Xbox S/X best selling console in UK in January

To put more context to this note that we now know Switch was actually up YoY by 20% compared to last year https://twitter.com/Chris_Dring/status/1357866698699902979?s=20 . (though tbf it was pretty supply constrained last january)

Also keep in mind last time demand for Xbox One basically ended after the holidays to the point they quickly made changes to the pricing and other factors. So overall, while obviously all devices are supply constrained, this result is pretty promising, shows there’s good demand even after holidays and also probably a not insignificant amount of systems were sold .

So far regarding consoles its really about which company can produce the most. Sony will have slight lead due to there manufacturing starting sooner, but I expect the gap wont increase because sony are suffering from the same semiconductor and component shortage Microsoft are. Its going to be interesting when niether company are supply constraint.

The Xbox Series X is outselling the PlayStation 5 in South Africa, but the latter remains the most in-demand of the next-generation consoles.

While BT Games did not disclose exactly how many more Series X units it had sold, Raru told MyBroadband that it had sold twice as many of Microsoft’s console than Sony’s.

Xbox distributor in South Africa Prima Interactive told MyBroadband that it has had good supply to the trade, with new stock coming in every month since launch.

Here in Sweden it’s still possible to find Xbox Series S but that is not very strange. People here have money and a budget console is not very interesting, especially since PC gaming is huge and people want and are used to powerful hardware. The PS5 and XSX is always sold out and every new batch is fought over hard and sells out in minutes.

A very different situation compared to Xbox One which first of all didn’t launch until 2014, a year after launch proper, and second was seen as a joke up until the launch of Xbox One X. Now things are radically different and Xbox is growing in mindshare, people are talking about it and I see a lot more fans active on forums and social media. It’s glorious!

It is basically Game of Stocks now.

Playstation will sell better with a bigger stock - the power of the brand is too strong. But long term such minor moments might be beneficial for Xbox as a brand. After all more people will give chance to Xbox rather than blindly go after Playstation.

While Sony had a head start on manufacturing etc, it seems like they very much frontloaded their shipments in order to have a big launch day, xbox seems to have spread out their shipments more long term, or at least that’s what’s to be gleaned from a few leaked NPD numbers and seemingly what’s happening in the UK. Obviously we still need more data to fully tell if this is the case though.

Are the NPD numbers going to show PS5 selling less in the USA as well? If that is the case that would be surprising because I thought what is compounding the issue for PS fans is that Sony has apparently priotisied the US market for supply.

What is for certain is that whoever can supply the most will come out on top in terms of sales because supply is really tight and seemingly it will be the case for another couple of months at least.

we will find out january npd numbers on the 12th and with the UK results I genuinely am curious now which platform will have shipped the most units. though NPD will have the matter of it being reported by revenue and PS5 has the highest average sales price of the three platforms, but hopefully unit numbers will leak as they often eventually do.

Console sales in the UK jumped 148% in January compared to the year before.

Charts specialist GfK reveals that over 150,000 games machines were sold during the last month. The Xbox Series machines sold best for the first time, followed by Nintendo Switch. Nintendo Switch sales were up 21% over the same period the year before. PS5 is narrowly behind in third place, though it should be noted that the machine was almost entirely out of stock during the first two weeks of the year.
