I’m a bit surprised they haven’t cross fertilised engines. iDtech seems so good and so versatile you’d have thought that they’d have seriously thought about more first party studios adopting it.
When you look at doom eternal which for me has some of the most impactful Ray tracing on console yet at 60FPS then I honestly think this engine would be awesome for Halo, perfect dark etc (I know it’s too late for PD project now but next initiative thing etc….)
Probably Disney ip and maybe xbox realising they need a few liscence IP games as they sell a ton if they are decent. I think even Gotham knights did fairly well despite reviews.
As @MrEvil37 said other than Id themselves only Machinegames have used that engine consistently. Arkane forked their own VoidEngine from IdTech but they didn’t use it consistently (they used Unreal for Dishonored 1, Redfall, and Cryengine for Prey).
Tango used it for TEW, but since then switched to Unreal for Ghostwire and HiFi Rush.
I think it can be versatile but it might be too much work to have a fork for each studio/game with devs from Id having to help with development each time, Id is not an Epic or Unity to maintain that while making their own games. This could change if MS sees value in supporting that (if Id even want to) and making it used some across XGS and even licence? dunno
Yeah maybe a fair point. It’s not an engine on the market so maybe it is only maintained in a narrow way to support the things ID and Machine games need it to.
I guess that’s probably fair in that neither are an engine development studio.
‘For all its new graphics tech and carpg elements Forza Motorsport doesn’t feel like a huge step forward over past iterations. It’s still a game about racing cars round a track and still requires you to load the track in, select a car and race. The carpg stuff is new but really we hoped the game would do so much more. There is a whole universe out there why is this just about racing cars round tracks?’
