That’s a short term benefit, as the staff at any developer are not fixed. They aren’t an asset MS would acquire.
All the top talent could leave within a few years, then what have MS actually bought? What are they left with?
No engine. No IP. Nothing, really.
Only reason I could imagine the deal is if WB said it was both them and Netherealm together or neither, then MS might take them to get the Mortal Kombat IP.
I’m not saying they all would leave at once, I’m talking about value. In ten years time the staff at a studio could have completely turned over, so even if they were super talented, it’s not a long term asset MS would be buying.
TT does not have their own engine. They haven’t worked on any original IP for as long as I can remember. There are no actual assets there.
That’s all I’m saying. It’s not an attractive buy. Yeah they would get a competent studio in the immediate term, but long term there is nothing there.
The assumption there is that all the top talent could leave AND that Microsoft couldn’t acquire talent to replace it. Acquiring talent to form an entire studio versus replacing talent as it leaves are two very different things and Microsoft is certainly capable of replacing talent.
The benefit to acquiring TT Games is its a huge E rated development studio with a desirable culture and good management and project planning structure already in place. That means they likely have good processes in place and when you have that it’s easy to bring people in too.
You could make that argument for other studios ms bought though. They didn’t bring much to the table either. They pay a premium to buy an established structure and talent. I get your point though. And I’m sure the price is not as steep too.
I think Insomniac is a rare circumstance. Most studios that get acquired don’t have most of their IPs tied to publisher acquiring them. Sony pretty much lucked out and got them on deep discount due to their valuable IPs all being tied to them. I think only a godfather type of offer would’ve made Insomniac get acquired from another studio, and no offense to Insomniac they wouldn’t be worth much to other studios since most of their IPs outside of Sony flopped commercially
They got the Insomniac engine. They also didn’t pay very much.
Like I said, there is a right price for everything, and there would be a price it was right to get TT, just for the current set up.
The point I was making was that I don’t get why people talk like it would be an amazing acquisition or that MS should be keen to do it. It doesn’t come with much.
If Xbox is acquiring a stake in Kojima Productions I’m going to lose it LMAO! This totally lines up with Kojima’s weird send off message to PlayStation fans and the level of ambition tied to this rumored cloud based partnership with Xbox.
They are a studio with a long proven track record that fills a void that Phil Spencer himself has talked openly and often about. Why wouldn’t it make sense from MS’s point of view? They need studios to make content, TT makes content. Plus they could leverage the relationship TT has with Lego to possibly continue making Lego games. Even if they were still multiplatform, just having the Lego games day and date into Gamepass would be huge for Xbox.
Obviously the price would matter, but that wasn’t what was originally being discussed.
