My thoughts on the game awards

I should be excited that Ninja Gaiden isn’t completely dead I guess but that’s not the Ninja Gaiden I wanted lol

Turok coming back as a 3rd person coop game is fucking wack I wish the IP could be revived faithfully like Doom and Wolfenstein

Capcom reviving Onimusha is awesome. I’m pretty sure it’s gonna be a souls like tho and I kind of don’t mind that.

Okami getting a sequel is awesome

Super excited Virtua Fighter is coming back, I hope it comes to Xbox I don’t think any platforms were announced and every time the rerelease 5 they skip Xbox

I love Yakuza but I’m happy RGG has a new IP being worked on. They were kind of going overboard with like 2 Yakuza games a year.

Project Robot coming to Xbox I never would have thought that I will definitely check that out

Obsidian with Avowed and OW2 in the same year is going to be crazy Xbox as a whole is going to have a great 2025

I love the Mafia series but man I wish we got the Vegas game that was rumored for years.

If the Elden Ring game is multiplayer only I’m gonna pass on that

Sega and Capcom had the best showing tonight imo

But yeah next year I’ll just read the announcements the next day. The show is way too long I can’t believe I sat through all that just to watch some videos game ads lol

For a TGA that was hyped so much, I’m happy but I think it was definitely overhyped. For sure there was some big stuff though, like TOW2, Onimusha, Elden Ring, Okami, Virtua Fighter (RGG is killing it), Project Century, new Sonic Racing game (fuck yeah!), Witcher 4, but I don’t think there was anything ‘‘killer’’. Was really hoping for something from Double Fine, really hoping we hear from them soon! Would also have been nice to get like an Xbox Handheld teaser, like something really out of left field; maybe next year!

The naughty dog game did nothing for me, although I’m not a fan of them at all except for Crash and Uncharted, but that trailer at first I thought it was from some up and coming studio. That 80s retro wave/space/guardians of the galaxy vibe has been kinda overdone in recent years and it just doesn’t hit the mark for me. Could still be a great game though. That product placement also kept killing any hype for me, was just too much and in your face which I really don’t like.

Overall good show though, happy I watched it live.

Didn’t realize the Virtua Fighter Direct was in 7 minutes lol

My collected thoughts on the show:

  • Witcher IV - looked cool
  • Split Fiction - really interested in it
  • Borderlands 4 - I loved it
  • Outer Worlds 2 - I loved it
  • Screamer - very interested to see more!
  • Dispatch - looks like my jam, another one I want to know more about
  • Intergalactic - Wow. Like wow wow wow. Flipping out over it!

Intergalactic is going to be very cool,

Hot Take: I thought the next ND game would be a bigger leap forward in terms of visuals.

This Game Awards presentation inspired me to check out my “Xbox Year in Review” finally. Maybe I need a new hobby…

Holy shit, friend. That’s a lot of game time

Working from home is a HELL of a drug, brother.

EDIT: I have to imagine a lot of that is idle time, I leave it on overnight more than I actually remember to shut it off. I hope so, anyway. Which still doesn’t excuse the completely insane hour count, but it has to mitigate some of it

Totally get it, and if you add my Vita, 3DS, PS4, and Switch time while tackling the backlog this year, I’m probably right up there with you

You hit that right on the head, I likely have less than 200 hours on the PS5 + Switch this year, and maybe another 100 on emulators on my PC. My buddy got me to dabble in World of Warcraft for the first time in my life about a month ago… I don’t want an hour count on that.

Either which way, it’s all happy gaming! Even if the Keighly’s are the world’s longest commercial, hard not to be excited for the titles coming next year. Maybe I’ll even remember to shut my console down once a week!

Forgetting the game awards were even a thing is the best lol. Waking up to all these random trailers thinking were did all of these come from?

Yeah, just watched the trailer for Intergalactic after reading a description and it definitely looked a bit dull. I’m not a big ND fan though, so maybe that crowd would enjoy it more (I did enjoy the first LoU and the sporadic Uncharted game I play on my PS4).

Watched it on the Xbox Era stream where it’s always a good time with the hosts and chat crew who knows their stuff and love all sorts of genres.

Jesse ran a poll and most rated it an A, followed by B, then C. Many called it the best TGAs so far. I see where they are coming from. In terms of pacing, speeches, live music, and reveals it was all done to near perfection. Few cringe moments (I didn’t mind the self aware inclusion of the Muppets) as well.

But I gave it a C, and I’m thinking I should have given it a D, because it’s lost sight of how to do an actual awards show. It’s not a celebration of the medium and in many respects it’s getting insulting. Combining genres like racing and sports in a category, only to fill it up with nonsensical nominees…that’s insulting. Completely ignoring entire genres, that’s insulting. Having completely disparate titles under the loosely defined “Action/Adventure” category… that’s insulting.

Yes, including all sorts of genres would inflate the watch time, but that could be done in the preshow. The breakneck pace in which most awards were handed out, they could even have niche categories like “Best Puzzle Game” as a category and it would have been done in the preshow, no problem.

So as a “TGA”, something we all understand and accept as a “Winter Games Fest” as BRiT succinctly puts it, I agree that it was great. Having something like this in the winter, with millions of eyes on it is fantastic for gaming and the industry.

I just don’t want Geoff or any of the organizers thinking that this is the route to go as an awards institution.

Doing things over 2 days, like the Oscars, would actually create a situation where they can be taken as a serious awards show and have a big spectacle show on the second day where it’s only the 5 or so main categories that most care about. Where “best platformer” can actually be a category and have the award given out on the first day.

I just think we can expect more and a little open critique could perhaps push Geoff and his crew to consider stuff like this.

All we need is a new Viewtiful Joe. Also I see Kamiya is working with Capcom through his new Studio “Clovers”.

I do think Geoff should separate his show between “E3” and awards. As much as I liked the awards, the rundown seem a bit insulting.

Glad Naughty Dog is doing something new but Intergalactic looked painfully generic to me. Hope I am proven wrong in 3-4 years and it blows my socks off.
