I think there is a point where Epic’s investment in tech isn’t something that independent studios will be able to keep up with, and we’re probably getting there.
It’s not a good thing, but their innovation in engines doesn’t appear to be slowing down even without good competitors.
It was never announced, just heavily rumored. This seems like a smart way to get a good news out of “revealing” it as well as confirming multiple games.
As an Infinite-lover, I just hope it means we get more good Halo. Which, it certainly points to a lot more investment and some long-term planning.
ETA: By multiple projects, I wonder if they have Tatanka and the CE remake and whatever Halo 7 will be.
Officially? Or just rumored? I remember Jez, Nick and others saying that they were going to Unreal Engine 5 but until now, none of it was ever officially confirmed or announced. It was all just rumor and speculation.
Can’t wait to see Halo 7 in a few years running on next generation Xbox hardware and I really hope they eliminate the cross-generation crap. Want to play it on Series X/S? It’s called the Cloud via Game Pass Ultimate.
I generally don’t keep myself up to date with all the gaming news, something like using official UE5 announcement before this one isn’t something I would remember or even search more info on.
I just remember Jez and Nick talking about, but like I said before. Between TC and NT, Halo Studios and anyone they bring in to work with them(permanently or contracted), should have some great support to fall back on for any issues that may come up.
If Microsoft releases their next generation console in Fall 2026, that tells me they’re trying to get away from Xbox Series X/S so staying “connected” to it wouldn’t make any sense. Besides, what’s the point in having all this tech if you can’t maximize it due to being held back by almost a decade old tech? Doesn’t make any sense. Also, they have the cloud which they love hyping up and this would be the better decision. Save money, time and resources from having to develop an Xbox Series X/S ports and gain subscribers to Game Pass Ultimate since it would be required to play the games via the Cloud. Consumers save money by not having to buy the hardware if they don’t want to. It’s literally a win win win.
And when I say all this, I mean from a Microsoft published games perspective. Not third parties.
The no cross gen is probably not going to happen, because it will take way too many console chips to replace what they have now with the next gen hardware. Not to mention people are taking more and more time to upgrade since this Gen began.
Halo 3 Anniversary when, even if it’s just the campaign it’s really weird going from Halo 2 Anniversary with updated graphics and the amazing cutscenes made by Blur to the regular version of Halo 3.
50% of the Xbox MAU are still on last gen, similarly for Playstation. You should expect a longer cross gen period because that’s what it takes for them to recoupe on the investment of these expensive games.
Getting the most of our hardware is something that folks need to get over. It may mean getting the 60fps version with RT when there are lower versions at 30fps and without.
I understand that and with the cloud, they still will be. In my mind, it makes no sense to have the cloud available for the consoles but yet there’s no point or purpose to it. And longer cross-gen lasts, just means less innovation and originality because being tied to old hardware is going to restrict what you can do.
People are taking a longer time to upgrade because the games keep being cross-gen so why would you upgrade? To me, a next generation console should be forcing those to upgrade in order to play the newer games because otherwise, there’s no point in having new hardware. It’s just a waste at that point.
I personally think this is more of a theoretical construct than anything. Developers can be innovative and original with the hardware we have now, they choose not to because it’s risky.
I think part of it will be the rumored handheld console as well, as the likely scenario we’re looking at something similar to the Series S in power with more efficiency gains.
Imo, That alone will extend Microsofts current Gen support longer than they did with Xbox One.
