The whole “they should grow a studio from the ground up” is just more fanboy crap not based in reality. What happens when you start a new AAA studio? The first thing you are going to do is hire a person with a ton of experience to lead the studio, next you will be hiring experienced talent from all over to be part of the team. This basically means you will be hiring away talent from other studios. It’s the same damn thing as just buying an already established team in the end. Now if they do make a new studio? The narrative becomes “Oh MS needs to steal talent from other studios, they don’t know how to grow talent internally” or some BS like that.
When people make these comments about “growing a studio” it shows they think of these things in a fanboy sports competition way. Sony drafted a bunch of rookies, trained them, and won a championship! MS just paid the top free agents and created a super team to win, that’s cheating.
The reality is, the developers working on AAA games likely have a ton of experience and have been in the industry for years. Hire them one by one or hire them as a team it makes no difference. The thought that Sony or MS is an individual that can take untrained kids out of HS, shows them the ropes, and nurture them into talented developers is some weird fantasy.
I know, it’s a little dig at Microsoft because people are upset they can actually do big things.
Yeah it takes years to just build the studio and get the staff working together, then to create something new would take time too and so on. It’s why MS is doing both because they need content now but they will also need some new stuff in the future. Buying Bethesda now gives them content sooner and allows other studios to breath a little. I think with The Initiative after Perfect Dark they’ll probably work on brand new IP, I feel like Perfect Dark is their ok lets settle in here game.
The sad thing about people who say shit like that is Bethesda and Xbox has been really close too, it’s not like they forced the purchase. Bethesda loves Xbox and Xbox loves Bethesda it was such a fitting partnership.
Right, I’d argue the talent at Bethesda studios is valued at the same amount as the actual IP. It’s hard to get studios with good culture and talent let alone trying to do that from scratch. Xbox skipped so many years buying Bethesda, it’s like a cheat code and that’s probably why people are so upset about it.
I wonder if we soon move towards the point where games getting less than 90 are bad…
Considering Doom saga ends soon, I wonder if Id could do a remake of Quake 3 Arena but with all those MS characters - Chief, Doom Slayer, Skyrim guy etc.
Regarding Hades it is the art style - because character designs are superb + Ori was buggy at launch as far as I recall. I think Sony’s domination last gen basically skewed the whole towards existence of so-called “superior” or “elite” games.
I bloody hope not, I’ve liked games in the 60’s more than I have liked some games in the 80-90’s.
I don’t think it was buggy enough to completely remove it from GOTY talks though, well hopefully MS now can allow studios to take their full time. I feel like a lot of issues with games being undercooked is because how little studios MS had, they had to force devs to quickly make games pretty much.
Gladly I’ll never be this type of person, people that need journalists to tell them what to play, don’t really love videogames.
And I’m sure that MS will achieve 90 soon, maybe this year with Halo Infinite, they have the time and capacity to do it now.
I’ve been more curious about Undead Labs lately, they’re ramping up for AAA now, I wonder how much they’ll grow this year, and wish the best for their team.
State of Decay 3 has a lot of potential and room for growth.
I can’t even begin to imagine trying to buy a game in the next month or two with all the GamePass stuff.
I gotta finish Kiwami, Kiwami 2, Y3-6, Like A Dragon, then you drop Octopath Traveler, Outriders, Empire of Sin, FPS Boost Skyrim, Fallout 4, Bethesda titles, along with Dragon Quest still on there…
I doubt it. People who enjoy Automata should buy Replicant and for the sake of Japanese games on xbox day one. Also why is this the xbox studio thread.
I saw it too. I though it was new but after looking at Tango’s website on Webarchive, it seems it was already there on their website late 2020 and just got added to Zenimax website (I guess).
Tango’s website has +20 open positions. Don’t know last time it has been updated.
