Xbox Game Studios |OT6| But wait, there's MORE....studios

Saw a tweet about Psychonauts 2 that it contains so much content, that it kinda puts some 70 bucks games to shame. I didn’t read any reviews or anything but if that’s true we’re in for a huge treat and especially those that really explore every little corner in some games.

It’s a meaty game from what people are saying ! 15-20 hours for the campaign and side missions

It’s very easy to see why the game was long in the making.

Hey, not to be “that” guy…but Forza Horizon 4 has 24+ million players NOT purchasers. I think we can all guess that a majority of those players were through Game Pass, just like with Sea of Thieves and State of Decay 2. We actually don’t know firm sales data on it, as per usual with Xbox stuff. And yes, I know these games do well on Steam.

But otherwise, yes, it is inarguable that the Forza Horizon series has been huge for Xbox this past generation, and the public hype going into FH5 shows that.

Just wanted to clarify that one point.

That’s assuming a lot of things, not every single Game Pass user is downloading the game to play and would you count that same person if they played on Game Pass then bought it.

according to wiki Forza Horizon 3 sold just under 4M which is a lot

Tim out here dropping some truth bombs.

Which Tim …

That’s part of why Schafer feels Double Fine is a good match for Microsoft today. Even though the Xbox maker dropped the original Psychonauts project in 2004, Schafer says the types of games the company specializes in make more sense under the modern Microsoft’s business model.

“I think the value proposition now is what we can contribute to the Game Pass subscription service,” Schafer says. “I think everything is moving in some form or another to subscriptions. That’s just a relationship with players which I think is really great for Double Fine, where we want to do something new and original and surprising, which means there might be a higher barrier of entry for players who don’t know what this is. And by lowering that barrier financially where it’s not a matter of buying one $70 game over another and it’s more about the time it takes to download them because they’re all up there on Game Pass, I think that’s a huge way for Double Fine games to find their audiences faster.”

Schafer acknowledges that some people have concerns how subscription services erode ownership or how they might build up barriers to entry for developers and turn services into yet another gatekeeper determining which developers get access to an audience, but he sounds convinced subscriptions are taking over.

“I don’t really feel like there’s much of a choice about these things,” Schafer says. “The way things are going is not something I feel like I have control over. You look at what happened with streaming in other media and it’s just unstoppable. Even as a consumer, I went through a move recently and had all these boxes of DVDs and CDs and was like, ‘Why do I own all these things?’ So even as a consumer, I’m part of that move to subscription services. It just fits more of what I want.”

Forza Horizon 4 is the best in it’s genre/market so it will bring people to xbox as for it selling more than PS AAA exclusives than no it didn’t, it surprised bloodborne and maybe death stranding and that it if we are talking in AAA space.

but i do expect FH 5 to beat FH 4 in terms of sales and players count

I hope MS and Xbox still gives this freedom to studios 10 years down the line.

I mean… what other metric is important when you are selling a subscription service? Do you think Netflix judges its success on the number of DVD-boxes their shows sell? It’s a nice bonus, nothing more.

I would much rather wait for gameplay over everything else but I would take an in-engine trailer like Starfield over CGI like State of Decay 3 because at least “in-engine” gives me a far better representation of what the game will actually look like when im playing it.
