Who We Are

We’re more than a studio, we’re a family of talented developers who are committed to making awesome experiences for our fans. To achieve that, it certainly takes a diverse team, which is why we’re home to everything from artists, engineers, designers, administrators, and inventors – but more than that, these same people are parents, pilots, painters – they’re activists, cyclists and collectors – their personal and domestic passions are as much a part of what makes this studio tick, as any detail on a resume. So those passions are woven into our social tapestry too, in our softball team, in our cook-offs, in our board game marathons, in our hiking and biking adventures – and much, much more.

RARE: A 35-YEAR RECAP

Established in 1985 to focus on the expanding console market, we partnered with Nintendo and quickly sealed a reputation for quality with titles including Battletoads , Donkey Kong Country and GoldenEye .

The acquisition of Rare by Microsoft Game Studios came about in 2002 after a colossally successful run of titles throughout the 1990s. We went on to support the Xbox 360 debut with two of the three launch games, Kameo: Elements of Power and Perfect Dark Zero . Subsequent years saw us innovate with Banjo-Kazooie: Nuts & Bolts , the addictive Viva Piñata franchise and our pioneering work on Xbox 360 Avatars.

In more recent years our investigations into cutting-edge motion control resulted in the multi-million-selling, double BAFTA-winning Kinect Sports series. With development now firmly established for Xbox One and Windows 10, we’re still hard at work here in our custom-built English countryside HQ. Galvanised by the opportunity to celebrate our heritage with the Rare Replay anniversary collection, we followed it up with our most ambitious undertaking to date: creating a world of legendary pirate adventures for players to tackle together in Sea of Thieves. Then came X019 in London and the unveiling of Rare’s very latest world of wonder, Everwild.

With Everwild underway, Sea of Thieves receiving regular post-launch content updates and much more still to come from Rare, here’s to another productive few decades!

MEET MOJANG STUDIOS

We have a new name, a new logo, and a new trailer!

TOOOT! Sound the annoyingly loud birthday alarm, because it’s Minecraft’s 11th birthday! To celebrate, we thought about eating a lot of block-shaped cake, like last year.

Then we figured, why not unveil a new name, a new logo, and the secret sauce that makes the entire machine run instead? While also eating a lot of cake? Much better! Let’s do that.

But why would we need a new name and logo in the first place? Well, why not? Humans like to reinvent themselves from time to time, so it’s only right that we extend the same courtesy to a company that’s been around for over a decade. I mean, would you still wear the outfit that perfectly defined your style in 2009?

Also, so much has happened since then! From our humble beginnings in Stockholm, we are entering the 20’s as a multi-title, multi-location company. Following Minecraft Earth and Minecraft Dungeons, we’re planning a feature film, preparing an epic live show, and playing with ideas for brand new games.

There are also several studios around the world, all part of Mojang . Which, in a stroke of genius, inspired our new name… drumroll and birthday alarm blareMojang Studios .

A small studio in a big industry

Compulsion is 40 people squatting in an old gramophone factory in Saint Henri, Montréal. Founded in 2009, we want to create interesting, fun games that are out of the ordinary. We like to think of ourselves as craftsmen, who create games that we love and are proud of. We make games because we’re excited about them, and about the concepts and ideas they contain (like shadow shifting, or a talking mask).

We make games about real people in sometimes ridiculous worlds, and want to tell stories that aren’t just “I am a prince, look! a monster, I must hit it with a stick (a big one) so it dies”.

Zenimax Media is known for its World-famous Bethesda brand. Among them, Tango Game Works, the only studio based in Japan, is a studio that focuses on creating games from the creator’s point of view. I don’t want to be a game development studio that sells well but loses sight of its worth and fun. Japanese game development that can be proud of the world. Love for the game can be the best in the world. We aim to be such a development studio.

About

Alpha Dog is a boutique game studio creating top-tier 3D games for mobile, PC, and consoles. Our first game “Wraithborne” received international critical acclaim in fall 2012 for its console quality graphics and gameplay. Our second game, MonstroCity: Rampage (Action-Strategy), was released in spring 2017 and has been consistently featured in the app stores by Apple and Google worldwide.

