Missing out on a hell of a lot of games that thousands of devs poured their hearts into
His choice, let it be.
It isnât an issue at all. If itâs good, word would have spread, doesnât matter how old the IP is. The argument " no one under X age has heard of the IP" can literally be applied to every single brand new IP without a prior release.
But letâs pretend it was an issue. Whose fault is it for having greenlit the game and let it be worked on for 7 years if being an old IP was going to be an issue?
Assuming if itâs overâŚ
It depends how you see it. Was this project expected to take 7 years, or was MS expecting to be releasing it in 2024 maybe? The landscape from 7 years ago to the date this might have released is much different, maybe different enough that when push came to shove, they thought it was smarter to cancel it.
Iâm guessing the fact they shut it down, it was probably more than a year out, which a this point is completely understandable to shut it down if they had to really cut something.
This is also something I wonder about everwild and the new mmo. Like, how many years away were those games from releasing?
Yea idk I loved Xbox since the og had the 360, the one, one x and series x. Have had gamepass since the day it became a thing. Iâll probably ride out the generation but it feels like the writing is on the wall with XboxâŚ
I probably would of dipped out already but every time i think of doing it I think about rebuilding my library on ps and it annoys the shit out of me.
I see Greg Mayles and Louise OâConnor are gone from Rare. Absolutely crazy thatâs og Rare. I wonder if they quit or were fired none of the articles say
All these layoffs and none from the âHardware Teamâ like some were expecting. I guess we can take that as an endorsement that there will be Xbox hardware next gen.
People losing their jobs and studio closures suck and that is why Iâm okay with the multiplat approach. If that is what it takes to save games and jobs Iâll take it.
It is ironic when you think about it.
Sorry is there a summary? Reading through the thread, it seems like The Initiative shut down and Turn 10 halved? Still not sure what is happening with Rare, hard to get the news from other toxic discourse.
It was a reply to Schreier but this person posted that they were fired from Halo Studios. Which likely gies with the engadget reporting.
All reports say they left, as I believe is the studio head at Zenimax Online.
I could see some leaving as accepting their failure on not being able to actually have anything decent to show after all this time, but without any confirmation from the horseâs mouth, itâs really hard to know.
Could also be a way to show their discontent, but considering current market trends and how difficult it seems to be in the industry right now, they really cannot be taking those decisions lightly.
I mean, other than Sea of Thieves which has been very successful, the last game released that wasnât a compilation (rare replay) was what? Kinect Sports?
Maybe it will go through a reconstruction. Worst case will be SoT studio.
good luck on that, sony did price hiked the games on psn in Brazil, I wouldnât be surprised they will do it on your region too
The YouTuber I followed shared his thoughts on the matter and good thing he came across as reasonable. Xbox is the focus, but this is more upsetting news as a gamer as a whole than simply Xbox fans. The truth is the industry as a whole has problems and their upper management wonât help on it. It may be good to have them for resources benefits, but like any loan investment, they want them back with extra.
Yeah, thatâs where I was headed with that. While itâs sad to see long time vets leave, maybe change is necessary to get the ball rolling again over there.
The industry expanded massively, costs increased massively⌠and then the industry started to contract. Itâs that straight-forward.
Thereâs been a lot of numbers-fudging and biased data interpretation going on to obfuscate this fact (like counting mobile players as part of the same market when theyâre not). The material point is the market for home entertainment computer games played on a high end TV with cutting edge graphics on console is contracting. Nerds like myself are a dying breed. Young people these days have too much other stuff going on and they didnât develop the same cultural habits as I did.
This is 2025, i.e. thereâs a point where people need to realize that all those lower Xbox sales, PS5 sales that have plateaued (and software isnât shifting massively on PlayStation either), higher game prices, apathy towards major studios (Ubisoft anyone?) and mega flops again again and again (Forza Motorsport flopped hard but itâs not just Xbox titles either, i.e. Dragon Age Veilguard was a monumental flop and Bioware is on life support) will have consequences. Namely people lose their jobs.
I donât know what else to say really when I see all the meltdowns going on, i.e. numbers donât lie. When you have a project in development hell like Perfect Dark without an IP thatâs got mass appeal (it just doesnât) then itâs going to end badly - either by getting canned (which it did) or flopping hard upon release. Which was very likely considering the genre. I mean I could sit here and lament Deus Ex Mankind Divided flopping hard nearly 10 years ago but it did and that killed the franchise.
Most games cost too much to make, have too little appeal and donât sell enough. That is all. Not everyone can Nintendo themselves out of it either. And it remains to be seen how long theyâll be able to keep that up themselves as well.
very sad to see them both leave.
Personally i would like Xbox to do less big budget experiments and be faster and leaner in their execution on new studios and projects. There is no good reason a rather standard game like Perfect Dark needed this much time and effort. And when you fail (and you will, its a creative industry after all) fail much faster.
They should honestly go back to their old franchises instead of being stubborn and absolutely needing to do new stuff.
Theyâve failed miserably with Everwild even though it did look awesome Iâll give them that.
Now maybe itâs time for a Kameo sequel! Or maybe a sequel to Conker which I think could prove successful if done right, or maybe even the long awaited Banjo-Kazooie sequel. That thing would make a killing on Switch 2 and probably put Rare back on the map again! Even Kameo would do great there considering it started as a GameCube title so itâd be full circle. And Conker having roots on N64 could be released alongside Conkerâs Bad Fur Day on Virtual Console on Switch.
Gotta play it safe to get in Satyaâs good graces and live to fight another day! Also maybe a quick and dirty Sea of Thieves port on Switch 2 for that extra income!
