Where does Xbox need to improve? | Let's be constructive about it

Guys at OtherERA found new hirings for GXI (Global Expansion Incubator) for Africa and South Korea, and new managers for Japan and China.

I remember the guys here mentioning that Jez said on Xbox Two Podcast the reason why Xbox Gamepass on PC sucks is because there’s a conflict with Windows team who’s responsible for it, and IIRC there was a marketing staff change that would now answer directly to Microsoft Gaming, I think that MG will do everything standalone rather than having to rely on other divisions as they likely had no time to dedicate for Xbox or if the other divisions were conflicting with it.

Good good. Guess they will use Netflix model of expansion.

I personally believe that they should just update Battle Net and use instead of Xbox Game Pass store.

I mean, I have read many timea here they would start marketing things when the pipeline is there, I disagree based on past facts, but we’ll see for sure.

For how long we’ll have to read that MS is internally sabotaging Xbox? They almost buried it last gen and even now marketing and pc operation, two significant parts of Xbox, are being crippled by Windows, lol

That’s corporate politics for you.

It’s scummy, but it does exist, I think the Windows division is jealous because Microsoft rather than killing Xbox due to the ressurgence of PC Gaming back in '11 decided to give in the division pleas for more independence and investment, and right now they are sitting on the priority chair. As if the Windows division has a grudge since OG Xbox because the founding fathers convinced Gates that the Playstation was taking over gaming and could make a lesser reason to people to keep buying Windows and hardware.

I mean, most people from 20 years ago are not even there anymore, also Windows is under Panos Panay since a couple of years, I expected swifter changes honestly. Imagine Sony not pushing PS with all its might and seeing the other divisions crippling it from behind the scenes. On top of billion dollars spendings on acquisitions to make it even less understandable. :man_facepalming:

Speaking about marketing differences, I’m just waiting for AC Milan Serie A match and there was a HFW customized tv spot in conjuction with the football match. Imagine seeing Halo like the old times. :smiling_face_with_tear:

SIE is semi independent and other companies (and Sony is a conglomerate) do not play well with SIE either (though recently they started to work together) - like Sony Music publishing multiplatform games separately, Sony’s TV does not support vRR and so on.

I mean, if they cling to the “one show per year” with all these studios it kind of have to be like this.

I’d say these are minuscole issues compared the entire marketing or pc operations. Most people can’t even use VRR anyway and mobile games don’t need the PS branding (like they don’t need Xbox branding honestly).

That strategy its not tenable in the long-term. In the short-term, they can slow down future announcements: Perfect Dark, Everwild, State of Decay 3, Fable and unannounced games not getting gameplay until the year of their release. They also have Quakecon and Blizzcon. Could reveal iD and Blizzard games there. Both studios are well-known enough to avoid needing the E3 spotlight.

But, yeah, eventually they will need to do something else.

That’s true but SIE is an independent entity that only now MS Gaming is becoming. Except Microsoft has bigger potential - with access to Azure and Microsoft’s money.

  1. Better quality control on third party games, Crossfire X should not have ever made it onto Game Pass. I understand that Xbox lets self publishing on the platform but Game Pass is very curated and MS should never have marketed Crossfire X. What’s crazy…how did we end up with Crossfire…but Amazon ended up with Lost Ark which as far as I can tell is owned by Smilegate. It also doesn’t help that Playstation ended up getting Sifu which should of been on Xbox and on Game Pass

  2. Achievements need overhauling

  3. Basically getting into the cadence of dropping a first party game ever other month. Even if COD/OW2/Diablo4 stay multiplatform, having Bethesda, 95% of Acti-Blizz and Xbox Game studios dropping exclusives should guarantee at least one every other month or at bare minimum 6 per year, obviously more is better. Considering that many of the Xbox owned studios have multiple teams also, constantly hiring more talent, buying more studios and also Xbox Global Publishing, it should realistically be like 7-10 first party games per year

  4. Finally need to work on Japanese support, I understand Final Fantasy skipping Xbox this gen but at this point we should of gotten Persona and other Japanese games like Guilty Gear on Xbox

They need to become international. Acquire studios in Europe.

