classic case of “limited integration” sometimes being a negative, cuz Mojang seems to get away with so many things without enough oversight from MS. As Jez had noted, the cross-play and cross-save stuff was so bad compared to the absolute industry standard the rest of XGS have set in that regard.
Do we even realistically expect Mojang to make any kind of xbox exclusive content? I dont even count them as XGS for all intents and purposes since they are just there.
nah don’t really care about them making exclusive stuff, just expecting them to be held at the same standard as the rest of XGS, that’s all. But I get it, it’s the whole “Minecraft was a Microsoft purchase, not an Xbox one” even though its under XGS, but that is probably due to Matt Booty’s involvement in the game prior. I get it, but it’s still weird.
Haha, they need it though. Minecraft Dungeons being so lacking in things we expect from XGS was really strange. It’s like the 25 people not interested in growing organic bayleaf on the studio roof rebelled and made a game without support.
I know absolutely nothing about Minecraft (never once played the game) & have no opinion about the studio, but I’m enjoying your descriptions of Mojang’s working culture @Mort
When I was talking with Nathan Rose (Senior Project Manager) at X019 I asked him about number of employees at that day and he said it was ~450 people with half for Stockholm and half for Redmond.
Now we know they’re at ~600 people (as of March 2021).
I wouldn’t mind if Minecraft Dungeons and any new spin-off game would be Xbox exclusives. They’re not main Minecraft. That’s different games and Mojang is a first-party studio. In 2014 they committed to keep Minecraft as a multiplatform. Dungeons is a completely different take.
Also, I would release Minecraft Dungeons later than May 2020. Maybe September or even at launch of Xbox Series X|S already with cross-play/cross-save/cross-progression (Xbox PC), Jungle Awakens and Creeping Winter as a base content and all of these other minor updates which came after May 2020 and then they could start with that Season Pass which launched in December. At least review, receptions and scores would be better, because most of the people complained about not so much content at day one.
I think being hands off with Mojang is ultimately a good thing, and made other studios likely to sign up. Also, if they want and require less then the money earned on Minecraft can be invested further into XGS proper.
The only thing I will say is I think they probably should’ve worked on Minecraft Raytracing for Xbox instead of focusing on Minecraft for PS VR. Minecraft is bigger than all platforms, but if you are going to set aside specific time to benefit one, it should be the one your parent company owns tbh.
Not much I can find. They tried AR again with Minecraft Earth but I have seen less on Hololens. May be due to the industry shift for it from direct to consumer to enterprise/military.
A Dutch Xbox site claims in a article about leaks that Klobrille said Wolfenstein 3 will be at E3. Did we miss something or are they just making shit up now? I don’t recall Klobrille talking about Wolfenstein at all.
Klobrille only said that he believes he knows of five new AAA titles being announced at E3 by Microsoft game studios/Global Publishing but didn’t mention any games. My guesses are -
Wolfenstein III
Forza Horizon 5
Project Omen
Project Typhoon
Roundhouse Studios or ZeniMax Online Studios next project
