I get that Halo and Forza (as great as we all know they are) don’t have the recognition outside of Xbox and United States… but Bethesda games are universally popular. Gamers are going to notice these titles are missing from PlayStation.
By the time TES will arrive, XCloud will be more popular so it won’t lead to suddenly surpassing Playstation in hardware sales anyway. Playstation is a console to go if you think about consoles in Europe.
I hope so . Cuz if they dont then xbox can kiss their goals goodbye .
Well, MS made a lot of bets this gen. Let’s see how they are gonna play out.
The games that would have that impact is Fallout 5 and The Elders Scrolls VI. I don’t see them anywhere soon…
Since Xbox is on Steam it’s just another publisher to many people, PC is strong af here.
Indeed. Xbox will likely sell more PCs than Xbox in Europe lol
The notion “console = Playstation” is too strong there. Nintendo is entirely different thing there though.
yup. Grubb said MS is going to market the fuck out of Starfield . So at the very least MS recognizes where they need to hit .
True, they had a lot of marketing for AoE in USA I recall, but not that much outside USA though? Hope with Bethesda will market more outside USA.
Anywhere, regarding the bets out of head there are two
- services (XCloud, Game Pass) over hardware
- owned IP (purchased, homegrown) over licensed
What else?
Also, people still buy PlayStation due to the bombastic exclusives. Games like Spiderman, God of War, Ghost of Tsushima, The Last of Us, Horizon Zero Dawn and the coming games like Horizon FW, Ragnarök, Wolverine etc. cements the idea that a PS purchase is worthwile. These games dominates the discussion and mindshare.
Well Ghost of Tsushima appeared out of nowhere, but it was Ubisoft style game in Japan with high quality production. It was bound to sell a lot. Horizon was also Ubisoft style game. Ubisoft games sell a lot of Europe.
Indeed. The main thing is that is oozes quality, that is PS strongest selling point. They even made a Ubisoft game look like a PS-game
That and the fact that they have Marvel is a killer combo.
First party usually has a high quality. It is just Microsoft pulled the plug on quality last gen due to small budget.
Marvel IPs is a killer because they are huge. Spider Man is constantly in top selling charts for a reason.
You mean ‘some’? The perception that PlayStation sells because of the exclusives Is simply ignorant and shortsighted. Not even half the people buy it for exclusives. It’s simply the default console in most of the world. The choice for console isn’t based on exclusives for the general public, it’s based on what’s the new numbered Playstation, that’s the case for most of the world outside US, UK, Canada and a bunch of exceptions here and there.
I also believe that exclusive games contribute to around 10-20% of purchases. But system sellers exist that’s for sure.
It’s a combination of the two. PlayStation is working hard to be, and stay, the default console via marketing. But games like Spiderman sells a shitload of consoles on that game alone, as did God of War. It also plays into the “default console” bit, you know this is where you get the big budget blockbuster games whether you buy them all or not.
You don’t get to be the “default console” without those games.
They did. With PS & PS2. And PS3 outside the US, UK, some in Europe.
Well, on PS2 they did not have competition and most of the games were exclusive to Playstation due to that. Though the main contribution is Playstation 2 being the cheapest DVD player.
I don’t know what you are referencing, the first generations are different for other reasons. The PS3-era it was not the default console though, there was hard fought battles with the Xbox 360 where I’d argue the 360 won when it mattered.
Then Xbox decided to do drugs and the Xbox One was born, leaving the field wide open for PS to charge in and take over.
IMO, in Europe PS3 still won (aside UK).
I live in Europe, outside the UK. PS3 caught up at the end of the generation, but in mindshare it was never even close to a “default console”. The 360 held strong.