Contract, invest, and fund games in Japan as well, maybe get Platinum.

A lot of the fans do set themselves up for disappointment.

OK I have a lot to say here.

  1. Clear messaging. They need to not beat around the bush with stuff. Are things exclusive or not.
  2. Achievments need to be fixed. Separate main game and dlc, Make it so we can see hidden achievements as an option. Add some type of platinum like completion mark. ( This is my most requested. )
  3. Fix the DVR and share feature. Honestly just make it like the ps5. It works well.
  4. Locilize stuff. Its crazy a company as big as xbox can’t locilize something for all the places its in.
  5. More soulsbourne games/ exclusive soulsbourne games 6.more japanese support
  6. improve the controller. Add features like haptics etc
  7. a new u.i just a clean simple one
  8. Market the games better. They just suck at marketing. We all know this.
  9. more third person narrative games.
  10. Have multiple shows a year. E3 is pretty much dead. Have a a show every quarter. You have 1st quarter 2nd quarter is e3 3rd quarter can be whenever and 4 th can be a show plus game awards. Just communicate more.

Just to plan for E3 alone takes them a long time. Its not realistic to expect that many shows. Verticle slices, trailers, its all a cost.

sony and nintendo do it. Sony has one state of play a quarter at least. nintendo is pretty regular with directs again. plus summer showcases/e3 plus vga

Xbox has been continuously improving and I feel like they’re listening to the community very well, so before I go into any of the thing I’d like them to do better or differently, please continue to listen to the community. This builds so much confidence and loyalty in the brand, it’s amazing. Love it, keep up that work team at Xbox :green_heart:

With that being said, here’s my two cents on what Xbox needs to improve.

1 - First Party Games. At the end of the day everything is going to come down to games with me. For me this means ensuring the games we love and that Xbox owns come out on a regular enough basis.

After acquiring Bethesda/Zenimax that means they need to figure out a way to deliver Elder Scrolls and Fallout games on a regular enough basis. That means supporting those studios with more staff, building more teams to work on multiple games, building a dedicated studio for one of those IP or potentially letting other internal studios develop one of those titles.

For XGS and Activision it means using their dormant IP. Activision also needs help freeing up their studios to work on those beloved IP.

2 - Eastern Content Support and Localization. Every first party game needs to have Japanese and Korean localization. Period. Growing a user base in Japan and South Korea is important and if Xbox’s first party doesn’t support that area, why would developers and gamers feel that Xbox is all in on supporting that region.

Investment in the area in terms of studios needs to happen too. Acquiring a several developers in Japan and South Korea is important for the region but also the content produced has popularity in the west, show both fanbases support.

Doing these should lead to increased confidence in what Xbox is committed to in the region and ultimately lead to less games skipping Xbox. Until then, pony up some money and pay to get the support or help them market it, whatever brings the games to Xbox.

3 - Marketing. Currently I see more marketing for the Halo TV show by Paramount than I ever have for Xbox in the past 5 years. That’s a problem. A big one.

Xbox isn’t in first place and they’ve got a subscription based service model. They need to be pervasive in all aspects of marketing, all over social media, sponsoring sporting events and soccer teams, buying up billboards and tons of TV ads, wrapping busses and trains in ads. They need WAY WAY more advertising. This should be one of Xbox’s largest expenditures.

Let’s hope that Phil will work seriously with Capcom to prevent Playstation exclusivity. They really need to buy a lot in Japan now.

This one is tough, because they just cannot make commitments or promises before they own the publisher. But they have to say something for media and regulators. It was the same with Bethesda where they were dancing around, talking about not removing the content from Playstation, first or best, some games will be exclusive and only at Roundable things became much clearer.

There is Microsoft and there is Xbox. So they cannot favor Xbox much when they do the talks at Microsoft’s level, because Microsoft Gaming is much bigger than just Xbox (that’s why there is some theories that Microsoft sacrifices Xbox in favor of their bigger gaming initiative - which I don’t believe of course)
