After two hands-on hours with Minecraft Legends, it’s clear that Microsoft and Mojang have another successful formula on their hands.

Minecraft Legends is the fourth Minecraft spinoff game (Telltale’s Minecraft: Story Mode and Mojang’s Minecraft Earth and Minecraft Dungeons preceding it) and after getting an hour with its campaign and about an hour with its PvP multiplayer, it’s already building to be my favorite of the bunch.

Found an interesting job post at MS Careers.

Research Intern - Speaking the World into Existence in Berkeley, California, United States | Research, Applied, & Data Sciences at Microsoft

The Speaking the world into existence research effort aims to apply the recent progress in large language models to prompt-based creation of interactive 3d scenes. Integrating Large Language Models with a game engine should enable not only faster development of 3d content, especially for Virtual Reality applications, but also allow for spontaneous user-generated content in the course of a VR experience, which has been imagined as a core element of VR from its inception.

A while ago Semafor reported that MS is currently experimenting this kind of tech to build Minecraft worlds by telling the game what to do, so this looks like a part of that project.

What Microsoft’s new AI demo for Minecraft means for gaming | Semafor

Also, apparently OpenAI made ChatGPT watch 70000+ hours of Minecraft videos to train the model. No wonder why Bing AI wanted to get rid of humanity after going through all that.

anyone have an updated list of what every studio is working on?

I’m so ready for Perfect Dark. Any chance we see it this year? I’m just expecting the game to be almost a glorified call of duty campaign with loads of optional stealth routes. Kind of like those old Activision James Bond titles. I’m also expecting Tomb Raider quality cutscenes except with better written characters and overarching story that makes more sense.

Not a Minecraft guy but would love to see something like this for forge

AI is going to change so much about games in the next 5 to 10 years

Isn’t he glad it’s not coming in first half of this year? Lol.

Oh wait, is he trying to say he’s playing one?

Yep, design director. He’s the one that mentioned the movies that inspired Starfield recently.

Whoops. Imagine any of us during launch week. We’ll all need rehab.

I think we could see it, I wouldn’t expect a big 10 minute gameplay trailer but if it’s out next year I think we’ll see something. There’s only so much they can show us, everything has mostly been announced so unless they have tons of unannounced or not leaked games, I’d expect to see some games that have already been announced plus some new one, shocking revelation I know.

I don’t think they’ll do the 12 month thing either.

This hurts, I always thought he should’ve had his own studio at Xbox.

Maybe something he was never interested in, he was working in publishing for a long time now and probably only came back to Halo because of being desperately needed

We’ll see, his work in the original Halos was great and he did an excellent job with Halo 3 ODST, I get the feeling that he will start his own studio but we’ll see.

End of an era. I wish him the best.

What’s there to say?

Joseph Staten came back to Xbox back in 2014 to assist with Microsoft’s first party efforts and basically worked on Recore and Crackdown 3, finally assisting on Halo when 343 Industries was in rough shape during the development of Halo Infinite.

He seemed like he never wanted to work on Halo and there possibly wasn’t really much room for him to do much at Xbox first party as a writer for second party….

He’s basically a legend from the 6 and 7th gen of developers. Like David Jaffe, Cliffy B or Tomonobu Itagaki, one person gets more of the attention than the team and basically they’re more hyped up than they should be.

Microsoft has different IPs and new wonderful talent joining the company all the time. We wish Joseph Staten the best, but at the same time I’m not going to be that disappointed he’s gone, if it were Todd Howard that would be another story.

I love Halo but clearly there’s something wrong within Microsoft that keeps talent from staying. I wouldn’t cal this a warning sign, it’s just more of the same kind of thing happening. People come and go.

Edit: I wouldn’t be surprised if he is getting a job somewhere else for significantly better wages, seems like the game industry has had a lot of people moving around due to that.
