So even after the ABK acquisition closes Xbox will still have less gaming IP’s than PlayStation.
Who has one of the largest catalogue of gaming IP’s, fills many gaps in Xbox’s first party lineup/mobile and is currently quite affordable? - SEGA. It has to be.
With PS growing more arrogant by the day I also want to see Xbox take on Sony head to head with those big cinematic third person action adventure games, there’s not many of these studios left so I want Xbox to pick them up ASAP:
Crystal Dynamics
Eidos Montréal
Asobo
Remedy
IOI
Crytek
Various WB studios
If Xbox can take on PS in that area then PS really will get the kick up the butt they need to become more consumer friendly. PlayStation’s USP will be gone and they will be heavily reliant on their new GaaS strategy. I can see their customers flocking if this were to happen.
I’m kind of doubtful on Crystal Dynamics. Amazon seems to be all in on Tomb Raider ( Funding a Game, Movie and TV show) so I don’t think they will be up for grabs unfortunately.
It’s funny how people kept saying he was all talk but he’s done pretty much everything he said he wanted to do, better hardware, a leading first party, better Japan support etc
He’s already said they ain’t done and are looking for studios where they aren’t as strong, buying is Asia isn’t an if, it’s when
Possibly but the forum drama and takes would be so juicy
I think they’ll go for stuff that’ll hurt Sony more after all the bs they pulled. Buy Square, keep the close relationship with SEGA and do the same for some other publishers.
They are working on that. Phil was asked if we can expect Japanese content on Xbox beyond simply just versions of games that are already on PS and Switch and he said yes, there is already stuff in development that he of course can’t currently talk about.
I think CC2 is working on an Xbox game with XGP. Kamiya leaving Platinum could also have a connection to Xbox. But from my point of view, the big piece is SEGA. Xbox needs a publisher to establish itself in Asia. There aren’t a lot of big Japanese studios that have an IP that could make a difference. I think it could be interesting to build a base with SEGA and integrate a few Japanese independent studios. I also think Square Enix is one to watch. This is a key time to acquire them and Xbox is obviously aware of this. It’s now or never. In any case, it is likely that Japan will be the next destination for Xbox acquisitions. We’ll see if they buy a few partner studios before that, but I can expect the acquisition of SEGA or Square announced in the first quarter of 2024.
