Xbox CFO Talks Bethesda Exclusivity; “We Want Bethesda Content to be First or Better or Best on Xbox Platforms”

Yes, that’s the name I remembered from the interview. But it seems you quoted the wrong person.

Ah I see, it’s no biggie. But I meant Tim Stuart. The one that gave the interview.

There’s just mixed messaging in what Tim said and it’s not really helping them.

Why would they put these games on Playstation? Long term is way better to associate big franchises like TES and Fallout to the Xbox brand than get a few millions $…i simply dont understand

OH, interesting, I missed that completely. Thanks! I’ll delete my post. And agree on the mixed messages

Edit: Thanks, to you and Supercommodore - I’m clearly not awake yet…

“We look forward to collaborating with the talented teams at Bethesda and bringing them into the Xbox family, but have no further comments at this time until the acquisition is finalized.”

Microsoft needs a clear vision, either they go full 3rd party like Sega or a closed ecosystem like Sony and Nintendo. Playing on both sides doesn’t work.

It’s probably a antitrust issue. Like what Phil said it’s illegal to say this and this will be exclusive to our ecosystem now.

But Tim could have just said “no comment” it’s a bit misleading in my opinion but I guess it’s on purpose then.

Not fanboying at all. They’re trying to be as forthcoming as possible, considering they’re probably being asked about it incessantly.

Read what he and Phil have said carefully. New games aren’t coming to Sony or Nintendo and if they do, it’ll be a long time. When Phil says “They don’t need to release on Sony or Nintendo for the deal to work out for them,” how much clearer do they need to be?

Again, if Bethesda games are really important to someone, they need an Xbox or capable PC. Full stop.

In the context I think he meant first on Xbox, better on Xbox for announced games that are not released yet.

He does not seem overly specific, just highlighting that they will have an immediate action of making their games better and first on Xbox and in the future they will revise that.

But it’s working for them, their profits and usage reports are increasing at insane rates.

But it’s clear that they will only bring their full breadth on platforms where they can have their full ecosystem. And since neither Sony or Nintendo will allow that (because it would destroy their closed ecosystem) it’s safe to say it won’t reach those platforms.

I like Jez for his scoops and xbox coverage of news but not so much for some of his takes. Just yesterday saying halo is not a system seller anymore and we know that is false.

I think the disconnect with a lot of people is they are still locked into the idea to make or get exclusive content so (people have to buy your console to play it → more console sales → more exclusives because higher userbase → more console sales → repeat) as if it is the only way to succeed. What MS has learned IMO comes from acquiring Minecraft and that is that the games can transcend the platform. Exclusive games will never reach the heights of a game that is available everywhere and MS wants more games like that.

The game forums are so used to “console wars” that they aren’t seeing the bigger picture. They are thinking “Hey lets buy the Star Wars franchise and make it exclusive to the console and everyone who loves Star Wars will have to buy the console. Sales will be through the roof! Take that competition!” They are missing the idea of buying Star Wars and owning freaking Star Wars. (You can replace Star Wars with FIFA, GTA, Fortnite, etc…)

You can also think something like: Keep Elder Scrolls on everything, reach more people, and next have Elder Scrolls TV shows, movies, toys, etc…

Dont think comparing Minecraft to Bethesda is the correct stance.

I’m of a similar mindset, but it’s still an interpretation based on vague and varying answers. Let’s not pretend that anything is set in stone.

So why they are still making consoles? Why they don’t put Halo and Forza on Playstation?

Yeah, he has brought us some great scoops and I always digged his enthusiasm. And right after the Bethesda news appeared he wrote tweets kinda making fun of journalist’s articles that believed firmly that all the games would stay multiplatform. And now he turns around completely. Saying it’s probably due to Google and Amazon that the deal was made. And that he now seems to believe MS doesn’t care for exclusives.

If that were the case all the newly added studios would still make multiplatform games. By this logic any other new big studios they snag will stay mp too, nah.

I see what you’re talking about here. But pretty much everything Phil has said in interviews since the Bethesda news makes it seem they will go with this approach. Their ecosystem which covers console, PC, phones and tablets, XCloud TV stick. So potential PS5 players they will get via one of those many ways. The players truly missing out will be those that only have PS5 and don’t want to buy a XCloud stick or play via the other ways.

It’s now only with the words from Tim that people are starting to doubt things, but Tim is probably being extra careful with his words. I guess he’d rather say “first, better, best on Xbox” to keep things open than say “expect future titles to be only in our ecosystem” but that would be illegal like Phil said as well. Personally I still think the best way would be for these questions to just repeat what Phil said or “no comment” because once again we have articles that give their own interpretation of it and undoubtedly the usual suspects when it comes to YouTubers too.

Then why did the CFO say this? He bassicaly defined timed exclusivity or some improvements

Because xbox has a communication problem.

Putting barriers, locking content is business. It is what differentiate each platform from another. So I don’t know why we discuss this again. If they don’t put a lock on Zenimax/Bethesda content, it’s a big mistake.

I think it’s REALLY time for the gaming community to play games on these new consoles instead of parsing every word from every interview.

If you are an Xbox gamer the Zenimax deal is ALL good news, if you are not an Xbox gamer you are at the whims or whatever MS decides long term which will not be known for months or years down the road.

My guess is he is saying this to make a company like FEC think they won’t have any monopoly position over the competition. Still it obviously would be better to just not comment on things like these at all. I can’t think of anything else because it goes fully against what Phil has been talking about.

Absolutely a big mistake. Spending billions of dollars on a company only to have them keep making multiplatform games, only to have them be the best on Xbox and maybe timed? Truly unbelievable if that were to happen.

It would make zero sense. Any possible PS5 players they can reach via several ways, they don’t even have to buy the console if they hate it that much. Around the time TES 6 comes out bet on it that XCloud sticks on TV are a thing and work great. So that way PS5 players become subbed to GP too.

Whereas if they release it all on PS5 too, someone with only PS5 goes for a month of GP on PC, if they like the game they buy it on PS5. Or they don’t try anything out, they just buy it outright for it. And then MS missed an opportunity to have more GP subs.
