Bethesda was absolutely up there as a prestigious studio before the Fallout 76 debacle. I’d argue they still are.
I just frankly think this “Little Brother” syndrome that we have with XGS’s studios just isn’t warranted. Especially when compared to other studios that are 20+ years old.
I simply don’t think this is in any way true. 2 RPGs and an FPS have won at TGA’s. And the British Academy awards all sorts has won. Hades won last year. Fallout 4 won. Destiny won. What remains of Edith Finch won. Golden joysticks, Fortnite won. Dark Souls won half the time. RE2 won.
I think everyone uses certain places on the internet as a proxy ignoring the actual realities of sales, popularity and awards. And just say ‘to be GOTY’ or really loved you have to be X,Y,Z yet ignore the actual reality because they are so focussed on certain limited internet bubbles.
Last I checked, Xbox started the acquisition season… lest we forget that it was the Zenimax purchase that started the run of acquisitions. Furthermore, a couple studios most people have never heard about don’t compare to the majority of Xbox’s thus far (not to mention the value comparisons). That said, there’s an Acquisitions OT right over there….
Just find it exhausting that acquisitions have somehow become as important than GAMES like xbox doesnt have double the teams that the competition right now making them which is all that matters. Anything else comes and goes.
Precisely. When you think about how many games Obsidian’s making, or Playground, or any of the studios that are running multiple projects concurrently (a decent chunk of them), that should be what excites us the most with these conversations.
Yeah, I’ve long since relaxed with Xbox, don’t know what people are so anxious about.
We’ve got a LOT of games announced for Xbox, development takes time, acquisitions won’t make it any faster, rather it would still take time for exclusive games to even come out for Xbox in the far future, for those new acquisitions.
People need to chill, acquisitions are the longest term strategy, people won’t see the effects of a big acquisition made today for at least 2 to 3 years.
They clearly are not in danger anymore, but to achieve their long term goals they need to distrupt public perception of PS invincibility, ie you don’t see rabid journous asking for FF on Xbox while you see monthly (and before were daily or weekly) pieces doubting Game Pass, MS acquisitions, PS ports of Zenimax games, etc…perception is king in entertainment business, Xbox lost a generation ONLY for perception and even before it started. Some people think gaming is not a zero sum game, but PS and Xbox are essentially two faces of the same coin, so they will ever be compared, we like it or not.
It depends on the scale of acquisitions, then “great games”, huh? Between 2018-2020 FH4, Gears 5, Ori 2 and Flight Sim were among the best games made but they weren’t even acknowledged within the GOTY discussion, because of perception again.
