itâs not like in the past when a new generation had some amazing new features the old one didnât.
The Series consoles have SSDs, and RAM / CPU / GPU are areas PC games have scaled for years - and no big jump in specs has really offered anything new (instead, games that have high minimum specs just turn out to be poorly optimised).
Hogwarts Legacy is still one of the most impressive achievements Iâve seen this generation in terms of scope, seamless world and atmosphere - and they managed to get that running on a Switch ffs (not perfectly, but decent enough for casual players that donât have another console).
Cyberpunk meanwhile doesnât do anything particularly amazing yet can still run like a dog on a 4090 in certain areas at 4K with ray tracing on (particularly the Corpo intro) - thatâs existing resolutions and technologies, areas weâre likely to see the most improvement in with a new console.
Thereâs just not much left to do till some major breakthrough like 3D without glasses or whatever - particularly looks and systems wise, itâs why PS5 added triggers and other controller gimmicks (which arenât well supported but can be impressive if used well, like in Deathloop).
Think expectations need to be reined in - new consoles arenât likely to be close to a 4090 (or the top CPU and RAM weâre seeing in the highest end PCs right now / next year) so weâre likely already seeing the kind of games possible on them, just prettier and smoother, which is all new generations really seem to have to offer nowadays until some big new technology happensâŚ
As for Halo, itâs one of my favourite series so Iâm really happy multiple games are in development - and think a Halo 1 remake could introduce new fans to the series, by acting as a starting point.
The original games werenât hugely long so they could flesh the world out more in a remake, then in the next games cover the main events like Reach etc without having to stick closely to remaking 2 and 3, instead putting their own spin and splitting events up (and adding new ones) as they see fitâŚ
(As just like any long running series, I think theyâre so far in now itâs difficult for new fans to pick up - so a soft reset may be ideal)
Multiple Projects just give me some vulnerable odstâs fighting some flood in one of those projects. I would be down with a unreal 5 halo 1 Remake to get them acclimated with making a halo project before they push out something original.
I like the new name myself but a little sad to see the engine being dropped as I loved the way Halo Infinite looked and generally like In-House teams to use their own custom tech.
It is also a shame that 4 years in we seem no closer to a sequel to the brilliant single-player campaign of Halo Infinite
Canât wait for the follow-up myself
iâm very lukewarm on this.
The name change does nothing for me. Its feels not very creative, first project will probably be a remake. Meh.
The Unreal trailer looks good and promising but so did the initial trailer for Infinite.
At least the Flood is back. I really like that. I might be the only one but that did excite me.
UE is true after all, quite interesting!
We know per Digital Foundry (and own experiences now) that UE5 is quite taxing on the current hardware we got for consoles. So hopefully whatever the next Xbox will be will be able to handle it beautifully. Come on, letâs knock it out of the park. If one franchise deserves it, shit, itâs Halo.
