I’d be shocked if that was the case. Sense like people ask over the place have been raving about gamepass and it’s almost always trending on twitter.
Need… updated… numbers
Yeah agreed. My thought was they want to report a huge jump so they’ll report post holiday numbers.
I seriously doubt MS will get another publisher.
If they don’t reach 30m by the end of the year, then it means that the growth staggered. Because with XCloud launch, with Forza and Halo other Game Pass Day 1 games and all other games there if they can’t reach those numbers then they are in trouble.
Worth noting, Microsoft has more subscribers than Netflix and doesn’t always give out a figure.
They will .
Why not? Bethesda can get only so much bigger and Xbox game studios is a lot for one person to handle
Completely forgot about Eiyuden Chronicles. Hope it turns out great.
Those acquisitions will be significantly less than IO, CD, and Avalanche. Regardless, it was a different time back then, Xbox needed more studios and had the checkbook open, they obviously aren’t in a position now where they desperately need in house content.
Microsoft were, iirc, the original publishers of Psychonauts. For one reason or another, they pulled out last minute. It hurt Double Fine quite a bit from I’ve read, but they recovered and went to create other titles.
Compulsion - that’s just a case of Xbox execs identifying talent they believe in. Phil has spoken highly of Guillaume Provost and the vision he brings. We Happy Few made an impression (MS had marketing on it). MS took a chance.
I think it’s going to work out great for both of these studios.
I don’t expect the figure to be that big. As far as games go we haven’t had the big hitters. Once halo is out the subscribers will increase dramatically monthly and won’t let up.
AoE4 will be big for pc subs too
Sure, i’m just saying Microsoft isn’t inclined to give out a number constantly, good or bad.
Hoeg and Colin did a really good segment and Sacred Symbols plus about acquisitions and talked a lot of about the possibility of adding another publisher. Hoeg argued that the big players like xbox acquiring more and more companies is actually good and heathly for the industry and made some really good points about why citing things like encouraging more people getting into game dev since there will be more money in it now and long term security of devs like double fine. He did talk about how a purchase of a publisher like take 2 would bring serious review from the govt but that as of now monopoly issues shouldn’t be a problem. He is a financial lawyer so he knows a little bit more than most about things like that.
Add White Owls Studio and Grounding Inc. and Xbox could achieve some really weird AND big japanese games that appeal to west and Japan.
Grounding Inc. Could make the Phantom Dust reboot and Panzer Dragoon spiritual successor we deserve and White Owl Studio could do… The things they do
I would love to see JP Games, Grounding Inc., White Owls and CC2. CC2 and JP Games for AAA and Grounding Inc / White Owls for experimental stuff.
I’d love to listen if you have a link
Pretty sure XboxEra has an article and video about it with analysis done by OneBadMutha
Two companies without major financial backing, IO has backing from Warner Bros and it is an AAA company, Avalanche is owned by Nordisk. Plus, Double Fine was born with Psychonauts 1 which was an Xbox temporary console exclusive (was initially a full exclusive until MS dropped out at the end), they did some Xbox 360 and One exclusives and made calls with InXile and Obsidian too see if it was worth it. Compulsion was a new studio that its second game was crowdfunded just like Psychonauts 2.
I don’t think it’s an issue of if but when…
The whole strategy with a subscription service like GamePass is content content content.
They will want to ensure they get the best content on the most frequent basis. The quickest and easiest way to do that is to buy big (especially to guarantee they get first dibs on the content).
If Xbox start to own the bulk of the established IP and talent it will make it extremely difficult for another organisation to establish a competing subscription service.
