I’m almost beating the main story and I’m sure it is one of my top 3 yakuza games. I’m amazed
For those starting today, if you like minigames, I recommend you to play the school stories alongside with the main story.
Snake style is insane. One of my favorite combat styles from any Yakuza game.
It’s like they remembered Tanimura and made him better.
Finally started playing. Being playing it non-stop today, it’s so good. I’m confident in saying this is the best combat yet in an RGG game. Snake style is certainly my favorite of the three styles, the music for Snake is also great. Really liking the school stories too.
Oh, and forgot to mention, the school is really detailed. You can tell they put a lot of care and attention into creating an accurate high school. It’s great.
Jist finished the main campaign. It became my favorite game from the Yakuza universe. I can’t find words to describe.
Edit: and, of course, my goty so far.
I’m still on chapter 3 lol! Taking my time with it.
I am inclined to buy Lost Judgment, but haven’t played Judgment or any of the Yakuza games? Do you think my experience will be hampered if I were to dive in right away?
You don’t need to play any of the Yakuza games whatsoever, the story in Lost Judgment is completely self-contained. However be aware that Lost Judgment spoils a plot point in Like a Dragon. As for Judgment, you don’t HAVE to play it, but it certainly helps. Lost Judgment has a separate story but playing the first game gives you a better understanding and a better attachment to all the returning characters. Lost Judgment also spoils and references the first game several times. Not to mention Judgment is a really great game and worth experiencing. So, you don’t need to play Yakuza, but I do recommend playing the first Judgment first. However, if don’t want to, that’s alright too.
Thanks, appreciate the detailed post
The game is self contained and you can have a lot of fun playing it, but you will probably get lost if you haven’t played any yakuza game.
There are lots of references and some enemies from Lost Judgment only exist because of previous events from the universe that can be hard to understand starting by the last installment.
One more thing: if you have game pass, you can save some money and check on Yakuza 0 first. Is the best available way to start and you can check if you will get into the universe. It is one of my favorites of the series as well.
Thanks for your thoughts - I think I prefer the gameplay style of Judgment over Yakuza at the moment.
Judgment is a great entry to ease people into the series. Most of the mechanics are there, some are refined and/or simplified for new comers. It’s still a massive game, but it’s possible to only do the story bits and be fine.
Don’t hesitate to lower the difficulty level in the options, if combats become annoying/repetitive. There’s a point in Judgment where it gets a bit tedious.
But the story, characters, plot is all top tier. I finished it last weekend and I loved it.
One more thing about this: the story of Judgment is about finding a serial killer in a sort of murder mystery thing. It might affect the mystery if you see characters show up in the sequel? Your call of course.
Naturally the conversation has turned to Lost Judgment recently, but if I can say a quick word about Yakuza: Like a Dragon - it’s probably the first Yakuza game I’ll actually finish. Every other one I’ve tried, I’ve really liked the overall aesthetic: the cutscenes, the character designs, the city. But I just do not vibe with brawler combat at all. It turning into a JRPG is not something I expected but is exactly what it needed for me to get sucked in. Well, that, and Ichiban being completely adorable. That opening too … Set the narrative bar high. I was even a little disappointed at the immediate timeskip to a more traditional Yakuza setting because I wanted to play as Masumi escaping his mother (I presume).
Why not start with Judgement?
Maybe I will - Trying to get all the feedback possible
So I have now finished Kiwami 2 on my epic journey to playing all the Yakusa games. I am beginning to realise that people were right that Yakusa 0 is the best one and so far both Kiwami games didn’t quite match up to it.
That being said I had a good time and I have to admit that the meeting that Majima has with a certain character did bring a tear lol and that’s what is so great about these games. They are ridiculous but still straddle the line of making you care about these characters.
A lot of people have told me a story similar to yours. They love the vibe of the Yakuza games but don’t enjoy the combat but Yakuza LAD is what really hooked them. It’s such a great game.
