XboxEra's 2025 Backlog Challenge |OT| Games...So Many Games!

I’ve spent most of the last three weeks replaying Unicorn Overlord - one of my favorite games from last year. I was down with the flu for two solid weeks and that was a nice, cozy game to help me feel better.

However, I am getting close on a couple of other completions. Hopefully I’ll have something to report before too long.

+0 Avowed - loved it, as I have every Obsidian game. Really sad to see it end, but really enjoyed getting to tell a few people where to go and to see others happy

Combat was fluid and excellent, side quests often presented harder choices and far-reaching consequences than expected, main quests kept interesting (for example I impacted the story in the second area without even realising, simply by getting annoyed at some assholes and wiping them out) and the characters (particularly your team) believable and intriguing.

Enjoyed the story and many of the parallels with our world (and its history) - overall a beautiful, enjoyable game that if they release DLC for I’ll be jumping right back in to given I completed all map markers (just couldn’t be bothered with the totems or treasure maps - did the cartographer and bounty ones though).

Can’t recommend it enough!

-1 AC Shadows - been getting started on this as it’s from my favourite Ubi developer (the ones behind Syndicate, Odyssey and Immortals: Fenyx Rising), enjoying it decently enough so far.

-0 Blue Prince - have done a few runs on this, been enjoying it so far although it can be frustrating (I really hate the concept of roguelikes so much!) I’m hoping I’ve taken enough notes and understood enough that I can crack some bigger puzzles soon and feel like I’m making progress…

-0 South of Midnight - going to play this alongside the two above, for a more straightforward chill out game

-0 Atomfall - might not get to this one till later this month but want to give it a bit of a try to see if I like it given it might leave GP at some point…

Also need to finish off Rise of the Golden Idol as I bought it on PC before Christmas so it’d get me back up to 1, also turns out I couldn’t finish the final level of Viewfinder so if I could complete that it’d get me up to a high score (for me) of 2!

Looking at the incoming games on Game Pass and what’s in my wishlist I’m really thinking I’m going to end this year in very low figures or a negative though - the new Life is Strange and Lost Records: Bloom & Rage both are calling to me even though I’ve no time to play them!

Another week and it’s still quiet. This time I blame the Series S! Well, I hope to see some points soon, good luck everyone!

  • 1 - Monster Hunter: Wilds (XSX) - Forgot to take credit for this completion (already took the hit for purchasing it). Overall, this was by far the easiest Monster Hunter story and overall gameplay, some due to some welcome QoL improvements, but mostly down to the fact that the amount of content and difficulty of said content was almost completely absent. Only 30 monsters, with multiples being variants, is the smallest initial roster since the PSP days and I genuinely hope the team have some massive, consistent plans to keep the game alive… they did with World, so I have faith, but I can’t believe how little content there is in the game out of the gate. I’d probably rate it an 8/10 because the systems and QoL are so welcome, but I’ll have to see long-term if the inevitable expansion and title updates are enough to keep me coming back like the old games.

+2: Control + AWE + The Foundation DLCs

Enjoyed the main game more than the DLCs, which kinda dragged on a bit and had some slightly annoying sections which felt like padding.

I should give Control another go, I’m partway through it and stopped.

+1 Assassin’s Creed Shadows. Aside from one achievement I’m having a pain trying to get I’ve done basically everything in the game and had a great time with it. Definitely a great story and great music, gameplay etc. I feel like they’re going to use the light/darkness tech they did here in Hexe as well and I’m absolutely on board with it. This is one of my favorites in the series.

Don’t know when you played it, but they added some assist options with one of the DLCs. I eventually turned on immortality, because dying can set you back quite a ways, which got annoying pretty quickly.

I feel like the default difficulty level is quite high. But you can adjust pretty much everything with the assist mode.

I bought it a few years back and not sure if all the dlc was out at the time, so I’m sure there will be changes. Unfortunately I’ll probably have forgotten everything in the meantime