We believe there is not one end-all, be-all solution. Each game is unique and requires handcrafted experiences that fit the audience. However, none of this can happen if you don’t first “find the fun” and give the player genuine value for their time no matter what.

We develop games we believe in as a team and set the bar high with a heavy focus on social experience. Harnessing the power of Unity and Unreal Engine 4, our goal is to build an iconic brand through evolutionary design and pushing the limit of mobile games.

About

Founded in 1990 by brothers Brian and Steve Raffel, Raven Software has gone from a five-person company with a dream of creating a role-playing game for the Amiga, to the developer of numerous award-winning games and best-selling titles, including Hexen, Star Wars Jedi Knight II: Jedi Outcast, Marvel: Ultimate Alliance, and most recently being a major contributor to the Call of Duty® franchise.

At Raven, we’ve built our company on expectations. An expectation to always design the games that define industry standards for graphics and playability. An expectation that award-winning games are the norm. But more than anything, a clear understanding of our market’s expectations: that being, for us to consistently produce the games that people want to play. In other words, exactly everything we’ve been doing since 1990.

About

To say that our studio had modest beginnings would be putting it mildly. At the far end of Mail St-Roch, a handful of developers set out on what would be the greatest adventure of their lives . They took risks, faced huge obstacles, and carved out a space for themselves within the Activision family.

Our vision? To succeed together . Here everyone brings their own unique touch to projects that showcase their talent on a global stage. The best in the field come together to create games that leave their mark in an industry known for fierce competition. Because before we can perform well on our own, we have to move forward together .

A team, yes, but not just any team. Working at Beenox, we feel as if we’re part of a group of like-minded people who are great to work with . You could say that video games are in our blood. It feels like a family, a tremendously talented family that, through the strength of the team, moves mountains and wins prestigious awards.

About

The best quality on multiplayer TPS is no longer a console exclusive. This was the challenge that Digital Legends took on and adopted as their philosophy. Throughout the years, the studio has been keeping quality and innovation as their main pillars. As a result, they are now an international reference in mobile TPS action games and one of the most sought-after studios to test state-of-the-art technology.

Digital Legends Entertainment has worked many years for big Industry players such as Electronic Arts, Disney and Adidas either developing flagship titles or their key IP’s. One of the many things that makes this studio unique is their proprietary game engine, Karisma, which is one of the most powerful in the market. Karisma, makes outstanding graphics possible on mobile devices which players thought were only possible on consoles, creating an immersive and unparalleled experience for action game lovers. These high-quality standards gained the attention from many technology partners such as Sony, Samsung, Google and Apple, which invited them to announce Kroll, Digital Legends’ 3D fantasy adventure hack’n’slash game, in the same Apple Keynote in which the App Store was presented.

The pivotal moment for the company arrived when they chose to focus on their own IPs and became a studio specialized in high quality multiplayer TPS games developed from the ground up for mobile devices. The Respawnables™ marked the beginning of this new era for the company. With over 56 million downloads, this third-person cartoon-style action game is now a consolidated IP. The Respawnables™ triggers the imagination and fandom of the lively community, who love creating fan theories and rich background stories about the game universe. Afterpulse™ has been launched for iOS and Android, a hardcore tactical TPS with cutting-edge, realistic graphics and an innovative monetization system, which is particularly successful in the Asian market. Afterpulse™ has won multiple awards and it has been featured in the App Store Editor’s Choice in most countries becoming a great example of how realistic TPS are not exclusive to consoles and computers. Other important elements to their games’ successes are the community engagement and fluent conversation that allows the studio to understand players’ motivations and challenge them with weekly content releases.

Developing mobile TPS action games is extremely challenging as you must surpass critical areas such as graphics, real-time multiplayer-pvp, free to play monetization, and smooth touch control systems on the top of having fun gameplay. Digital Legends Entertainment has thrived in this demanding adventure thanks to a strong, international and multidisciplinary team with many years of experience in different areas of the videogame industry. This fusion of industry veterans, emerging talents and passion for their work is the key to their success.

Their game pass “worries” sound like it was pulled straight off twitter, they’re litearlly told by Matt it’s not all about game pass and its an additive service and one of them even repeats it then they go on to about how streaming services killed DVD sales and how that was bad as if game pass is going to kill physical media/buying games??

Not only that then go on about how they’re worried that games won’t have big staying power and when a big game goes into game pass it will just be lost inside game pass with all the other games…???

Why are do people feel the need to always question game pass like this, I don’t understand. It’s like to people there has to be something bad about it or we need to worry about it because it’s a good thing?

It has become very apparent to me today that the games media is just very clueless about Xbox in general and are always going to sound kind of dumb when talking about the platform.

Matt confirms Crystal Dynamics are an equal partner in the development of Perfect Dark, not just some outsourcing job.

Yeah doesn’t help when they all haven’t really played Grounded or State of Decay and one of them doesn’t even know what State of Decay is

“We accept cable demise because of subscription, but in gaming? Blasphemy!”

Where did you hear that?

Edit: Nevermind. I got it. That’s amazing for a small team game.

I think it might just be a case of them trying to weigh in the positives of something and possible negatives of it. I’ve always said, Game Pass is amazing,it is not gonna be this thing that ruins gaming but it will also not be good for all games. I’m sure there will be cases where GP is not gonna be a proper release model, but it’s not like $60/70 is also a proper model for every game, and overall I believe Game Pass will have a much more positive outcome than not. But everything no matter how awesome it is will also have some downsides to it, it’s just gonna be disingenuous to focus on them and forget everything else that’s good about it.

I think people have a hard time to accept something so good because it is really so good for them. Game Pass barely if not have no downside to it. I mean you can argue the expiration, but that’s subscription 101. The thing is, Xbox can afford to do those risks because of Microsoft. Once they got involved completely, the name of the game (yes I said it) changed a lot.

People have hard time accepting anything that is not coming from Sony. 100% if Twitter existed in early 2000s, we would have people crying how online will kill single player games.

This always happen when their tribe doesn’t have something good on their side or when the opposing force does something beneficial. Sadly, this isn’t exclusive to gaming.

I understand all this but a game not working for the service is somehow a negative for the service? just don’t launch the game on the service simple as that haha. I agree not every game will fit the game pass mold but I don’t think that’s a negative to the service at all, it’s just how it is.

The real and honest negatives I think are around indies and the have and have nots, being if you aren’t in game pass it might be hard for your game to be noticed. But we still don’t know if this is fully true or not, I still think even with game pass that if you make a good game, indie, AA, AAA people will buy/rent or do whatever they need to play it.

There are so many games that come out of no where before and after game pass so I don’t know how true this can be.

Yeah it can also being the whole doubt of something being too good to be true, there HAS to be a catch. Like how people keep saying (included in the podcast) that we can still buy games FOR NOW as if Microsoft has some incentive to stop selling games?? if anything selling games makes more money than game pass lol, that would be a bad thing.

A sale = guranteed revenue, I know this doesn’t happen a lot but someone could easily sign up for 1 month play the game and cancel and they’ll only make $10

That will fuel a lot of PSBots I’m sure.

Very much so. A lot of them don’t understand basic things, or doesn’t care. Not sure which is worse tbh.

It’s an unholy mix of incompetence, cultists and ignorance.

The saddest part is, they don’t realize that you can still buy the game. Game Pass isn’t a paywall that says, “Want to play Starfield? Get Game Pass. Otherwise, get lost!” It’s an option, a great option, but still an option.

Their argument on that was that a big budget project could launch but would be forgotten about quickly because the subscription model would dilute it or something. For this argument, they used The Gray Man on Netflix, which yeah wasn’t a big cultural hit, but it did well enough for Netflix that they wanted more of it and are making it an extended universe lol, so in that example I think they missed the mark and are attached too much to the zeitgeist/pop culture definition of success.
